Woke pro-trans fencing chief left red faced in brutal dressing down at DOGE hearing
Damien Lehfeldt first made headlines last month, when a female fencer named Stephanie Turner refused to fight a transgender rival during a competition.
The incident shone a light on USA Fencing and on Lehfeldt, who previously wrote in a blog post that 'transgender women are women' and '(they) deserve the right to compete with the gender they identify with.'
Since returning to office, however, Donald Trump has signed an executive order entitled 'Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports'.
On Wednesday, both Turner and Lehfeldt appeared at a hearing involving a Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency (DOGE). The hearing was shown a photo, apparently posted on social media by Lehfeldt, in which he made a profane two-finger gesture at the camera with the caption 'Game day'.
Lehfeldt was grilled by lawmakers including chairwoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, with his governing body accused of 'ignoring science' and putting 'politics ahead of women and the law.'

Greene pressed him on why USA Fencing's 'site selection policy' for tournaments takes into account an area's policies on abortion and LGBT rights.
'We try to have tournaments in sites that are safe for all of our members. Period,' he said.
But Lehfeldt refused to answer whether he would 'want (his) daughter to change in front of biological men in locker rooms? Yes or no.'
The chairman responded to Greene: 'My daughter isn't really something that should be part of this hearing, respectfully.'
Greene later posted a clip of the incident on social media and wrote: 'He couldn't say 'NO.' That tells you EVERYTHING. These people have lost all common sense.'
During another excruciating exchange, Lehfeldt was pressed on previous comments he made about opponents to transgender athletes competing in women's sports.
'Do you think that parents who don't want their daughters competing against men in women's sports are "whiney",' Republican Congressman Brandon Gill asked him.
After Lehfeldt said, 'No, sir,' Gill responded: 'Why did you write that on social media? I have a picture here where you posted that.'
The congressman held up a screenshot. 'You were allegedly responding to a parent who didn't want their daughter being beaten up by men in sports competitions. (You wrote) "I'm not going to pull her from the sport and write and whiney email announcing my departure."'
In his alleged reply, he ripped into a concerned 'Dorothy' and called her a 'cowardly Lion'
Lehfeldt admitted his comments were 'inappropriate' but Gill then pressed him on another social media comment when he called opponents 'cowardly'.
'I regret it sir, I deleted it shortly after posting it and I certainly don't feel that way anymore.'
As the chairman attempted to explain his position, Gill interrupted and asked: 'Do you think parents who don't want their daughters competing against men in sports should be compared to the Ku Klux Klan?'
Lehfeldt responded, 'No. Absolutely not', only for Gill to dig up another 'receipt'.
'I'd like to read what you wrote and posted on social media, responding allegedly to a lady who had these concerns,' he said before quoting Lehfedlt.
'The only wizard that's going to dig you out of the myopic hole you've put yourself and your family in is one of the "grand wizard" variety.'
Grand Wizard is a title traditionally given to a leader of the Klan, a white supremacist organization dating back the era of Reconstruction.
'(It's) inappropriate, sir,' Lehfeldt admitted. 'I acknowledge that I said it and I will commit to never making a message like that again.'
The chairman insisted the email he received was real but admitted he did not send the replies he posted to social media.
Turner, meanwhile, claimed she was left feeling 'isolated and strangled' by USA Fencing, having spent '7,000 hours training and over $100,000' on her fencing career.
Lehfeldt said the organization would comply with law changes regarding transgender athletes in women's sports.

'Gender participation in sports is a complex topic,' he said, adding that 'considerations of safety and fairness are paramount.'
But in a statement to Outkick, USA Fencing suggested its transgender policy is out of its hands: 'USA Fencing remains dedicated to maintaining a fair, respectful environment where every athlete can participate.
'Our current transgender and non-binary eligibility policy, adopted in 2023, reflects guidance from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC).'
The statement continued: 'Because the Ted Stevens Act bars us from adopting participation requirements more stringent than those of our international federation (FIE), we must mirror that framework. Should Congress amend the Act, or the IOC/FIE change their standards, USA Fencing will adjust accordingly.'

Outline emerges of Putin's offer to end his war in Ukraine
LONDON, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Russia would relinquish tiny pockets of occupied Ukraine and Kyiv would cede swathes of its eastern land which Moscow has been unable to capture, under peace proposals discussed by Russia's Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump at their Alaska summit, sources briefed on Moscow's thinking said. The account emerged the day after Trump and Putin met at an airforce base in Alaska, the first encounter between a U.S. president and the Kremlin chief since before the start of the Ukraine conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is due to travel to Washington on Monday to discuss with Trump a possible settlement of the full-scale war, which Putin launched in February 2022. Although the summit failed to secure the ceasefire he said he had wanted, Trump said in an interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity that he and Putin had discussed land transfers and security guarantees for Ukraine, and had "largely agreed". "I think we're pretty close to a deal," he said, adding: "Ukraine has to agree to it. Maybe they'll say 'no'." The two sources, who requested anonymity to discuss sensitive matters, said their knowledge of Putin's proposals was mostly based on discussions between leaders in Europe, the U.S. and Ukraine, and noted it was not complete. Trump briefed Zelenskiy and European leaders on his summit discussions early on Saturday. It was not immediately clear if the proposals by Putin were an opening gambit to serve as a starting point for negotiations or more like a final offer that was not subject to discussion. At face value, at least some of the demands would present huge challenges for Ukraine's leadership to accept. Putin's offer ruled out a ceasefire until a comprehensive deal is reached, blocking a key demand of Zelenskiy, whose country is hit daily by Russian drones and ballistic missiles. Under the proposed Russian deal, Kyiv would fully withdraw from the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions in return for a Russian pledge to freeze the front lines in the southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, the sources said. Ukraine has already rejected any retreat from Ukrainian land such as the Donetsk region, where its troops are dug in and which Kyiv says serves as a crucial defensive structure to prevent Russian attacks deeper into its territory. Russia would be prepared to return comparatively small tracts of Ukrainian land it has occupied in the northern Sumy and northeastern Kharkiv regions, the sources said. Russia holds pockets of the Sumy and Kharkiv regions that total around 440 square km, according to Ukraine's Deep State battlefield mapping project. Ukraine controls around 6,600 square km of Donbas, which comprises the Donetsk and Luhansk regions and is claimed by Russia. Although the Americans have not spelled this out, the sources said they knew Russia's leader was also seeking - at the very least - formal recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimea, which Moscow seized from Ukraine in 2014. It was not clear if that meant recognition by the U.S. government or, for instance, all Western powers and Ukraine. Kyiv and its European allies reject formal recognition of Moscow's rule in the peninsula. They said Putin would also expect the lifting of at least some of the array of sanctions on Russia. However, they could not say if this applied to U.S. as well as European sanctions. Trump said on Friday he did not immediately need to consider retaliatory tariffs on countries such as China for buying Russian oil - which is subject to a range of Western sanctions - but might have to "in two or three weeks." Ukraine would also be barred from joining the NATO military alliance, though Putin seemed to be open to Ukraine receiving some kind of security guarantees, the sources said. However, they added that it was unclear what this meant in practice. European leaders said Trump had discussed security guarantees for Ukraine during their conversation on Saturday and also broached an idea for an "Article 5"-style guarantee outside the NATO military alliance. NATO regards any attack launched on one of its 32 members as an attack on all under its Article 5 clause. Joining the Atlantic alliance is a strategic objective for Kyiv that is enshrined in the country's constitution. Russia would also demand official status for the Russian language inside parts of, or across, Ukraine, as well as the right of the Russian Orthodox Church to operate freely, the sources said. Ukraine's security agency accuses the Moscow-linked church of abetting Russia's war on Ukraine by spreading pro-Russian propaganda and housing spies, something denied by the church which says it has cut canonical ties with Moscow. Ukraine has passed a law banning Russia-linked religious organisations, of which it considers the church to be one. However, it has not yet started enforcing the ban.

Bill Belichick refuses to take part in college football tradition as 73-year-old nears first game with UNC
has decided he won't take part in a traditional requirement of North Carolina 's football head coach this season. It has been announced that the eight-time Super Bowl winner won't participate in the Tar Heels' traditional coach's radio show throughout the year. Belichick, 73, will appear on the first episode of the season on August 27 but will not be on the show again. Instead, he will be replaced by the Tar Heels' general manager Michael Lombardi. He will be joined by various assistant coaches and players throughout the season. The show was previously known as 'Mack Brown Live' after the former head coach but now it has been rebranded to 'Carolina Football Live', owing to Belichick's decision to not be a regular guest. The plan is for the show to still be aired on a weekly basis from Top of the Hill Restaurant & Brewery near the school's Chapel Hill campus. A coach's weekly radio show is common across college football and gives fans an opportunity to ask the team's leader some questions. The premise of the shows has changed in recent years, going from live phone calls with coaches to fans sending their questions in via text or email. Some coaches have appearing on a weekly radio show written into their contract but there was no such demand added to Belichick's deal. It emerged earlier this week that the influence of Belichick's 24-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson is now spilling over into the recovery methods of the team. Belichick stunned football fans with his strength and flexibility earlier this year when he was pictured hoisting Hudson into the air during a beach date with his girlfriend. And now it's emerged that the legendary coach is using yoga to help his UNC players prepare for the new season. The 73-year-old is in his first ever college football role after joining the Tar Heels back in January. His tenure has so far been dominated by his relationship with Hudson and the 24-year-old's perceived influence on Belichick and UNC football. The couple went viral in March after Hudson shared pictures of them performing acrobatics on the beach. In one image, the 24-year-old could be seen lying horizontally on her boyfriend's outstretched legs. Belichick later joked that he is simply 'trying to stay young'. And this week, the six-time Super Bowl winner opened up on how yoga is now helping his players get in shape ahead of the new season. 'Yoga is a recovery technique. It's not really a training technique,' Belichick said. 'We use it more for recovery, and there are a lot of benefits to it. 'It's a good way after a couple, three, four days of practices to give the body a chance to recover, stretch, get the blood flowing, and so forth.'
