Book Review: ‘The Tiny Things Are Heavier' is a reflection on young adulthood and migration
Okonkwo's debut novel is at turns amusing and heartbreaking as it follows Sommy, a Nigerian graduate student trying to navigate her new life in Iowa. Lonesome and homesick, Sommy tries to fit in as she studies for her master's degree, eventually befriending several other women in their 20s and engaging in a complicated sexual relationship with her gregarious Nigerian roommate, Bayo.
Through it all, Sommy is haunted by guilt over her brother Mezie's attempted suicide just two weeks before she left her homeland for the United States. She's also frustrated that Mezie answers her frequent phone calls and text messages with silence, leaving her to wonder what he's thinking and where their relationship stands.
Okonkwo astutely captures the awkwardness and insecurities of a young woman from any country or culture starting an independent life as an adult. She also shows how relationships with family members can change when young people reach adulthood and head out on their own.
While still involved with Bayo, Sommy falls for Bryan, who was born to a white mother and a Nigerian father he never knew. After Sommy carries out her deceit for some time, Bayo eventually learns that his roommate is now with someone else and leaves deeply hurt.
Bryan and Sommy form a serious relationship and make plans to visit Nigeria so he can track down his father.
When they finally make the trip, Bryan's quest to finally know his dad turns out to be highly disappointing. Sommy has some luck connecting with her brother, but she sees him with different eyes now that she's an adult.
An unexpected tragedy during the Nigeria visit suddenly changes everyone's future forever.

Eurovision, the world's largest live music event, to take place in Vienna next year
VIENNA (AP) — The Eurovision Song Contest 2026 will take place in Vienna. Austria's public broadcaster ORF, which will organize the world's largest live music event, announced the location Wednesday morning. Following Austrian singer JJ's victory with 'Wasted Love' in Basel this spring, the music competition will be held in May 2026 at the Wiener Stadthalle. 'After thorough examination and based on a unanimous jury assessment, ORF has concluded that Vienna's bid is the most attractive not only in terms of infrastructure and logistics, but also economically," ORF Director General Roland Weißmann said. Innsbruck also applied to host the event. It will be Vienna's third time as host, following 1967 and 2015. 'As mayor of Vienna, I am naturally delighted that Vienna has prevailed and will once again represent Austria next year. I am convinced that we will have a wonderful May together,' Mayor Michael Ludwig wrote on X. Eurovision's finale will take place May 16 after the semi-finals are held May 12 and 14, 2026. JJ, whose winning song combined operatic, multi-octave vocals with a techno twist, and who also sings at the Vienna State Opera, won the contest in May. JJ, whose full name is Johannes Pietsch, was Austria's third Eurovision winner, after Conchita Wurst in 2014 and Udo Jürgens in 1966. The song contest is always held in the country whose singer won the competition. The last Eurovision song contest, which has been uniting and dividing Europeans since 1956, was watched by 160 million viewers.

ATP partners with TikTok to capitalize on the rise of behind-the-scenes content
NEW YORK (AP) — The newest popular influencer on TikTok's 'For You" page might be the scroller's favorite tennis player. At least, the ATP hopes so. The governing body of men's professional tennis announced Tuesday it will be partnering with TikTok to further develop tennis content and bolster engagement on the platform. The partnership is two-fold. One of its stated goals is player engagement, aimed at helping more ATP players build up followings on the platform and give tennis fans 'exclusive behind-the-scenes' access to the sport, according to a press release. Its other goal is the creation of the 'Tennis Creator Network,' an initiative that will help existing non-athlete creators create TikTok content at ATP tour events. 'This strategic content partnership with TikTok builds on current trends with our audiences, places ATP at the forefront of the intersection of culture and sport, and creates discoverable content that cuts through for both players and tournaments,' Andrew Walker, senior vice president of brand and marketing for the ATP, said in the release. Currently, only 20 of the ATP's top 100 players have a presence on TikTok. Some of those 20 have become verifiable stars on the platform — Carlos Alcaraz has 1.1 million followers, Novak Djokovic has 666,000 and Ben Shelton has 448,000, to look at the upper echelon. They share everything from behind-the-scenes looks at tournaments to clips of them mowing the lawn and learning calligraphy. The ATP TikTok account itself has nearly 600,000 followers. The partnership is an acknowledgement of a blazing trend in sports media — candid, behind-the-scenes content created by athletes. Its popularity and virality is on the rise, manifesting itself everywhere from TikTok accounts to podcast studios. In July, a pair of Minnesota Lynx players — Courtney Williams and Natisha Hiedeman, nicknamed 'The Studbudz' — amassed hundreds of thousands of views and followers after live streaming the entirety of WNBA All-Star weekend, parties and all. The duo have now turned the momentum into official merchandise and newfound stardom. Athlete-hosted podcasts, with an hour of casual conversation from star athletes, have also repeatedly become headline makers. 'New Heights' with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is an obvious one, but shows like Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham's 'Show me something' have spiked similar engagement as their hosts offer candid insight into life beyond the game.
