Cult classic Shenmue named most influential game of all time in Bafta poll
Action adventure game Shenmue, which first launched in 1999, has been named the most influential game of all time in a public poll run by Bafta.
The game, which launched on the Sega Dreamcast, beat high-profile titles including Grand Theft Auto, Super Mario Bros and Minecraft to receive the most votes.
It tells the story of Ryo Hazuki's quest to avenge his father's death, and is considered a pioneer in open-world gameplay and for popularising the use of quick time events – where players have to perform specific actions on their controller within a set time limit when prompted.
Shenmue topped the poll ahead of first-person shooter Doom, Super Mario Bros, Half-Life and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
The top ten was completed by Minecraft, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Super Mario 64, Half-Life 2 and The Sims.
Other hugely popular and industry-defining titles including Tetris, Tomb Raider, Pong and Grand Theft Auto were also named among the top 21 games in the poll.
Luke Hebblethwaite, head of games at Bafta, said: 'In the run-up to these results, we've been thrilled to see the community of both game makers and fans come together to share stories and champion the games that they see as having tremendous influence, creating a vibrant, positive celebration and conversation about some of the very best games our industry has ever produced.
'Games are an immensely innovative force and it's brilliant to recognise those titles which have truly shaped the course of our medium.
'We hope that these results provide a fresh appreciation of the impact of the winning games and inspire us all to continue to celebrate the most influential titles of the medium we all love.'
Yu Suzuki, creator of the Shenmue franchise, said: 'I am deeply honoured and grateful that Shenmue has been selected as the most influential video game of all time.
'At its inception, we set out to explore the question – 'How real can a game become?' – aiming to portray a world and story unprecedented in scale and detail. This distinction serves as a powerful reminder that the challenge we embraced continues to resonate with and inspire so many people even today. It is truly the greatest of encouragement.

The announcement of the poll results come ahead of the 21st Bafta Game Awards, which take place on Tuesday April 8.

‘Mr. Loverman' Is a Rich, Stylish and Riveting Mini-Series
Lennie James recently won a BAFTA for his leading role in the mini-series 'Mr. Loverman,' and for good reason: His performance is as whole and mesmerizing a portrait as one sees on television. 'Loverman,' arriving Wednesday, on BritBox, is based on the novel by Bernardine Evaristo and follows Barrington Jedidiah Walker (James), an Antiguan native who has been living in London for decades. He is a self-described 'man of property, man of style,' a dapper dresser and a Shakespeare enthusiast, husband to a devout Christian woman, father to two adult daughters and grandfather to a teen boy. He is also closeted. His long-term partner, Morris (Ariyon Bakare, who also won a BAFTA for his work here and is also fantastic), has been his best friend and lover since they met in Antigua as young men; he is Uncle Morris to Barry's children, a constant presence, a secret and not a secret, a betrayal but also a devotion. But Barry balks at labels, and he says he isn't a homosexual but rather 'a Barry sexual.' Barry swears he is about to leave his wife, about to tell her the truth. But he has sworn that before. The show weaves among the characters' perspectives, and long flashbacks depict the pivotal moments that carve each person's reality. We hear their internal monologues, though none sing quite as melodically as Barry's does. 'Loverman' is polished and literary, practically silky — sublime, even. It's natural to be baffled by other people's choices: Why would you do that? Why didn't you say anything? Why would you stay? Why would you leave? A lot of contemporary shows — even plenty of good ones — fall back on pat just-so stories for their characters' backgrounds, but the picture here is deeper and fuller than that. Fear and pain, love and loyalty: They're never just one thing. There are eight half-hour episodes of 'Mr. Loverman.' I couldn't resist bingeing it, not because it's so propulsive, per se, but because it's so lovely.

Warrington star Owen Cooper wins major award at star-studded ceremony
WARRINGTON actor, Owen Cooper has won his first major award following his outstanding debut in Netflix's smash hit, Adolescence. The teenager, who lives in Orford, burst onto the scene in his debut performance as Jamie Miller in the streaming series. Adolescence, which is a four-part drama, follows the story of 13-year-old Jamie who is arrested on suspicion of murder. Katie Leonard, Jamie's classmate, was stabbed to death in a car park and the 13-year-old is the prime suspect. The series was filmed entirely in one shot – meaning that each episode was acted out by the cast from start to finish with no cuts, like a play. Owen made his acting debut in the series (Image: Netflix) The role of Jamie was the now 15-year-old's acting debut, and his performance prompted calls for his remarkable performance to earn him an award nomination. While the release of the series just missed the cut off for BAFTA nominations, Owen was eligible for the inaugural Gotham TV Awards. He was nominated alongside his castmate, Erin Doherty, for Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Limited Series. The award ceremony was held in New York City yesterday, Monday, and the teen attended alongside his co-stars. Owen received the award at the star-studded ceremony and made sure to thank his parents for 'creating' him, as well as the cast and crew. The teenager made sure to thank his co-star, Erin Doherty, in his speech 'Main person that I have to thank is Erin, who is also nominated for this award. 'That episode that we did together, it was easy to do it with you, and it was such an honour to share this, share this award with you. 'I also want to thank Philip Barantini, Joe Johnson, Stephen Graham and I want to thank Hannah Walters. I just want to thank everyone that was part of the Adolescence cast and crew, everyone that was there.' The series also picked up the award for Breakthrough Limited Series and Stephen Graham received the award for Outstanding Lead Performance in a Limited Series. Owen is currently the favourite to be nominated for and win an Emmy for his breathtaking performance in the series. If he wins, he will be the youngest male recipient in the award ceremonies history. Nominations will be announced on July 15.
