Youth pay tribute to freedom fighters on anniversary of Quit India movement in Mysuru
Activists and students gathered for a quiet remembrance of the historic call for freedom from the British when Mahatma Gandhi gave the Quit India call on August 8, 1942, in Mumbai (then Bombay), with the movement officially beginning on August 9, 1942.
The occasion was also remembered by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah who was in the city on Saturday. He extended his greetings to the people, recalling the Quit India Movement and the sacrifices made by millions that culminated in the country gaining independence from the British rule.
The Quit India movement was also the final phase of India's freedom struggle; but for Mysuru, this holds even more significance as it heralded the entry of the region to the mainstream national movement against British imperialism.
Historians attribute the late entry of the Mysuru region to the freedom movement to the benevolent nature of the rule of the latter Wadiyars, which provided cushioning from the despotism of the British rule.
The Mysore Gazetteer notes that national consciousness had already permeated among the masses during the early 1900s, and inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, there were social movements promoting 'khadi', seeking ban on liquor, promotion of swadeshi goods, temple entry movement, etc.
Tagadur Ramachandra Rao had started Khaddar movement to popularise the use of 'khadi' to help rural communities earn their livelihood, a cause supported by Mahatma Gandhi, who visited Mysuru twice.
When the Quit India call was issued, the student community and activists in Mysuru were on the forefront, and inspired by the national tide, the region witnessed rallies, processions, and snap strikes.
The decades of groundwork done to improve social conditions had also paved way for an undercurrent of nationalistic sentiments, culminating in students' participation in the movement in a big way.
Till recently in Mysuru, anniversaries of important events associated with freedom struggle used to be graced by the generation which participated in those events. But with each passing year, their numbers are on the decline and that generation is fast fading away. But given the importance of the event, the spirit of the struggle and the reverence for their sacrifices, continue to be recalled.

Opposition's '124 Not Out' poster girl is 35, blames EC for fault
PATNA: Minta Devi, the "124 Not Out" poster girl of INDIA bloc's "vote chori" protest in Delhi, surfaced Tuesday to declare she was 35 and blame the additional 89 years on a clerical typing error that led to her year of birth being recorded as 1900 instead of 1990. The voter from Daraundha in Bihar 's Siwan also pointed out an even more bizarre data-entry error - her husband Dhananjay Kumar Singh's name as their "house number". "This is Election Commission 's fault. I submitted my documents online, but now everyone is asking about my age," she told reporters. Minta said she didn't notice the incorrect birth year on her voter card - "15-07-1900" - until after the controversy broke. Siwan DM Aditya Prakash acknowledged the "typographical error", saying a computer operator was to blame. "The correction will be done within a week," he told TOI. Deputy election officer Sohail Ahmad confirmed that Minta had applied for rectification. Bihar's SIR of the electoral rolls has revealed two other "centurions" - 120 and 119, based on official data. One is Asha Devi of Bhagalpur's Pirpainti. The other is Manturia Devi, in Barauli seat of Gopalganj. After the deputy election officer of Bhagalpur ordered an inquiry into Asha Devi's age, designated BLO Farzana Khatoon visited the location, checked her Aadhaar card and spoke to villagers to confirm that she was 120, states an official report. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Remember Him? Adivasi students demand certificates based on specific castes for Assam tea workers
1 2 3 4 5 6 Dibrugarh: Hundreds of members of the All Adivasi Students' Association of Assam (Aasaa) protested on NH-37 at Makum in Tinsukia district on Tuesday, seeking the issuance of caste certificates based on specific Adivasi identities rather than the current broad categorisation. The protesters argued that the existing system overlooks the diverse cultural and historical identities of the 108 castes and sub-castes within Assam's tea community. Currently, Assam govt issues other backward classes (OBC) caste certificates to the tea community under four categories — tea garden labourers, tea garden tribes, ex-tea garden labourers, and ex-tea garden tribes. The Aasaa claimed this classification erases the distinct identities of communities such as Santhal, Oraon, Munda, Kharia, Bhumij, Teli, Tanti, Kurmi, Karmakar, Mahato, Nagbansi, Kanika, and Rajgarh, among others. "Our identity is being diluted. We are not just 'tea tribes' or 'tea labourers'. We belong to specific castes with rich histories and cultures. The govt must recognise us as Santhals, Oraons, Mundas, and so on, not just as a homogenous group tied to the tea industry. We demand the caste certificates be issued as per our caste or sub-caste," said Albert Oreya, president of Aassa's Tinsukia district unit, leading the protest. The Adivasi tea workers trace their roots back to the early 19th century, when the British brought them from the Chotanagpur plateau to work in Assam's tea estates. Despite their long-standing presence in the state, the community feels their distinct identities remain unrecognised. "Our ancestors were brought to Assam by the British to work in tea estates. We are the indigenous people of Assam. In other states like Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, they are given caste certificates based on their specific caste. We want this in Assam as well," Oreya added. The protesters warned of political consequences if their demands are not met. "We demand that the BJP govt resolves this issue before the upcoming Assam assembly elections, otherwise our whole community will boycott the party," the Aasaa leader said. The demonstration concluded with the submission of a memorandum to the local circle officer, urging the govt to amend the current caste certificate policy. Aasaa has vowed to intensify their agitation if their demands are not addressed promptly. The issue has gained traction ahead of the state elections, with the Adivasi community asserting their right to distinct recognition beyond their association with the tea industry. ‘Supercentenarians' puzzle EC;124-year-old turns out to be 35
1 2 3 Patna: Bihar's ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has produced a mix of bafflement, amusement and embarrassment — from confirmed cases of voters aged well over a century to a clerical blunder that turned a 35-year-old into a supposed 124-year-old icon of political protest. According to the Election Commission , officials engaged in the SIR drive recently identified two women electors who are 120 and 119 years old, living in Bhagalpur and Gopalganj districts respectively. In Bhagalpur's Pirpainti assembly constituency, 120-year-old Asha Devi was found "alive, with wrinkles all over her face" after initial doubts about her age. Deputy election officials ordered a verification, during which BLO Farzana Khatoon checked her Aadhaar card and spoke to villagers. "During the inquiry, Asha Devi was found alive, and her age is 120," Khatoon wrote in her report. Similarly, in Gopalganj's Barauli constituency, 119-year-old Manturia Devi's age was confirmed through physical verification in the presence of the BLO and an observer. The assistant electoral registration officer stated in his letter that her reported age "was found correct". Interestingly, Ethel Caterham, a 115-year-old British woman, currently holds the title of the world's oldest living person. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Secret Lives of the Romanovs — the Last Rulers of Imperial Russia! Minta Devi of Daraundha constituency, celebrated by opposition MPs as a "124-year-old voter" during their "vote-chori" protest in Parliament, is in fact just 35. Her apparent longevity was the result of a voter ID slip that recorded her birth year as 1900 instead of 1990. "This is purely the fault of the Election Commission," she told a television news channel. "My year of birth is 1990 and I submitted the documents online, but now everyone is asking about my age." She admitted she had not checked her card when it arrived. "When the controversy broke out, I took out the card and found '15-07-1900' printed as my date of birth," she said. Her husband's name had even been placed in the 'house number' field. Siwan DM Aditya Prakash called it a "typographical error" caused when "she cited 1990 as her year of birth and this changed to 1900 due to a typo error by the computer operator". The correction, he said, "will be done within a week". Deputy election officer Sohail Ahmad confirmed she had applied through Form 6 and assured the error "will be disposed of within the stipulated time."
