1924: Friends Nathan 'Babe' Leopold Jr. and Richard 'Dickie' Loeb — the pampered sons of prominent Kenwood families — killed Robert 'Bobby' Franks after they offered him a ride home from school.
To the public, Franks' death appeared to have been orchestrated for money and for thrill. But the two brilliant masterminds behind the crime simply referred to it as a 'perfect murder' — for which they believed they could outsmart the authorities and would never stand trial.
After they dumped the boy's body near Wolf Lake in Indiana, they confessed to the murder and were brought to trial for what became the 'crime of the century.'
1927: Aviator Charles Lindbergh landed in Paris at 10:21 p.m. after flying for 33 hours and 29 minutes from New York. It was the first nonstop transatlantic flight executed by one person.
'Am I in Paris?' were Lindbergh's first words as he was dragged out of the cockpit of his plane, 'The Spirit of St. Louis.'
'You're here,' Tribune reporter Henry Wales — the first to greet the pilot — said.
1943: The Chicago White Sox won the fastest nine-inning game in American League history under the lights at Comiskey Park. The Sox beat the Washington Senators 1-0 in 1 hour and 29 minutes.
The fastest complete game in MLB history lasted just 51 minutes.
2017: A jewel-encrusted Asprey & Co. mystery clock, valued at $425,000, was stolen from an antiques exhibition at Merchandise Mart.

Today in Chicago History: Bulls win 1st championship — and Michael Jordan named MVP of NBA Finals

Weather records (from the National Weather Service, Chicago) 1966: In Humboldt Park, white Chicago police Officer Thomas Munyon shot Arcelis Cruz, a young Puerto Rican man, in the leg. The incident ignited two days of rioting along Division Street that sprang from deep frustrations over bad police relations, poor schools and uncaring landlords. On the first day of unrest, the Tribune reported, three squad cars were burned, 35 people were arrested and 19 people were injured. Stores along Division Street were looted and set on fire. A firebomb was thrown into Schley Elementary School. Firefighters had a hose wrested from their hands as they tried to extinguish the flames of a burning police car. A Tribune photographer was robbed of his camera, beaten and kicked, until neighborhood residents rescued him. The nearby St. Mary's Hospital treated both civilians and police officers. The violence subsided after a heavy rainfall and hundreds of police officers were placed on patrol in the area. 1991: The Chicago Bulls won the first NBA championship in the team's 25-year history with a 108-101 victory in Game 5 of the NBA Finals over the Los Angeles Lakers. MVP Michael Jordan scored 30 points, Scottie Pippen had 32 and John Paxson added 20. The Bulls won three straight on the road at the Forum. Christian music star Michael Tait admits to ‘double life' amid sexual assault, drug abuse allegations: ‘Sadly, largely true'
Grammy award-winning Christian rock singer Michael Tait admitted the drug abuse and sexual assault accusations against him are 'mostly true,' in his first public comments since the bombshell claims surfaced. Tait, the former frontman for Newsboys and DC Talk, said he was living a double life as he allegedly abused hardcore substances with younger men before making unwanted advances toward them, according to Christian media outlet The Roys Report. The 59-year-old addressed the accusations in an Instagram post titled, 'My Confession — June 10, 2025.' Advertisement 'Recent reports of my reckless and destructive behavior, including drug and alcohol abuse and sexual activity are sadly, largely true,' Tait wrote. 'For some two decades I used and abused cocaine, consumed far too much alcohol and, at times, touched men in an unwanted sensual way.' 'I am ashamed of my life choices and actions, and make no excuses for them. I will simply call it what God calls it — sin. I don't blame anyone or anything but myself. Tait allegedly befriended multiple people while on tour, including three men in 2004, 2010 and 2014, respectively. 'I was, for the most part, living two distinctly different lives. I was not the same person on stage Sunday night as I was at home on Monday.' The current members of Newsboys — Jody Davis, Duncan Phillips, Jeff Frankenstein and Adam Agee — were left 'shattered' over the allegations against Tait. 'Last night our hearts were shattered when we read the news alleging drug abuse and inappropriate sexual actions by our former lead singer, Michael Tait,' the band wrote on Instagram Tuesday. 'I have hurt so many people in so many ways, and I will live with that shameful reality the rest of my life. I can only dream and pray for human forgiveness, because I certainly don't deserve it,' he said. 'I have even accepted the thought that God may be the only One who ultimately and completely forgives me.'

Burglars hit home of Bay Area death metal guitarist days after fatal police shooting
Two men have been charged with breaking into death metal guitarist Brian Montana's home to steal his credit cards and car just days after he was shot and killed by police following a violent neighborhood standoff, authorities said. Richard Vaka, of Newark, and Norman Desumala, of Fremont, were arrested June 5 after a South San Francisco Police Department investigation tied them to a burglary on the 300 block of Arroyo Drive that occurred May 2 — four days after Montana's fatal confrontation with police. The break-in took place shortly after 6 a.m., while the residence was unoccupied, according to police. Montana's friend Rob Estrada noted on Facebook that the guitarist's family still lived in the home, though they had stayed elsewhere immediately following the shooting. 'The suspects forced entry into a home that had been temporarily vacated following a tragic neighborhood incident, before stealing personal property and a vehicle,' the department wrote in a Facebook post on June 9. Detectives identified the suspects through a witness description and evidence that one of the stolen credit cards had been used at a Bay Area casino later that day. Vaka and Desumala were later taken into custody during an unrelated police encounter in Fremont, officials said. Vaka faces charges of first-degree burglary, vehicle theft and grand theft. Desumala has been charged with theft and fraud-related offenses. Both men were booked into Alameda County Jail and remain in custody. Montana, 60, was killed April 28 during an extended exchange of gunfire with police that began after a dispute with a neighbor over fallen tree debris. According to authorities, he fired multiple weapons — including a handgun, shotgun and rifle — at officers and homes before he was fatally shot. An early member of Possessed, Montana played on the band's influential 1984 'Death Metal' demo, widely credited with coining the name of the genre. Though he left before the release of the debut album, 'Seven Churches,' his role in the band's formation helped define its aggressive sound. The band paid tribute to Montana in an Instagram post shortly after his death. 'Brian Montana was a very nice guy,' the caption read. 'He was jovial and a gentleman. He was into martial arts and he was an excellent guitar player. Brian was always cracking jokes and he was a good person. Although we weren't in touch often and more than a phone call here and there. The Brian I know is from when we were still just kids back in the beginning of Possessed. He was nothing like what I'm seeing being written about him. In fact, I think that's one of the reasons that led to him leaving Possessed. He just wasn't willing to be as dark as we wanted him to be at that time. We were going for that evil imagery, and Brian was just so lighthearted, even goofy in a good way.' The band went on to ask for the public to respect the privacy of his family and close friends as they continue to mourn his death. 'He was obviously going through some struggles and I think this is the time to be respectful towards the Montana family and friends as this is a tragic time for them,' Possessed wrote. 'I'm sure there's a lot more to this story but that would be up to Brian's family to tell or not to tell. I know that I still feel this is a great loss and I'm deeply saddened.'
