
Is AI Safe For Software Development?
It should come as no surprise that the common response to concerns about AI's safety for software development is: 'It depends.' AI is exceptional at many things, like handling common coding tasks. But when AI is forced to consider context or deal with incomplete instructions, you risk compromising software safety and security.
Software bugs are caused more often by insufficient requirements than poor code. Add AI to the mix and you introduce increased opportunities to compromise code quality, reliability, security and safety. Sure, AI makes it easy to automate software creation and testing—if you start with clearly understood instructions.
This same problem extends to the prompts given to the system to generate code or fixes. If the prompt is ambiguous, incomplete or otherwise incorrect, AI is unlikely to produce the correct code. Unfortunately, however, a lot of software development is designed using a move-fast-and-break-things philosophy due to inexact specifications and evolving rules.
Put AI on an imprecise path and the opportunity to veer off course grows significantly. Ambiguity is the enemy of software development, so it is reasonable to expect uncertainty to be one of the biggest obstacles to ensuring AI-produced software is safe for deployment.
AI In The Mirror
The phrase 'garbage in, garbage out' describes the results of working with vague specifications. AI exacerbates this issue because it has not learned yet how to recognize code quality.
Today, AI is a mirror of ourselves—not as individuals, but as a whole, because it looks at the sum of software code that humans have written and reflects it back to us. Since few objective measures exist for determining whether code is good or bad, AI simply looks for code that will solve the requirement it is given without taking quality into account.
While matching coding patterns can yield code that does what the developer wants, more learning is required to help AI recognize good coding practices. Major attributes must be considered, such as quality, security, performance and maintainability. Until then, early AI interactions are likely to recommend code that is not completely up to snuff. And it's not AI's fault, as it just echoes what is found without being able to apply context to the results.
The good news is that, over time, AI will become increasingly adept at discerning between good and bad code. But like newbies on your development team, it needs to be mentored first. Beginner programmers are not given unfettered access until they earn trust by proving their code is reliable, safe, maintainable, editable and scalable. Why should AI-generated code be different?
The Capricious Prodigy
Think of AI as a capricious prodigy who has the potential to be brilliant but occasionally does something idiotic without warning. Most days, this wunderkind quickly produces helpful code suggestions. While exceedingly clever, however, AI-driven solutions also can present a false sense of security that they know what they're doing all the time, even when that is not true.
Unfortunately, new whiz kids become easily distracted and careless unless given explicit directions. AI needs around-the-clock oversight from experienced programmers to improve accuracy. Skilled experts are ideally suited to discover early opportunities for AI to become a force multiplier. Armed with knowledge and experience, senior-level developers are poised to accomplish greater feats of creative problem solving through measured applications of AI.
I believe that when AI receives detailed guidance from development experts, the results can lift the entire team's productivity. Conversely, providing AI tools to everyone regardless of skill level is more likely to cause a precipitous drop in productivity along with a spike in software errors.
Not everyone agrees with this thinking, especially developers of AI-coding assistants and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. He told Joe Rogan earlier this year that AI will replace mid-level engineers soon.
While that is a great aspirational goal, I see it as unrealistic. What is most needed right now are vital protective barriers that safeguard development teams and give the new generation of capricious prodigies the best shot at success.
It's All About The Guardrails
Guardrails along highways prevent driving our cars off the road or into oncoming traffic. AI guardrails for software development perform similar functions by protecting teams from inadvertently introducing software bugs or security risks. That is why it is critical to share rules, best practices and automated controls that guide AI to move decisively within safe and efficient boundaries.
I cannot overstress the importance of peer review to ensure your capricious AI prodigy operates within specific parameters, encompassing everything from basic naming conventions to acceptable behaviors. Remember, constant coaching and immediate feedback play equally pivotal roles in training AI as well as mentoring the newest member of your development team.
Establishing effective guardrails is not about relying on a single tool, but about creating a strategic ecosystem of safeguards that reinforce one another. For example, static code analysis provides an extra measure of protection by examining code structure, syntax and patterns to find potential bugs, vulnerabilities and other violations—but this must be complemented by other foundational practices to ensure reliability and maintainability at every stage of the development lifecycle.
Approaches like automated static code analysis can function like a pair programmer or 'buddy system'—flagging bugs, vulnerabilities or deviations from coding standards in real time. When complemented by other approaches such as integrated code coverage or unit testing, these safeguards can help provide critical visibility across the development lifecycle.
To reap the benefits from AI to boost quality in software development and testing requires experience and mature internal processes. Quality must be viewed as integral to a complete ecosystem of safeguards to ensure seamless collaboration between software developers, testers and quality assurance teams. Regular check-ins, ongoing training, open communication and well-documented processes are essential to keeping pace with rapid AI advancements.
To increase AI's effectiveness and efficacy for software development, apply both the right mindset and testing methodologies to all code, generated by humans and AI alike. In doing so, we give AI the best opportunity to fulfill its potential to transform software development, safely and securely.

Amazon revenue and earnings were up 13% and 33%, respectively, beating expectations, and AWS sales grew by 17% to $30.9 billion. Amazon's release boasted about its largest Prime Day to date and new partnerships including a Nike (NYSE: NKE) storefront. But the focus was clearly on AI. CEO Andy Jassy in a statement said that "our conviction that AI will change every customer experience is starting to play out," noting the company's moves not just at AWS but across Alexa, robotics, and other areas. Amazon sees more growth ahead, predicting net sales to come in between $174 billion and $179.5 billion in the current quarter. That would be up 10% to 13% from a year ago, and even at the low end is above the $173 billion consensus. But all of that growth is coming at a price. Operating expenses in the quarter were up 11% to $148.5 billion, and free cash flow decreased to $18.2 billion for the trailing 12 months, from $53 billion a year ago. AWS's operating margin for the quarter fell to 32.9%, from 35.5% a year ago. Operating income in the current quarter is expected to come in between $15.5 billion and $20.5 billion. At the midpoint that suggests little growth over last year's $17.4 billion, and is slightly below analyst expectations. Immediate Market Reaction Investors were underwhelmed by the results. Amazon shares fell 3% in aftermarket trading following the release of the report but ahead of the company's call with investors. What to Watch The AWS growth, while impressive, on a percentage basis fell short of Microsoft's reported 34% growth at Azure. Microsoft surged post-earnings because the company successfully articulated the benefit of all of the AI spending. Investors will be eager to hear Jassy and other Amazon execs make the same case on the earnings call. Amazon is a lot more than AWS, posting 11% growth in product sales to $68 billion, while its advertising business was up 23% year over year. The company remains well positioned on many fronts, and is set up well to be a long-term winner. But in an environment where all eyes are on the investment -- and payoff -- of AI, investors have set a high bar on results and outlook. 2 Top Artificial Intelligence Stocks to Buy in August
Key Points Micron Technology trades at just 9.2 times forward earnings despite being Nvidia's preferred memory supplier. Alphabet runs businesses like YouTube, Waymo, Android, and Google Cloud, giving it many paths to future growth. Both stocks look undervalued next to their AI peers despite playing crucial roles in the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution. 10 stocks we like better than Alphabet › Many artificial intelligence (AI) specialists have seen their stocks skyrocket in the last couple of years. At the same time, some of the best names in the AI boom have been left behind. In particular, memory chip maker Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) and online services giant Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) look like fantastic buys right now. Their modest stock valuations don't reflect their massive growth opportunities. So if you're looking for an AI stock to buy in August, you should give Google's parent company and Micron another look. Read on and I'll get you started. Micron Technology looks like a bargain right now The memory chip market is notoriously cyclical. The handful of leading chip suppliers never seem to be ready when another tech trend results in massive demand for digital memory (smartphones, AI, and increasingly computerized cars are just three examples). Then they build out their manufacturing facilities until the demand driver fades out or the new supply simply grows too large. That's where unit prices drop, the memory industry goes into a mini-recession, and investors wait for the next surge in demand. You can see these cycles on Micron's stock chart, with a semi-predictable roller coaster ride with peaks and valleys. Importantly, each new top tends to be much higher than the last one. From that perspective, the AI-driven memory boom has been going on for about two years now. Some of the industry's cycles have seen two-year upswings followed by similar-sized downswings. And Micron's stock has gained 61% in the past two years -- maybe it's time for a correction? Some market makers sure seem to feel that way. Micron's stock trades at just 9.2 times forward earnings estimates today. Its price-to-earnings-to-growth (PEG) ratio is a minuscule 0.2. As a reminder, a PEG ratio around 1.0 indicates a fair valuation, in terms of proven profits and upcoming growth. Values in Micron's range suggest that investors aren't convinced by optimistic growth targets, or worried about the company's financial future, or both. But Micron's sales rose by 58% in the past two years, while trailing free cash flows swung from a $4.7 billion negative reading to $1.9 billion of positive cash profits. Micron is the preferred memory provider for Nvidia's (NASDAQ: NVDA) latest and greatest AI accelerators. Modern smartphones ship with lots of extra memory in order to handle their built-in AI functions. In short, the growth catalysts just keep coming. Micron is playing a very active part in the AI revolution, but the stock is acting like it's just another short-lived upswing. If you believe that AI will drive business growth for years to come, Micron should be on your short list of stocks to buy right now. Alphabet is playing the long game Alphabet's stock has gained just 3% in 2025. That's far behind Nvidia's 31%, or even the 8% increase in the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) market index. And in the valuation corner, the Google parent's stock could double in price and still look affordable next to market darlings like Nvidia. That approximate ratio holds firm across many different valuation metrics, from price-to-earnings to cash-flow valuations. Moreover, I think of Nvidia as a one-trick pony while Alphabet always has another trick up its sleeve. Let me explain. Sure, Nvidia's pony is an incredibly impressive racehorse that has taken Nvidia's business results to lofty heights in recent years. Still, I wonder what might happen to its high-flying stock if and when another chip maker starts winning large AI system contracts under Nvidia's nose. I'm not even speculating here. Longtime Nvidia rival Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) already offers a competitive solution in its Instinct product range. Furthermore, major buyers such as Alphabet and Amazon are designing their own custom AI chips nowadays. I'm not convinced that Nvidia's golden years will last much longer. At the same time, Alphabet was built to last. The online search and advertising market won't be there forever, and the Google parent has been preparing for that sea change since forever. Alright, since 2014. Same thing in this ever-changing tech sector. Alphabet runs a leading media-streaming platform (YouTube), an early robotaxi specialist (Waymo), and the world's busiest mobile platform (Android). The Google Cloud service isn't dominating its market, but puts up a serious fight while developing cloud-based AI tools. Looking ahead, the company's next big idea might be medical research, or remote internet access, or maybe something I haven't heard of yet. Either way, Alphabet plans to stick around for decades, and its stock is on fire sale right now. Alphabet is pretty much always a decent buy -- it's just an even better idea these days. Apple Posts Better-Than-Expected Earnings as Services Revenue Hits Record High
Apple (AAPL) reported fiscal third-quarter earnings that topped analysts' expectations, as its services revenue hit a record high. The iPhone maker posted revenue of $94.04 billion, up 10% year-over-year and above the analyst consensus from Visible Alpha. Net income of $23.43 billion, or $1.57 per share, rose from $21.45 billion, or $1.40 per share, a year earlier, topping Wall Street's estimates. Apple's services revenue improved 13% to a record $27.42 billion, above expectations. Apple's iPhone sales climbed 13% to $44.58 billion, ahead of projections, while Mac sales rose 15% to $8.05 billion, and iPad sales decreased 8% to $6.58 billion. Apple shares gained more than 2% in after-hours trading. The stock was down 17% for 2025 through Thursday's close. CEO Tim Cook Says Apple Is 'Significantly Growing' AI Investments CEO Tim Cook told investors on the company's earnings call that Apple is "significantly growing" its investments in AI and reallocating employees within the company to focus on development, but didn't provide a specific figure. A more personalized, AI-powered version of Apple's Siri virtual assistant is expected to launch in 2026, Cook confirmed. Significant delays have raised pressure on Apple to prove it can compete with other tech leaders on AI development. Cook also said Apple absorbed roughly $800 million in tariff-related costs during the third quarter, and expects to take a $1.1 billion hit in the current quarter, assuming tariff levels remain the same. Last week, Morgan Stanley analysts cautioned that the Trump administration could soon subject Apple to Section 232 tariffs, which are tied to national security concerns.
