Tottenham condemns racist abuse of Mathys Tel after UEFA Super Cup
The 20-year-old Tel, who is Black, was one of two Tottenham players who failed to convert their penalties as they lost the shootout 4-3 to PSG after a 2-2 draw.
'We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night's UEFA Super Cup defeat," Tottenham said in a statement.
'Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards — hiding behind anonymous user names and profiles to spout their abhorrent views."
Tottenham said the club will work with the authorities and social media platforms to take 'the strongest possible action against any individual we are able to identify.'
'We stand with you, Mathys,' Spurs added.
Tel, who joined the team on a permanent basis from Bayern Munich in the offseason after a loan spell last season, went on as a substitute in the 79th minute when Tottenham was 2-0 ahead.
He hit his shootout penalty wide.

West Virginia sends hundreds of National Guard members to Washington at Trump team's request
WASHINGTON (AP) — Hundreds of West Virginia National Guard members will deploy across the nation's capital as part of the Trump administration's effort to overhaul policing in the District of Columbia through a federal crackdown on crime and homelessness. Gov. Patrick Morrisey, announced Saturday that he was sending a contingent of 300 to 400 to nearby Washington at the Republican administration's request. They will arrive in the district along with equipment and specialized training services, his office said in a statement. 'West Virginia is proud to stand with President Trump in his effort to restore pride and beauty to our nation's capital,' Morrisey said. 'The men and women of our National Guard represent the best of our state, and this mission reflects our shared commitment to a strong and secure America.' The move comes as federal agents and National Guard troops have begun to appear across the heavily Democratic city after Trump's executive order Monday federalizing local police forces and activating about 800 D.C. National Guard troops. Maj. Gen. James Seward, West Virginia's adjutant general, said in a statement that members of the state's National Guard 'stand ready to support our partners in the National Capital Region' and that the Guard's 'unique capabilities and preparedness make it an invaluable partner in this important undertaking.' Federal agents have appeared in some of the city's most highly trafficked neighborhoods, garnering praise, pushback and alarm from local residents and leaders across the country. City leaders, who are obliged to cooperate with the president's order under the federal laws that direct the district's local governance, have sought to work with the administration though have bristled at the scope of the president's takeover. On Friday the administration reversed course on an order that aimed to place the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration as an 'emergency police commissioner' after the district's top lawyer sued to contest. After a court hearing, Trump's attorney general, Pam Bond, issued a memo that directed the Metropolitan Police Department to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement regardless of any city law. District officials say they are evaluating how to best comply. In his order Monday, Trump declared an emergency due to the 'city government's failure to maintain public order.' He said that impeded the 'federal government's ability to operate efficiently to address the nation's broader interests without fear of our workers being subjected to rampant violence.' In a letter to city residents, Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, wrote that 'our limited self-government has never faced the type of test we are facing right now." She added that if Washingtonians stick together, 'we will show the entire nation what it looks like to fight for American democracy -– even when we don't have full access to it.'

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — It's not an ice-cream cone. It's not an Italian rainbow cookie. It's the baseball bat being used at the Little League World Series. Easton's 2026 Hype Fire USA Bat with the neon green grip and the pink-and-neon yellow barrel is hard to miss at the plate. And the players love them. 'I left it up to them which bats they wanted to use, most of them went with the bat they gave us,' Pennsylvania manager Michael Shaw said. 'You know, a great color for 12-year-old kids — sour gummy worms.' When Little League teams arrive in Williamsport, they get bright and colorful uniforms and hats at the Grove, the barracks where they live during the tournament. When they go to the batting cages for the first time, the rest of their gear is waiting for them. Bats, gloves, helmets, catching gear, you name it, the players are getting it. 'They were kids in a candy store, and as a coach, I got goose bumps walking in there and I'm 38 years old, so I can only imagine what the 12-year-olds are thinking about while walking through that door, seeing all the gear they got,' said South Dakota's manager, Ryan Vavruska. 'We're very fortunate to get here and to be blessed with all that gear.' Easton has partnered with Little League for more than 40 years and in 2023 the partnership was extended through 2028. Rawlings merged with Easton in 2021 and is the official glove used in the tournament. 'When they opened the roller door down to the batting cages, the stampede started,' Australia manager Keith Land said. 'These kids are going to be excited to go home and go, 'Look what I've got and look what you haven't got.' They'll rub it in, don't worry about that.' After aluminum bats were turning games into home run derbies, Little League in 2018 changed its bat rules to comply with the USABat Standard, which switched the material used to make the bats, so they now perform more like wooden bats. These bats, however, are lighter and easier to swing for 12-year-old players. The standard was created to ensure the 'long-term integrity of the game,' according to USA Baseball. There are now fewer home runs each year at the LLWS, even if the ball sounds good off the bat. But the players aren't talking about the home runs they may or not hit — they just love having the bat in their hands. Most of them couldn't believe what they were getting. 'It was pretty hype,' South Dakota's Camden Tycz said. 'When we saw the bat table it was just astonishing.' Preston Ware's mouth dropped when his team from South Carolina got to the batting cages. He initially thought his whole team would get only one bat to share. 'Coach Dave (Bogan) tried to trick me and said, 'Yes,'' Preston said. But quick to jump in was Joe Giulietti, who hit a grand slam in South Carolina's first game. 'Preston,' he said, 'this isn't like the 1960s. Thomas Frank toasted the perfect start to life at Tottenham in the Premier League after a 3-0 win over Burnley, but joked Richarlison already had their goal of the season. Frank's managerial debut for Spurs on Wednesday almost ended with silverware, but Paris St Germain fought back from two down late on to clinch Super Cup success on penalties. Former Brentford head coach Frank had warned newly-promoted Burnley would pose a stern test and yet a double by Richarlison secured a first league win since April 6. Richarlison steered home the opener after 10 minutes before his second goal on the hour mark was a superb volley from a Mohammed Kudus cross and Brennan Johnson added another – six minutes later – on a tough top-flight return for Burnley boss Scott Parker at his old club. 'Perfect start or dream start,' Frank reflected. 'We all know we need to follow up on it. Today I will just enjoy it and I hope the players, the club and the fans enjoy it because that is important. 'I think overall it was a good performance, not through the roof. A good performance against a difficult opponent. 'It's never easy in the Premier League – we know that – and after the very short turnaround against PSG. 'Big positive; our medical department and performance department did a top job to make sure the players were ready to go. I think we had eight starters again so that I am happy with.' Richarlison impressed in a 2-2 draw with PSG before Spurs lost on penalties and retained his place with £65million forward Dominic Solanke only recently fit again after an ankle issue. After a largely injury-affected three years at Tottenham, Brazil international Richarlison may have left this summer if a suitable offer was tabled but remains part of the squad and Frank is excited to get more consistency out of the 28-year-old. He added: 'Fantastic he is scoring. The first one is definitely easier to score without being easy, but I have a striker that takes those two chances and helps us win the game. 'He deserves a lot of praise. He was very good against PSG and today he was exceptional, with his work-rate, driving the team, link-up play, hold-up play, just dominating and then the two finishes. 'So happy on his behalf and again, performance department, medical department did a top job to build him. 'Second goal 17 passes in the team I have been told, every player touched the ball and finished with two top actions. 'First from Mohammed Kudus and then second, an exceptional finish by Richarlison. I'm a little disappointed that so early we have goal of the season – but must be a contender.' Spurs boss Frank revealed Yves Bissouma, who was dropped for the Super Cup for repeatedly being late for training, missed this fixture due to injury. Burnley had created a number of first-half chances, but were punished for a lack of clinical edge in both boxes. 'It's really fine margins of the Premier League and that's probably the main thing to come out of it today,' Parker admitted. 'The clinicalness of the Premier League, they produce an outstanding, world-class finish to see the game away from us, but I saw some real positives. 'We're disappointed because we came here to try to get a result, but overall there were some really pleasing things.'
