Just over an hour from London, nestled along Hove's serene seafront, Rockwater is far more than just a beachside restaurant—it's a fully-fledged destination for those in search of exceptional food, art, music and an atmosphere of easy-going coastal cool. While Brighton may steal the headlines with its bustle, Rockwater is a reminder that space to breathe and a light-filled interior can elevate a dining experience—and lunch on the roof terrace here proves the point.
The venue itself is a curated experience with interiors designed by Rockwater's founder and interior designer Ricci Tamagna. Pop Art and seaside-inspired pieces from Brighton's Helm Gallery line the walls, and you can't miss the specially commissioned seagull sculpture by Amber-Jane Raab, a playful homage to the coastal setting.
But the star of the show is the food—specifically, the new fish-forward lunch menu created by renowned chef James Golding, whose culinary pedigree includes Le Caprice and Soho House. Golding's approach is rooted in seasonality and locality, with a coastal theme that sings in every bite. His deep connection to local produce and suppliers is evident, making each dish feel like a love letter to the Sussex shoreline. Golding is Chair of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts Sustainability Committee and also works with the Table Talk Foundation helping children develop healthy relationships with food and cooking.

On a sunny afternoon, there are few better spots than Rockwater's roof terrace, where sea views stretch endlessly and the salt air enhances every mouthful. I began with Jersey Rock oysters, served ice-cold and briny-fresh—the perfect opening act. Next came the Atlantic prawn cocktail, a clever reimagining of the 1970s classic with plump, sweet prawns and a subtle kick of spice. For vegetarians, the New Forest asparagus is a standout: simply prepared, intensely fresh, and full of flavour.

Expect a generous selection of local seafood for mains and I went for the Dover sole with brown shrimps, shallots and parsley, which was delectable. Cooked to perfection and bathed in a golden butter, it was a dish that showcased both restraint and richness—something Golding clearly balances with ease. Adding to the experience are the interiors–decorated with a neutral, beach-inspired palette of sandy tones with hand-woven lampshades–and the great service from the team headed by the affable and infinitely knowledgeable General Manager Patryk Szymanski.

Beyond food, Rockwater thrives as a hub of arts, culture and wellness. Whether it's live music—spotlighting local and international talent—or unique experiences like sound baths and puppy yoga, there's always something happening that encourages connection and discovery. That ethos comes from founder Luke Davis, who launched Rockwater in 2020 with a vision of creating a collective community space. A highlight of Rockwater's cultural programme is the Summer Sunset Sessions on the Roof Terrace, where recent live sets have featured performances from Hove's local Superstar DJ Fatboy Slim.

With menus inspired by creatives like Margo in Margate, a fellow coastal artist, and a setting that at the height of summer feels more Côte d'Azur than English Channel, Rockwater is a destination that speaks to lovers of the sea, good food, and artistic inspiration. Highly recommended—and well worth the trip.

Ozzy Osbourne died of cardiac arrest, reports say

Ozzy Osbourne, heavy metal legend and former Black Sabbath frontman, died at 76 of a cardiac arrest. Known as 'The Prince of Darkness,' he sold over 100 million records and gained fame for his wild lifestyle, iconic music, and later as a reality TV star on The Osbournes. He is survived by his wife Sharon, five children, and several grandchildren. Ozzy Osbourne died of a cardiac arrest and had been suffering from Parkinson's and coronary artery disease, according to a death certificate filed in London. The death certificate was reportedly filed by his daughter, Aimee, The New York Times reports. According to the certificate published by The Sun he died of 'out of hospital cardiac arrest' and 'acute myocardial infarction.' Best known as the 1970s frontman of the legendary heavy metal band Black Sabbath, Osbourne made his mark on music history and popular culture. He famously earned notoriety for biting the head off a bat during a live performance and living a drug-fueled lifestyle before transforming into a beloved, albeit foul-mouthed, reality TV icon. Known to fans as The Prince of Darkness and the Godfather of Heavy Metal, Osbourne's musical legacy included Black Sabbath hits such as Paranoid, War Pigs, and 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' alongside a successful solo career, together selling over 100 million records worldwide. Following his death Osbourne's family issued a heartfelt statement: 'It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has died this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family's privacy at this time.' Osbourne was no stranger to controversy. He became a frequent target of criticism from conservative and religious groups that viewed his persona and music as a negative influence on youth. While acknowledging his past excesses, he firmly dismissed exaggerated rumours about being a devil-worshipper. As he shared in his 2010 biography: 'I've done some bad things in my time. But I ain't the devil. I'm just John Osbourne: a working-class kid from Aston who quit his job in the factory and went looking for a good time.' His reinvention later in life began in 2002 when he became the star of the US reality show The Osbournes. The show captured his daily life, as fans watched the ageing rock legend wander around his lavish home, share his thoughts in his distinctive Birmingham accent, and react to his family's unpredictable antics. The show gained him a new wave of adoring fans. Osbourne is survived by his wife and manager, Sharon, their five children—Jack, Kelly, Aimee, and two others, and several grandchildren. Osbourne was honoured with a funeral cortege through his hometown of Birmingham last week before a private family service.

Watch: Ralph Fiennes makes music amid WWI in 'The Choral'

Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Sony Pictures is previewing The Choral, a film starring Ralph Fiennes as a chorus master during World War I. The preview released Tuesday shows the Ramsden, Yorkshire Choral Society struggling to continue as many men leave to fulfill their "patriotic duty" in 1916. "They must also engage a new chorus master, and despite their suspicions that he has something to hide, their best bet seems to be Dr. Henry Guthrie (Fiennes) -- driven, uncompromising and recently returned from a career in Germany," an official synopsis reads. "As conscription papers start to arrive, the whole community discovers that the best response to the chaos that is laying waste to their lives is to make music together." Roger Allam, Mark Addy, Alun Armstrong, Robert Emms and Simon Russell Beale also star. Nicholas Hytner, well known for directing the 2015 film The Lady in the Van, also directs The Choral from a script penned by Alan Bennett. The Choral arrives in theaters around Christmas.

‘Role model' father who fell to his death at Oasis gig in Wembley named and pictured

A man who fell to his death during Oasis's Saturday night gig at Wembley has been named as Lee Claydon. The father from Bournemouth fell from the upper tier balcony of the London stadium during a sell-out concert by the Gallagher brothers. Describing him as a 'loving family man' who loved fishing and outdoor activities and a 'role model' to his son, Lee's brother Aaron Claydon said: 'We will miss him so very much.' Aaron paid tribute to his brother on a GoFundMe page set up to support Lee's partner, Amanda, and their family. In the post, he said Lee was 'the man I have always looked up to' who 'would have done anything for any of us'. 'Our family has been turned upside down and are struggling to deal with this devastation and unexpected loss,' Aaron wrote. 'Lee leaves behind his son, dad, partner, brothers, sisters, nephews and niece. 'Lee was a loving family man who was a role model to his son Harry and was loved so much by all his family. Lee would have done anything for any of us and he was taken from us far too soon and we will miss him so very much. 'Lee loved all outdoor activities, one of his favourite hobbies was fishing. He also loved music and his guitar. He also really enjoyed going to watch and support the boys and his nephew at their football games. 'Amanda and the boys have our full support at this very sad time, which is why we would love to be able to help them financially as well as emotionally. 'Please help us raise as much funds as we can to take one worry off Amanda and family right now as they are going through any family's worst nightmare.' Aaron also took to Facebook to pay tribute to his brother, writing: 'Still in shock and cannot believe I am writing this, but sadly over the weekend I lost by best mate the man I looked up to and the man I was lucky enough to call my brother Lee Claydon. 'This is gonna be a tough long journey and I have set up this GoFundMe page to help and support his loved ones. Please read and share. 'Until we meet again Rkid.' Lee's cousins, Shannon Gabrielle and Richard Norris, also paid tribute to Lee on the social media platform and shared the fundraiser. 'Absolutely shocked and gutted to hear about our cousin Lee Claydon,' Mr Norris wrote, describing the incident as 'heartbreaking beyond words'. 'Please consider supporting the fundraiser to help his loved ones during yet another incredibly difficult time,' he said. Shannon Gabrielle wrote Lee had died 'after no doubt having the time of his life at the Oasis concert this weekend'. She added his death had 'devastated the whole family' and said any donations would help support his 'closest knit' relatives. 'You just don't fathom you will go out for a night of amazing fun and not come home at the end of it,' she wrote. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Metropolitan Police said: 'A man – aged in his 40s – was found with injuries consistent with a fall. 'He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. 'The stadium was busy and we believe it is likely a number of people witnessed the incident, or may knowingly or unknowingly have caught it on mobile phone video footage. 'If you have any information that could help us to confirm what happened, please call 101.' The Gallagher brothers also said they had been left 'shocked and saddened' by the news of the death following their show. On Sunday, a spokesperson for Wembley said: 'Last night, Wembley Stadium medics, the London Ambulance Service and the police attended to a concert-goer who was found with injuries consistent with a fall. 'Despite their efforts, the fan very sadly died. Our thoughts go out to his family, who have been informed and are being supported by specially trained police officers. 'The police have asked anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.'
