Michael Kay reached out to Don Mattingly to quell Blue Jays controversy

Michael Kay does not believe he was insulting the Blue Jays when he said they were 'not a first-place team.' But because of the controversy his comments sparked, which included a back-and-forth with Sportsnet broadcaster Jamie Campbell, Kay, the voice of the Yankees on YES Network, reached out to Yankee great and current Blue Jays bench coach Don Mattingly to relay a message to Toronto manager John Schneider. Advertisement Kay insists he was complimenting the Jays for outplaying their run differential and credited Schneider for that. 'I just reached out to Donnie, I said, 'Can you tell Schneider what I meant?' and then Donnie actually told Schneider and Schneider contacted me,' Kay told the Toronto Star before Tuesday's Yankees-Blue Jays game. 'We had a text exchange and he said, 'I totally understand, you don't have to clarify anything, I know exactly what you mean.' 'People don't want to believe it, they think I'm backtracking when I'm not.' Michael Kay AP Advertisement The Blue Jays swept a four-game series against the Yankees in Toronto from June 30-July 3 and just took the rubber game of a three-game series Wednesday night. Toronto, whose run differential is +32, leads the Yankees, whose run differential is +106, by four games in the AL East. 'Maybe I articulated it poorly,' Kay told the Star, 'but I was talking about run differential, where they have exceeded their run differential. And in the same sentence, I said the Yankees' run differential is much better and they have underperformed.' Advertisement After the four-game sweep, Campbell took a playful jab at Kay on the Sportsnet postgame show while holding and tossing a broom. 'I can think of a certain Yankee broadcaster, in fact, who is gonna have to go on his show [Friday] and admit that the Blue Jays are a first-place team,' Campbell said. Advertisement 'What I would say to Jamie is I can easily say the Blue Jays are a first-place team because I'm not a fawning fanboy. I'm a broadcaster,' Kay said. 'And the bottom line is they are, in fact, a first-place team. 'Imagine if (YES Network studio analyst) Jack Curry was waving a broom on the Yankees postgame show,' Kay said. 'He would probably be called into the office and shortly fired after that. 'Now, I love Toronto. It is a cosmopolitan city. It is one of the greatest cities in the world, for me. You're waving a broom on a postgame show, you are turning it into Mayberry RFD. I just don't get it. I don't understand it. You should be proud of the fact you are in first place. 'And one final thing: You shouldn't hang on the rim three minutes into the third quarter of a basketball game. Feel good about sweeping the Yankees. Feel good about winning all these games in a row. Feel good about being in first place. But to hang on the rim this early? Let's hang on the rim in October. That's when you hang on the rim.' Kay then delved into why he couldn't help but return fire at Campbell during an appearance on The Post's 'The Show with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman' podcast. Don Mattingly AP 'I always find myself in these situations and I'm damaged,' Kay said. 'I wish I didn't act like this. I wish I didn't have to react, but you know, I know you (Sherman) come from the same sort of humble beginnings as I do and there's a lot of street in us and we want to fight back, especially when we feel that we were wronged. 'I am a damaged freak. I wish that I could simply be a guy who does the game and just [doesn't] have Met fans coming at me and Blue Jay fans now … It wears on you, it really does.'

Aaron Boone 'Losing Grip' as Yankees Melt Down in Toronto; 'Close to Dead Day'

The New York Yankees added to their error total on the season Wednesday, with four by four different fielders — including one by pitcher Max Fried and another by Ben Rice in just his 20th appearance at first base — in an 8-4 loss to the first-place Toronto Blue Jays. The defensive meltdown, which also included a botched fly ball by right fielder Cody Bellinger that was not ruled an error but led to a standup triple for Toronto's Ernie Clement, left the Yankees four games off the American League East pace. The game also featured the fourth ejection of the season for Manager Aaron Boone, leading one Yankee observer to worry that "Boone keeps losing his grip." "Still, they should do it soon for Boone's sake. He seems like he's reaching his breaking point." During his regular appearance on the "Talkin' Yanks" podcast Tuesday, Boone grew "clearly agitated," Yardbarker reporter Adam Gretz noted, and went into a "rant." The trigger came when the Yankees skipper was asked whether his players have been overly controlled and unemotional when commenting on the misplays and painful losses that have plagued the team over that past several weeks. "I don't care what you want," Boone snapped. "These are answers of pestering, everyday questions. I want our guys in a good like, boom. We are locked in, when it's (expletive) and when it's really good, and all in between." A Ben Rice fielding error leads to another run for the #BlueJays. The loss was the third in the Yankees' last five games. The Yankees have played at a sluggish 21-26 pace since they held a seven-game lead in the American League East on May 28. "Boone is awful and needs to be canned. Sure, suggest I'm being dramatic, but the truth is I'm right," Casey wrote on Thursday. "Bad leaders destroy a franchise. Google it." Casey has been especially critical of Boone's support shown toward shortstop Anthony Volpe, who is tied with the San Francisco Giants' Willy Adames for the MLB lead among shortstops for most errors with 13. More MLB: Yankees' Anthony Volpe Enters 'Death Spiral' as Offense Collapses "Volpe could boot three ground balls and strike out looking twice, and Boone would still run out like a helicopter parent screaming at the ump for hurting his 'special boy's' feelings," Casey wrote. "It's not just cringe -- it's deeply weird. A grown man managing a professional baseball team should not act like he's defending his son in tee-ball." The Yankees as a team are now tied for eighth overall in MLB with 53 errors. "I've been calling for Boone's firing since Aaron Judge had baby cheeks. And at long last, baseball insiders are starting to see what I've been yelling about," Casey concluded. "We're getting close to Boone's dead day." After an off day Thursday, the Bronx Bombers face another tough assignment when they host the Philadelphia Phillies for a three-game set at Yankee Stadium. Orioles closer Félix Bautista placed on injured list with right shoulder discomfort

CLEVELAND — Baltimore Orioles closer Félix Bautista, who is tied for sixth in the American League with 19 saves, was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday with right shoulder discomfort. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said the right-hander felt uncomfortable while stretching in the bullpen Wednesday during a 3-2 loss to the Cleveland Guardians. Bautista will undergo an MRI when the Orioles return home Friday. 'The (dugout) phone rang in the seventh inning last night and I thought, 'That is not good,'' Mansolino said. 'Then I heard it get slammed down and knew it wasn't good. 'Félix had started his process of getting loose and that's when it flared up.' Bautista did not pitch in the first three games of the series in Cleveland, last seeing action on Sunday at Tampa Bay when he earned his 19th save in 20 opportunities. He missed the entire 2024 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. The 30-year-old Dominican has a 1-1 record and 2.60 ERA in 35 appearances, limiting opponents to a .134 batting average over 34 2/3 innings. Bautista has struck out 50 and walked 23. 'We just have to hope it's not too serious,' Mansolino said. The Orioles will use a closer-by-committee in the short term with righty setup men Seranthony Domínguez and Yennier Cano at the front of the line. 'We're going to have to bump up their roles,' Mansolino said. 'We'll figure it out.' Bautista will not enter free agency until 2028, but is eligible for arbitration following this season. The 6-foot-8, 285-pounder is in the final year of a two-year, $2 million contract. With the Orioles out of wild-card contention, they are expected to be active sellers before the July 31 trade deadline. ___ AP MLB:
