Keith hits tiebreaking double in 8th as Tigers regroup to beat White Sox 5-4
CHICAGO (AP) — Colt Keith hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the eighth inning to help the major league-leading Detroit Tigers beat the lowly Chicago White Sox 5-4 on a rainy Wednesday night.
The Tigers regrouped after blowing a four-run lead and bounced back from an 8-1 pounding the previous day.
Wenceel Pérez was ruled safe at second with a leadoff double to center against Brandon Eisert (2-1) in the eighth after a successful replay challenge by Detroit. He scored with one out on Colt Keith's bloop double down the left field line that landed just fair beyond a sliding left fielder Andrew Benintendi's glove, making it 5-4.
Will Vest (5-0) pitched two scoreless innings, and Tommy Kahnle worked the ninth for his eighth save in 11 chances.
The Tigers tagged White Sox starter Jared Shuster for four runs in the first after a 95-minute delay. Riley Greene drove in two with a single and scored in the inning.
Chicago's Mike Tauchman hit an RBI double and scored in the third. Benintendi doubled leading off the fourth and came around when Josh Rojas chased Tigers starter Sawyer Gipson-Long with a sacrifice fly. Benintendi tied it at 4 in the fifth with a bases-loaded sac fly against Tyler Holton.
Gipson-Long lasted 3 2/3 innings in his first start in nearly two years, allowing three runs and five hits. The 27-year-old right-hander missed last season with elbow and hip injuries that required surgery.
Shuster, the opener in a bullpen game, gave up four runs and five hits in one inning.
Key momentBoth teams loaded the bases in the fifth. The Tigers came away empty-handed when Steven Wilson struck out Colt Keith. After Benintendi tied it in the bottom half, pinch hitter Austin Slater flied to center, ending the inning.

"Certainly, we want every person who comes into our arena -- whether player or fan -- to have a great experience. I appreciate the league doing that [investigation]. I appreciate that the Fever organization has been at the forefront of that." When it comes to MLB insiders, few are more plugged in than ESPN's Jeff Passan, who recently took a look at the entire landscape of the league, as we inch ever closer to the July 31 trade deadline. Officially, he has the Twins listed as 'holders', which means they won't be sellers… but their improved playoff position is unlikely to make them buyers either. What to know: The Twins were down bad after April and proceeded to win 13 consecutive games starting May 3. Following a streak-snapping loss, they ripped off three walk-off wins in a week. This is a team that, when healthy, has more than enough pitching and is perhaps a bat or two shy from giving Detroit a run for its money in the AL Central. But that's not the Twins' deadline style. Risk aversion is their modus operandi. Status quo is their state of play. Even if they're squarely in the playoff mix, they are not the sort of team that historically adds impact-type players at the deadline. So they need Byron Buxton and Carlos Correa to remain on the field and Royce Lewis to find himself and Matt Wallner to evolve into a middle-of-the-lineup force. External help beyond small additions here and there just isn't the Twins' way. Jeff Passan – ESPN It's a sad-but-true reality. Last year before the MLB trade deadline, the MN Twins were 59-48 and sitting just 1.5 games back of the division-leading Guardians. Instead of making manager Rocco Baldelli's life easier, with some legit deadline reinforcements, general manager Derek Falvey acquired Trevor Richards from the clearance rack. Richards went on to pitch in 10 games for the 2024 Twins, posting a 4.15 ERA, before he was designated for assignment. If the Pohlads weren't willing to help Falvey out last year, why would anyone expect them to do it this summer, especially when it currently looks like the 2025 Minnesota Twins will be in even worse position. Instead, they chose to keep him, since no trade partners were willing to offer anything for The Sheriff that could help their future outlook as a baseball team. Along with his trade deadline doubt in the Twins, he crowned Chris Paddack as the one player they could deal, should they decide to deal between now and July 31. Of course, that would be more of a selling move, being he has a 2.17 ERA in his last 10 outings (58.0 IP). There's still almost two months until the MLB trade deadline. If Chris Paddack is still pitching like he has been,he'd be one of the most valued assets on the market. Would that be enough for a competitive Minnesota Twins team to trade away a high-end starter they could use during a playoff run? Minnesota Twins No. 1 Prospect is Finally Back
The Minnesota Twins selected Walker Jenkins with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. In the two years since, he has blossomed into a consensus top 10 MLB prospect. Now 20 years old, Jenkins' biggest professional struggle so far is a familiar one around these parts. Staying healthy. Walker has been available for just two games this season, with his last action coming back on April 6, when he opened the regular season for Double-A Wichita. Unfortunately, an ankle injury that was first reported as a problem in Spring Training eventually landed him a cortisone shot and two months on the injured list. They have a doubleheader scheduled for today vs the FCL Rays. The first game is scheduled for 9 a.m. CDT this morning. This year, Jenkins will be more than four years younger than the average player age in the (Double-A) Texas League. Last summer was Walker Jenkins' first full professional season. The Minnesota Twins' prospect batted an impressive .282 with a .833 OPS across four levels, ending his 2024 minor league journey at Double-A Wichita, where he will eventually land when activated off the minor league injured list. When available, Minnesota Twins top prospect producing beyond his age Across 110 total minor league games to start his young professional career, Jenkins is slashing .299/.415/.471 with 27 doubles, 8 triples, and 9 home runs. He may eventually have to move off center field, but he's pretty damn good out there right now. On Monday, the MN Twins second-rated (and consensus MLB top 25) prospect Emmanuel Rodriguez hit the injured list for the Triple-A St. Paul Saints. That makes the news that Walker Jenkins' return even more welcomed. It's possible that Jenkins plays well enough to force the Twins into a promotion to Triple-A St. Paul, by the end of the this season. He has the talent and ability to make that a reality. But really, the most important thing is that he stays healthy and gains experience.
