Marquez wins Austrian GP for first time to extend MotoGP championship lead

Reuters15 hours ago
SPIELBERG, Austria, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Six-times MotoGP champion Marc Marquez marked the 1,000th premier class race in history by winning the Austrian Grand Prix for the first time in his career to take a mammoth 142-point lead over his brother Alex in the championship.
Having won Saturday's sprint from the second row, Marquez claimed the sprint-race double for the sixth Grand Prix in a row, with the Spaniard unbeaten since the British Grand Prix in May.
Not since 2014 had Marquez claimed six Grand Prix wins on the bounce as he inches closer to a seventh MotoGP crown with nine rounds left.
Gresini Racing rookie Fermin Aldeguer found late race pace to finish second while Aprilia's pole sitter Marco Bezzecchi, who kept Marquez at bay for as long as he could, finished third. Alex Marquez finished 10th after serving a long-lap penalty.
"Super, super happy to finally take the first victory here in Austria," Marquez said.
"I'm happy with six victories in a row, but (I need to) keep focus, next week we have another race."
Bezzecchi had claimed his first pole with Aprilia on Saturday and despite finishing fourth in the sprint, this time he had the perfect launch to lead Francesco Bagnaia and Marquez into turn one.
The two Ducatis went side by side on lap one when Marquez briefly overtook his teammate but Bagnaia did not relent and took the place back to stay in second.
However, Marquez made the same move on the next lap to take second and set his sights on Bezzecchi, waiting for the right opportunity to pounce.
"In the first part he (Bezzecchi) was super strong but then I just waited, I tried in the beginning but it was too risky, then I preferred to wait and attack in the end," Marquez added.
Alex Marquez had a poor start and with a long-lap penalty to serve for causing a crash at the Czech Grand Prix , the younger Marquez sibling fell out of the top 10 when he rejoined the field.
Bezzecchi soaked up the pressure but the Aprilia rider was unable to shake off the red Ducati hunting him down.
Bagnaia was struggling with his bike and he eventually began fading, giving way to KTM's Pedro Acosta and Aldeguer as the two youngsters fought for third.
Bagnaia had been undefeated in Austria for three years but he was a shadow of the ringmaster who had dominated at the Red Bull Ring since 2022 as he was bumped down to eighth.
Marquez finally attacked on lap 19 and squeezed past the Aprilia but Bezzecchi put his head down and took first place back from the Spaniard, eager to deny him a first victory at the Red Bull Ring.
But Marquez was on the ascendancy and he finally broke Bezzecchi's resistance on the next lap, using the Aprilia's slipstream to dive into turn one and take the lead.
As Bezzecchi made a futile attempt to reel Marquez in, Aldeguer then made a play for second place and the Gresini rookie made his move with five laps to go on turn one to slot in behind Marquez.
Marquez responded to the challenge and kept Aldeguer at bay to take the chequered flag but the rookie was over the moon with his best result in MotoGP.
"I'm super happy because at the end, Austria is not one of my favourite tracks like Le Mans," he said. "Making two podiums on bad tracks for me is incredible."

Forgotten Scotland striker Oli McBurnie capped off an excellent week with his new club Hull City by providing two assists and netting a stoppage-time winner in the Tigers' 3-2 Championship win over Oxford United. McBurnie signed for Hull City on a free transfer on August 6 after spending a year in Spain with Las Palmas, who were relegated from La Liga at the end of last season. He scored in the midweek EFL Cup defeat by Wrexham in his first start for the Humberside club and then dazzled in front of his new supporters at the MKM Stadium. He then put the gloss on a fine individual performance when he calmly found the bottom-left corner in second-half stoppage time. Oli McBurnie celebrates his winning goal for Hull. | Getty Images McBurnie agreed a contract with Hull until the summer of 2028 and his manager Sergej Jakirovic highlighted Oli McBurnie's 'experience and quality' after the Tigers built upon their opening-day 0-0 draw at Coventry City. 'That was his second goal in his second game and two assists, I think,' said Jakirovic. 'He was from the beginning our first wish (in the transfer window). He was not with us at the first weeks this summer, but he can run and knows the very league very well. 'He is massive for us. He has experience and quality and it's very promising for us.' Fellow Scot Kyle Joseph came on as a second-half substitute, while former Rangers man John Lundstram started. Capped 16 times by Scotland, McBurnie has not featured for the national team since he scored a penalty in the Euro 2020 play-off shoot-out triumph over Serbia four years ago. He missed out on the squad for the tournament and has been exiled ever since. McBurnie spoke last season of his desire to get back into the Scotland set-up and will hope that his form has caught the eye of national team head coach Steve Clarke, who is expected to name his squad for the September World Cup qualifiers against Denmark and Belarus after next weekend's fixtures. Dykes on target late for Birmingham One striker who also staked his claim for a place in the Scotland squad is Lyndon Dykes, who netted eight minutes into stoppage time for Birmingham City as they came back from a goal down to defeat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 at Ewood Park.

Sky Sports pundits split over Premier League title winner after predicting their top five - as Roy Keane names key to Liverpool retaining their title

insisted Liverpool will need to bring more players in if they are to retain their Premier League title this season. Following Arsenal 's win over Man United on Sunday, Keane and fellow Sky Sports pundits Micah Richards and Daniel Sturridge were tasked with giving their predictions for the 2025-26 campaign. The trio each selected a top five, but none could agree on which team will have their hands on the trophy come the end of May. In his predictions, Keane backed Mikel Arteta to finally get Arsenal over the hump and claim the title after three consecutive second-placed finishes. Keane then placed Liverpool second, followed by Man City and Newcastle, with Chelsea rounding out his top five. The usually unwavering Irishman qualified his prediction however, by noting that Liverpool will be able to make it two wins on the bounce if they are able to bolster their squad before the end of the transfer window. 'Depending on signings, if we're allowed to change our mind, I'm convinced that Liverpool can get another centre half then I would go with Liverpool,' Keane said on Sky Sports. The Reds have enjoyed a productive summer in the transfer market as Arne Slot looks to build on the success of his first year on Merseyside. Hugo Ekitike has already made an impact for the Reds alongside marquee arrival Florian Wirtz and the club are understood to be still pursuing a move for wantaway Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. As far as defensive reinforcements are concerned, the club have been repeatedly linked with a move for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi. Meanwhile former Man City defender Richards backed his boyhood club to return to the top of the mountain after a poor campaign by their standards last season. However, Keane insisted that he feels Pep Guardiola's side still time to get back to their best. 'I never usually bet against Pep and City,' Keane added. 'I just think maybe defensively, and I know that they've thrown James Trafford in there, and I think he's a really top goalkeeper but I just have that gut feeling that I think Arsenal might do it this year. 'But as I said, I think if Liverpool get a center half, and I would definitely change my mind on Liverpool. 'Even looking at Liverpool, sometimes when Liverpool aren't even added, or even City, when they're not at their best, they'll still score two or three goals.' Sturridge joined Richards in claiming one of his former clubs will go all the way, as the ex-Liverpool striker claimed the Reds have what it takes. Like Keane though, the 35-year-old claimed that the club would benefit from bolstering their squad depth. '[Liverpool] a strong squad, but I do think they need maybe one or two additions to strengthen up.' Sturridge said. 'I think they need a defender, and, of course, one more attacker. They're a little bit short in both of those areas.'

'I want to be one of the best players in the world,' says loan star Mikey Moore as Jayden Meghoma joins him at Rangers

Mikey Moore insists he sees his season-long loan at Rangers as a platform to help him become one of the best players in world football. The 18-year-old winger signed a new long-term contract at Tottenham Hotspur shortly after agreeing his move across the border and made his debut for the Ibrox outfit in their 4-2 home win over Alloa in the Premier Sports Cup. Moore started brightly, setting up Nedim Bajrami for the opening goal, and showed flashes of his ability before being replaced by Thelo Aasgaard on 69 minutes. He promises there is far more to come, though, and has set his sights high when addressing how big an incentive it is to show he can go on to become a bona-fide English Premier League player. 'It's massive for me,' said Moore, who has been joined at Rangers by his England Under-19 team-mate Jayden Meghoma after he completed a loan move from Brentford. 'I want to go and play in the biggest competitions and I want to be one of the best players in the world, hopefully. 'I've signed a new contract at Spurs, but, at the minute, I'm focused on playing here. I'm just buzzing to go and play some massive games at this football club. 'I want to become a better player here and I think there are massive opportunities. 'I just want to play as many games as possible, score as many goals and excite as many people as I can.' And Moore is clear that he would like the chance to star in Tuesday's Champions League qualifying play-off first leg against Belgians Club Brugge. 'It's a massive game, as every game is when you play for Rangers,' he said. 'I'm excited for it. 'I saw some of the games in the earlier rounds and it's been good to qualify, so it's a massive opportunity for me and all the boys. I can't wait.' Moore made five outings for Spurs in the group stage of the Europa League last season, but missed out on the 1-1 group stage draw with Rangers at Ibrox because of illness. He then watched from the bench as the London club went on to win the tournament under former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou. He hopes those experiences under his belt will help him kick on in UEFA competition for Rangers this term. 'It was a really good season in Europe for me and for the team, so I've had some good experiences and I'm ready to go and show more,' he said. 'I want to go and make more of an impact on a European stage.' Meanwhile, new arrival Meghoma declared himself 'hungry and excited' to get going at Ibrox after being reunited with manager Russell Martin. The 19-year-old left-back has joined Rangers on loan in a deal which paves the way for Jefte to complete an anticipated move back to Brazil to sign for Palmeiras. Meghoma made his first-team debut for Southampton under Martin, making four cup appearances in all before signing for Brentford last summer. He has also made four appearances for the Bees and spent the second half of last season on loan at Preston. He told the Rangers website: 'I am very excited to be here, it is a fantastic club and I know a lot about the rich history of Rangers. 'When the deal was presented to me, I thought straight away that it would be a fantastic opportunity for myself and my family. 'The main thing for me is getting results. Rangers is a big club and I am ready, I am hungry and excited to get going.' Ibrox head coach Martin added: 'I am really pleased to welcome Jayden to Rangers. I have worked with him before and I know exactly what he brings. He is a young player with big potential, real athleticism and a great attitude. 'He is hungry to learn and improve and I'm confident he'll thrive in this environment. We're excited to help him take the next step in his career here at Ibrox.'
