Genpact's recent decision to increase daily work hours to ten has sparked criticism from both employees and HR experts, who argue that the move goes against progressive workplace practices. Employees have taken to social media to voice their concerns, citing fears over increased productivity monitoring and a negative impact on work-life balance.The change, communicated internally around 20 days ago, is set to be implemented by mid-June. According to The Hindi, the announcement has created unease among staff, particularly at the company's Hyderabad offices, where tensions are reportedly high.A number of employees have taken to social media to slam the decision.Under the new system, the employees explained, 'productivity' will be monitored through an internal portal that tracks daily active hours.'If I clock the allotted time, I earn 500 points per month, which is worth ₹3,000. We have been told that 5% of it, which is ₹150 in my case, will be paid for the additional time. It hardly feels like an incentive.'"Wow @Genpact really said, "Forget a life outside work!" Nah, Genpact's your soulmate now," said a user on X.The employee also noted that the 10-hour policy isn't even official, but is passed through managers and agents, reported ETHR.'This is absolutely pathetic and the company increased working hours to 10, without increasing salary,' wrote one Reddit user.'Not just that, you have to complete 'WAM' that basically is an abusive tool which logs keystrokes. You have to maintain 9 hrs of those out of 10 now, or you get warning mails. 3-4 of such emails and they deduct your bonus and kill appraisals (sic),' the user added.The Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka government has allegedly moved to extend daily working hours in certain sectors, including IT, from 10 hours to 12 hours, a move met with resistance from several trade unions.As per Section 7 of the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1961, the working hours per day cannot exceed nine hours and the maximum hours of overtime cannot exceed 10 hours. The Act also puts an upper limit of 50 hours on overtime (OT) work for three months. Through the proposed changes, the government seeks to extend the maximum working hours to 10 hours a day and the maximum overtime to 12 hours a day. It also seeks to increase the overtime limit from 50 to 144 hours in three months, according to a Deccan Herald report.

In yet another day full of adjournments, the Lok Sabha passed the Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024 on Wednesday (August 6, 2025) after an extremely brief discussion. Introducing the Bill in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said, 'This Bill represents a decisive step towards positioning India as a global leader in maritime trade and governance. It is a progressive and advanced legislation, up to date with international maritime conventions and informed by the best practices of leading maritime nations.' 'The Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024, with 16 Parts and 325 clauses, modernises India's maritime legal framework by aligning with international conventions, enhancing safety at sea, improving emergency response, and ensuring environmental protection. It reduces compliance burdens, promotes Indian tonnage, and prioritises seafarer welfare and ship safety. The Bill aims to make India a globally respected maritime jurisdiction and unlock sustainable growth, investment, and innovation in the sector,' Mr. Sonowal added. The Bill introduces significant changes to India's maritime framework, using best practices of leading maritime jurisdictions like the U.K., Norway, and Singapore. It has reforms related to flexible vessel registration; easing ownership norms to attract foreign and NRI-led investment; enhanced safety and environmental standards aligned with international conventions to protect marine ecosystems; support for capital-deficient entrepreneurs and MSMEs through bareboat charter arrangements; expanded coastal security provisions in response to threats like 26/11; welfare measures for Indian seafarers, benefiting the 85% serving on foreign-flagged vessels; and a legal framework for maritime education to standardise over 160 training institutes across India. The Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024 is meant to be a progressive, future-ready legislation that replaces the Merchant Shipping Act of 1958. On the other hand, the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2024, was passed in the Rajya Sabha. It adopts the Hague-Visby Rules, a globally accepted maritime standard also followed by countries like the United Kingdom, and repeals the century-old Indian Carriage of Goods by Sea Act, 1925. The legislation is expected to simplify maritime trade laws, reduce litigation risks, and enhance transparency and commercial efficiency in cargo movement by sea. All through this, Opposition members continued to protest in both the Houses, demanding a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise undertaken by the Election Commission of India in Bihar. In the Lok Sabha, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the government is open to all discussions suggested by the Opposition, but since the SIR issue is sub judice in the Supreme Court and is also an exercise by the ECI which is an autonomous body, it cannot be taken up for discussion in Parliament. However, the latest upgrade in India's credit rating by S&P to BBB from BBB- and a possibility of trade negotiations to avoid high tariffs may prompt FPIs to change stance on Indian equities in the coming weeks. Residents unite, move Rera authority against builder after decade-long wait in Bengaluru
Bengaluru: After a decade-long wait for flats, Rera authority has adjudicated in favour of a group of homebuyers as the builder had failed to hand over possession of their units as promised. The Rera order directed the property developer of a Whitefield project to finish pending works, provide occupancy certificates (OCs), and compensate the home buyers for the delay, incomplete amenities, and broken assurances. The buyers had booked flats under pre-launch offers in 2014-15. The builder promised possession in 36-42 months, with an additional grace period of six months, putting the handover date around mid-2017. However, the deadline was revised multiple times and even then, the project remained incomplete. The buyers alleged that possession was given in phases only after prolonged pressure, and even then, basic infrastructure and promised amenities were missing. The residents also alleged deviations from the sanctioned plan, including changes in parking layouts and reduction of open spaces. They said some towers still had no OCs, forcing buyers to live in legal uncertainty. By 2022, after repeated verbal and written assurances by the builder failed to yield results, the residents formed an association to collectively fight the case. Pooling funds, they engaged a legal team and filed a complaint before the Rera authority. They supported their complaint with allotment letters, email trails, photographs, builder communications, and site inspection reports. In its defence, the builder denied deliberate delay and attributed setbacks to factors beyond his control, including labour shortages during Covid-19 pandemic, supply chain disruptions, changes in govt regulations, and cost escalations. He claimed most amenities were "substantially complete" and argued possession was offered in phases in good faith. He also denied any violation of the sanctioned plans. After hearing both sides, the Rera bench noted the builder had failed to meet the contractual possession date and that several key amenities and statutory compliances were still pending. The authority cited buyer testimonies and inspection findings to conclude the delay and incomplete works were attributable to the developer, not to unavoidable circumstances. In its July 21 order, the Rera authority directed the builder to complete all pending works within the fixed time frame specified, obtain and hand over occupancy certificates (OCs) for all towers, and compensate the allottees for the delay period, as calculated under the terms of the agreement and provisions of the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act. The association has now constituted a monitoring committee to track the builder's compliance with the Rera directions. Despite sending multiple letters and making repeated follow-ups, there was absolutely no response, leaving us with no choice but to approach the authorities."
