SAN FRANCISCO — Golden State Valkyries guard Tiffany Hayes was helped off the court late in the second quarter of Wednesday night's game against the Mystics after taking an arm to the face from Washington's Shakira Austin and going down for several minutes in a scary scene.
Hayes went hard to the floor beneath the Washington basket 3:43 before halftime of the expansion franchise team's second game. She was down for several minutes after the hit to her head as at least a half-dozen medical personnel rushed out to tend to her.

Pirates beat Houston 3-0 as Mike Burrows shuts down Astros to pick up first win
Pittsburgh's Mike Burrows held Houston in check into the sixth inning to pick up the first victory of his career as a starter as the Pirates topped the Astros 3-0 on Wednesday night. Burrows (1-1), whose rise through the Pirates system was slowed by Tommy John surgery in 2023, allowed five hits and struck out six in 5 1/3 innings. Houston's biggest threat came in the sixth when a double by Pena and a walk to Jose Altuve put two on with one out. Pirates reliever Chase Shugart retired the next two hitters, with third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes making a nice play on a grounder by Yainer Diaz to end the threat. 11-13: Pittsburgh's record since Don Kelly replaced Derek Shelton as manager on May 8. The interleague series wraps up on Thursday. CHICAGO (AP) — Colt Keith hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the eighth inning to help the major league-leading Detroit Tigers beat the lowly Chicago White Sox 5-4 on a rainy Wednesday night. The Tigers regrouped after blowing a four-run lead and bounced back from an 8-1 pounding the previous day. Wenceel Pérez was ruled safe at second with a leadoff double to center against Brandon Eisert (2-1) in the eighth after a successful replay challenge by Detroit. He scored with one out on Colt Keith's bloop double down the left field line that landed just fair beyond a sliding left fielder Andrew Benintendi's glove, making it 5-4. Will Vest (5-0) pitched two scoreless innings, and Tommy Kahnle worked the ninth for his eighth save in 11 chances.
