The bench of Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Basant Balaji adjourned the matter to June 30 for a detailed hearing. The NHRC had issued the direction on Oct 1, 2024, based on a petition filed by Sandeep Vachaspathi, spokesperson of the BJP in Kerala. In his petition, Vachaspathi requested an investigation into the incident and action against the students involved, as well as against the dean of the college.
Sidharthan was found hanging in the bathroom of the college hostel on Feb 18, 2024.
Nineteen students were arrested in connection with the incident, and the investigation was later handed over to CBI. The CBI chargesheet revealed that Sidharthan had been stripped, assaulted and subjected to a public trial in the men's hostel courtyard. He was allegedly harassed continuously for two days before his death.
The NHRC had forwarded the complaint to the Wayanad district collector for appropriate action. On May 10, 2024, the commission issued a show cause notice to the chief secretary, asking why compensation of Rs 7 lakh should not be recommended to the victim's parents. Although the state filed a reply, the NHRC found that the suicide occurred within the hostel premises and concluded that there was negligence on the part of the hostel authorities.
Consequently, it directed the govt to pay compensation, prompting the state to move HC. The govt contended that the order issued by the NHRC lacks statutory authority and that the proceedings are illegal.

According to the FIR registered at the Tughlaq Road police station, the government officer had left for Spain and Italy for vacation with his family on June 13 and was scheduled to return to India on the night of June 29. Around 8.47 am that day, while he was at the Abu Dhabi airport in transit to Delhi, his house help, Janki, informed him over the phone that the main door of his residence was broken, the complaint read. "The homeowner immediately asked her to inspect the house along with their residential guard, Manish Kumar. On entering, they found one safe broken and cupboards open. Probe Agency Arrests West Bengal Man Who Extorted Money By Posing As Its Officer
New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate on Thursday said it has arrested a man from West Bengal who allegedly impersonated as its officer and extorted money from businessmen by threatening them with money laundering investigation or on the pretext of settling an ongoing probe. S K Jinnar Ali was taken into custody after raids were conducted at various locations in Kolkata and Bardhaman on Wednesday. A special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court sent him to ED custody till July 16, the agency said in a statement. The money laundering case stems from an FIR registered by Bidhannagar police station in Kolkata against some people who extorted money from businessmen by portraying themselves as ED officers, it said. "The modus operandi involved identifying certain businessmen and targeting them to extort money. Such businessmen would be contacted by the accused over phone. "The accused also summoned the businessmen to appear in front of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate, under the pretense of an official inquiry which, in reality, does not exist," the ED said. To create an illusion of legitimacy, the accused individuals would arrive in a Toyota Fortuner car, which displayed an ED insignia, it said. The ED found that under "repeated" threats of office raids, property seizure and arrest, a businessman was coerced to pay Rs 1.30 crore in cash and Rs 20 lakh in the bank account of an accused. Ali was also "involved" in cheating money from other victims by false assurances of helping in ongoing investigations. In one such instance, he "extorted" Rs 1.5 crore from a victim, the agency said. Two vehicles (Honda Amaze and Hyundai Aura) owned by Ali and his wife were seized during the searches and deposits worth Rs 45.89 lakh lying in his and his wife's bank accounts apart from that in the account of a company named Sparklink Management Service Private Limited have been frozen, it said. The ED said it also seized forged letters in the name of the central agency and other government authorities bearing fabricated seals and forged signatures. Also, multiple lanyards printed with "Government of India" were recovered from Ali's residence. Besides, a letterhead of the Ministry of Home Affairs embossed with the Ashoka Emblem (State Emblem of India) was also seized by the agency sleuths. "Jinnar Ali projected himself as the chairman of an organisation named The National Anti-Trafficking Committee. On its website he claims that it is a national organisation established in 1962 and registered under NITI Aayog, vide no. WB/2018/0203440 Government of India. "The website is designed to resemble an official government domain, thereby misleading the public into believing it is a legitimate government website," the ED said. The agency said people should not fall prey to such fraudsters and check summons issued to them at a link provided on the ED website --

Bengaluru Ferrari Owner Evades Road Tax, Made To Pay Rs 1.42 Crore
In a high-octane crackdown on tax evasion, a Ferrari owner was forced to shell out Rs 1.42 crore after Regional Transport Office officials caught the luxury supercar being used on the streets of Bengaluru without road tax being paid in Karnataka. The red Ferrari SF90 Stradale, which has a starting price of 7.5 crore, has been attracting eyeballs in the city over the past few months. On Thursday morning, officials from the Bengaluru South RTO located the Ferrari, which was registered in Maharashtra, and verified its tax status. Upon confirming that tax had not been paid, they seized the vehicle and issued a formal notice to the owner, giving time until evening to make the payment. The notice also warned of legal consequences in case of non-compliance. Acting swiftly, the owner cleared the entire dues and penalties amounting to Rs 1,41,59,041. According to officials, this is one of the largest single-vehicle tax recoveries in recent memory. The department has said that it will continue cracking down on luxury vehicles operating without valid tax payments. In February, the transport department had seized 30 luxury cars including Ferraris, Porsches, BMWs, Audis, Aston Martins and Range Rovers for tax evasion. Over 40 RTO officers were involved in the operation.
