
Charles Sandison Illuminates The Oracle With AI

Finland-based British artist Charles Sandison doesn't just work with light and language – he composes with code. Long before digital art became fashionable, he was programming a Sinclair ZX81 computer in the remote north of Scotland in the early '80s, teaching himself to code at age 12, while drawing and painting as his primary way of expressing himself. At a time when computers were alien to most households and new media was scarcely taught in art schools, Sandison forged his own hybrid language of software and symbolism. His breakthrough came in 2001 at the Venice Biennale, and since then, his computer-generated video projections have illuminated the Catacombs of Paris, the facade of the Oslo Opera House and museums across the world.
Sandison's latest – and perhaps most profound – work, 'The Garden of Pythia', is nestled on the ancient slopes of Delphi, Greece, at Pi, Global Center for Circular Economy and Culture. Commissioned by the Polygreen Culture & Art Initiative (PCAI), an organization merging culture and ecology founded by Greek entrepreneur Athanasios Polychronopoulos, the installation draws a poetic parallel between today's artificial intelligence and the 8th-century B.C. Oracle of Delphi known as Pythia. Powered by AI-driven code and projected onto the hillside, the work pulses with ancient texts, fragments of Delphic statues, digital symbols and environmental data. For Sandison, it marks his deepest engagement yet with AI, blending myth, code and memory into a living landscape.

You originally planned to move to Berlin. How did you end up in Finland instead?
I studied at the Glasgow School of Art in the late '80s and early '90s, and even taught there briefly. In 1995, I was planning to move to Berlin to set up a studio. I felt I'd been in Glasgow long enough and wanted to see what life in Berlin might offer. On the way, I had a short detour for an exhibition in Finland – just two weeks, I thought. That was 30 years ago. I'm still there. I guess I'm someone drawn to northern places. Wherever you find a 'north', give a shout – Charles will probably be up a mountain somewhere, messing about with projectors and code. That's my thing.
What was your early relationship with technology like?
I grew up in a remote part of northern Scotland. My parents were a bit hippie-ish and believed isolation was good for the soul. If it doesn't drive you mad, you find ways to occupy yourself. In the early '80s, home microcomputers – 8-bit machines – started appearing. My best friend from age 12 until I left for art school was a little Sinclair ZX81. I taught myself to code. At the same time, I was always drawing and painting. Those were my first ways of speaking to the world.
How did you connect art and code as one language?
It was around that time a light bulb went off in my head: painting, drawing and writing computer code – they're the same thing to me. That realization shaped my artistic practice for years.
What made you shift from museum installations to more site-specific, outdoor work?
My early installations were mostly in 'white cube' galleries. But after years of traveling and installing work in the same kind of museum spaces, I realized I wasn't that interested in those interiors. I began making peripheral works – sketches of a kind, using light and code – in sites around the world. In Rome, for example, while installing work at the MAXXI Museum, I asked to access the Farnese Gardens by night so I could experiment with projections. If you work with digital art, you can't just pull out a sketchbook. You have to invent new ways to sketch using light and code. I've done that in the Catacombs of Paris, on the mountainside outside Seoul, and very quickly, those peripheral works became more interesting to me than the museum shows.

How did 'The Garden of Pythia' come about?
The project really began in 2020 with a show at Bernier/Eliades in Athens – right in a small window between lockdowns. One of the very few people who saw it was Athanasios Polychronopoulos. He came up to me and said, 'I've got a place I think you'd be interested in.' And that was the beginning. We kept talking over the years, ping-ponging ideas, until we finally got to the business of installing the work here. Being in Delphi feels natural to me. It reminds me of the small, remote communities I grew up in – places where the past and present collide, where survival is pragmatic, but history lives in the landscape.
What was it like working on-site at Delphi?
I can only work at night. My installations don't come alive until the sun goes down. So over the last few visits, I've spent my nights up on the hillside, just me, computers, code and light. My wife said it looked like Frankenstein's mountain lab – sparks flashing in the dark. But it's in those moments, alone in the landscape, that everything connects. That's when the work really happens.
You've spoken about using AI in your work. How do you see your role as an artist engaging with such advanced technologies?
I'm not evangelistic about AI. I don't think every artist needs to use it. But I happen to have been born at a time with a certain skill set that lets me dive deep into the mechanics of AI and computer code. If you have that ability as an artist, I think it's important to engage with it, understand it and even shape it. I've visited places like Google Labs in London and spoken with engineers – people building this landscape. Most of the public doesn't really know what AI is or how it works. I feel like my role isn't to explain it technically, but to act as an intermediary. I'm not giving an education – I'm offering an experience. For me, it's like a transfer of experience, similar to how a painting silently communicates in a museum. That's what I try to do with AI in my work. And really, the model of AI is much older than we think. It began in places like the Temple of Apollo with the Oracle of Delphi. Pilgrims would come from all over the known world, bringing questions: Should we marry? Go to war? They'd climb the hill, present their offerings and receive a cryptic answer from behind a screen. That was a kind of machine intelligence too – a biomythic one, but artificial nonetheless. It's fascinating how that structure echoes in the way we interact with AI today.

Annecy Animation Festival is filled with unmissable events, ranging from global premieres to niche boutique screenings. Near or at the top of that list are the MIFA Pitches, showcasing what indie directors and producers from all over the world have planned for the future of animation. An event carefully monitored by nearly every Annecy attendee, the sessions have more often than not proven to be the birthplace of true animated gems. In the Feature Films category, twelve film projects were selected this year at MIFA from no less than 201 candidates. Pitching at MIFA, where teams have ten minutes to dazzle potential partners, distributors, investors, sales agents and broadcasters alike, can prove tremendously valuable for such projects. Michel Ocelot's 1998 groundbreaking feature 'Kirikou and the Sorceress' was pitched at MIFA in 1991, while 'Heirloom,' an Indian feature presented last year in the same event, is now part of the Work-in-progress session, backed by a German co-producer. Last but not least, a Latvian cat created by indie director turned Oscar-winner Gints Zilbalodis was presented at the MIFA pitches back in 2021. Four years later, 'Flow' wrote a new chapter in European animation history. Here are our picks for five projects that stood out from this year's selection. What if children's animation was crafted by the children themselves? This idea drove director Filip Mašek to create 'Acorn's Adventure,' a smashingly beautiful CG project with forest characters designed by the daring imaginations of nature-loving children. Quido, a boy made of acorns, appears in Resinland, a village hidden deep in the forest where everyone seems to have a predefined purpose except for him. Suddenly, the village 's vital resource, resin, comes under attack from an unknown ring of thieves. So, Quido declares himself the hero and sets off on an epic mission to save the village along with daredevil race-driver wannabe Mary. Quirky characters such as posh champagne-cork Mayor or chestnut odd-looking villagers populate the luscious project, which has been built so far under the careful scrutiny of — you guessed it — children. 'This story is about acceptance and finding who you are', explained Mašek. As a teenager and Boy Scout leader, he was always amazed to see what stories children could create with twigs and acorns. Bringing this story to life with the same elements and the same energy resonated with him as well as Annecy's audience. Using Unreal Engine and Blender technology mixed with cutting-edge photogrammetry and motion-capture, the Czech-German co-production brings a teaser to Annecy, along with a second draft of the script. The project is looking for co-producers, broadcasters, investors and sales opportunities. Co-producer Kristina Husová concluded that their main goal was to foster this creativity and imagination. 'Our main wish is that children will run from the screening straight to the forest and use their limitless imagination to create their own 'Acorn's Adventures.' Annie/Emmy-nominated Shofela Coker ('Kizazi Moto: Moremi') and Nadia Darries ('Star Wars Visions: Aau's Song') dazzled Annecy's audience of professionals with 'Mami Wata,' a South-African 2D-CG hybrid animated feature film bringing forth the West African folk tale of Mami Wata. When the ancient water goddess threatens her town, Roukia, a silenced musician, must reclaim her voice to break a generational curse and save herself and her family. Describing their project as a 'thriller and a classic monster tale with a love story at its heart,' directors Coker and Darries blend their experience working in high-end environments with Nigerian and Southwestern African visual style to create what promises to be a gripping feature. Music, a key element within their project, will take the viewers from afro-beats to traditional Nigerian music, from afro-funk to modern dance. As a musical storyteller, Roukia focuses on the healing capacity of music and dance. 'Crocodile Dance' is currently in development and comes to Annecy looking for gap financing, co-producers, sales and distribution. Impressive character design and powerful animatics show true expertise of the directors' duo backed by South African Lucan Studio and Nigerian Coker Coop. Concluding their pitch, directors Coker and Darries emphasized Roukia's path to understanding her fear will be key in this narrative. 'Rather than slay the dragon with sword, fear and might, one might instead move like water and learn to dance with it, for fear does not trouble the sea.' Belgian veteran production company Vivi Film ('Les Triplettes de Belleville,' 'The Secret of Kells,' 'Titina') and Brussels-based Studio Souza presented 'Dreamwalker.' The project, which had already been showcased at Cartoon Movie, Europe's biggest co-production forum for animated films, follows Lucy, a lively 11-year-old girl who loves skating, water ballet and hanging out with her best friends. Everything changes when she starts suffering from a rare sleep disorder called narcolepsy. To prevent accidents from happening, her parents become very protective, limiting her freedom. As her condition turns even the simplest of everyday actions into a painful challenge, she starts to grow apart from her friends while trying to figure out who the mysterious nameless boy is who keeps appearing to her in her dreams. The teams' expertise shines in this lush 2d animated project, of which Director Rudi Mertens and producer Veerle Appelmans unveiled a teaser and dashing animation tests. In this heartfelt story about friendship, Lucy will learn to embrace her condition and find new meaning. With a finalized script, rough pre-boards, beautiful character designs and striking backgrounds, the production has already received development grants from Flanders Audiovisual Fund. Again relying on their teams' solid knowledge of the European animation landscape, Vivi Film has detailed plans to share for a 3-country co-production scheme and is looking for partners, international sales agents and distributors. Miyu Productions — which boasts two films in Annecy's feature competition this year, 'Death Does Not Exist' and 'Dandelion's Odyssey' — returns to MIFA pitches with Simon Rouby's second feature. Nine years after his directorial debut film 'Adama' won two prizes at Annecy, Rouby presented, with producer and long-time friend Emmanuel-Alain Raynal, a CG project aimed at family audiences, which Rouby described as 'Red Riding Hood in the Himalayas.' An idea that has followed him since he had to retell his own version of the known folk tale as part of his Gobelins/CalArts training, Rouby was lucky enough to accompany a geological expedition in the famed mountain range. 'Where I would just see rocks, those geologists saw a story,' explained Rouby, recalling a trip that allowed him to infuse his story with realism, capturing the essence of those rocky landscapes and remote villages. 'Pangea' tells the story of Chesa, a young girl who can predict earthquakes. After one of them weakens her village, she leaves to seek help from her grandmother, who lives as a hermit in the mountains. As she searches for the origins of her power, Chesa discovers that the earth is shaking because of the Dark Teeth, a landless people who feed on anthracite. Driven by their ever-increasing hunger, they dig into the earth and accelerate continental drift, threatening the world Chesa and her grandmother are striving to protect. Rouby's and Miyu's expertise combine in what appears as a solid project, with impressive visuals and a striking teaser that ravished Annecy's audience. The project, already backed up by the CNC and several regional funds for its development, is looking for additional partners. 'The Sunken Knight' opened the day's second pitching session with an animated bang. In a medieval village where children are forbidden to go near the sea, 10-year-old Anna forms an unlikely duo with her whimsical, mysterious grandmother. Together, they venture deep under the ocean to retrieve Anna's no-good younger brother Malo, kidnapped by the terrible Sunken Knight. Along the way, the duo will uncover the secrets of the lost city of Ys, a mysteriously submerged town somehow connected to Anna's past. Visual artist and comic book author Sébastien Cosset helms this promising French project backed by L'Incroyable Studio ('Bergères Guerrières,' 'Draw for Change'). A feature that can also count on talents such as acclaimed French screenwriter Fabien Velhmann, artistic duo Kerascoët ('Tobie Lolness') and both cute and funny animatics created by Oscar-nominated director Benjamin Renner, who also storyboards the project. An adventure-filled project with a strong visual identity and dazzling concept art, 'The Sunken Knight' amazed Annecy's audience with its distinct palette and lovable characters. The duo of Anna and her grandmother forms a perfect balance between the old woman's quirkiness and the young girl's down-to-earth approach. In bringing the viewers into the depths of the Atlantic Ocean, the team also manages to underline how important it is to preserve marine life today. A definite highlight of this year's roundup, 'The Sunken Knight' already has a full treatment and is looking for co-producers, distributors and broadcasters to board this one-of-a-kind project. Selecting five projects from the twelve features proved extremely difficult, as each had its own specific identity. All the films' primary information remains available on Annecy's website, and we encourage investors, broadcasters, and producers to dive deeper into this year's powerful line-up. Estonian Puppet and Stop-Motion Animation ‘May Not Be Mainstream, but It's Still Thriving'
Fashions come and go, but Estonia is still betting on puppet and stop-motion animation. 'It may not be mainstream anymore, but Estonian stop-motion is still thriving, with many directors choosing it as their main style. It's taught in the Estonian Academy of Arts on a very high level, so future generations could also fall in love with the technique and preserve it in their art,' says Rebel Frame producer Kadriann Kibus. 'My plan was to come to Estonia to study puppet animation, because it has wonderful traditions. I wanted to learn from Anu Laura Tuttelberg ['Winter in the Rainforest'] and Ülo Pikkov ['Body Memory'],' says the Armenia-born director. In the film, she talks about Russian emigration following the invasion of Ukraine, combining documentary and road movie. While her chosen technique is that of puppet animation mixed with embroidery and fabric manipulation, 'materials are sometimes sewn accurately and sometimes more roughly to emphasize the meaning of each scene.' As a minority co-producer, Rebel Frame is also working with Lithuanian studio Akis Bado on puppet film 'Glass Elephants.' 'One of our studio founders and owners, Sergo Kibus, used to work for a decade in Nukufilm before we established our own studio,' explains Kadriann Kibus. While Nukufilm works in stop-motion technique, newer establishments also picked up the technique, she notes. 'There's also a separate niche, stop-motion cut-out, that's popular in Estonia.' While the country is ready to celebrate the 100th birthday of Heino Pars, one of the founding fathers of the Estonian puppet animation, Nukufilm – established in 1957 – will be turning 68 this winter. 'All that time, we've done different kinds of stop-motion films for different audiences – both for children and adults,' says producer Kerdi Oengo. Among the company's award winners, 'The Master' by Riho Unt was noticed at Annecy and 'Dog Apartment' by Priit Tender was shortlisted for the Academy Award only last year. Current films are made in the style of 'classical puppet [animation], although the artistic style of each film is very different.' 'We have just released one film, another will be released later this year, we have three in production and two in the development stage. We can say that the overall situation in animation in Estonia is good. Mari Kivi has just completed her debut, and Jonas Taul is finishing his second short.' Kivi's 'Eating Time' sees a woman literally eating her way through time, triggering a time shift. Taul's 'A Serious Thought' follows a boy pondering his place in the universe as he goes to bed. But if Earth is just a 'tiny marble floating in space,' does his existence matter? Nukufilm is also overseeing 'The Big Other' by Andres Tenusaar, Kalju Kivi's 'My Friend the Cucumber' and a co-production with Latvia: 'Nesting' by Anna Zača. According to Oengo, the industry is bound to see more and more co-productions due to lack of sufficient financing from one country. 'Stop-motion is more expensive in comparison with computer-made films, and co-production is also trickier. Since there are actual puppets and sets, a major part of the film can't be done online. It's a problem, and a struggle, to establish a smooth workflow, it includes more travelling and more understanding from financiers. But we're trying to survive in an unstable world.' Producer Edina Csüllög agrees: 'Greater emphasis on co-productions would be beneficial.' Csüllög's recent films, 'The Shadow of Dawn' and 'Flow of Being,' the latter combining stop-motion, sand animation, cut-out and 2D, have already hit the festival circuit. There's a strong pool of talented animators in Estonia – but not enough opportunities. 'I work with numerous foreign colleagues who chose to stay in Estonia as animation directors or creators, but it's often nearly impossible for them to access local funding to complete their projects. It's a pity, as there is a wealth of talent, and many come from countries where animation funding is limited or non-existent.' Erik Heinsalu (Grafik) is producing stop-motion short 'Uka-uka,' to be released in 2026, which will mark Henri Veermäe's debut. 'In Estonia's animation scene, films are often made thanks to the passion and dedication of professional enthusiasts. However, funding remains limited. This means we must be very creative throughout the production process,' he says. 'Uka-uka' is a dark comedy set in the early 2000's Estonian countryside. 'This duality of old and new will be reflected in the techniques and materials used in the film – for example, we intend to use old Soviet camera lenses. The main idea is to look at the world through the eyes of a child. To see what we, as adults, might miss.' 'Animation in Estonia and the Baltics seems to be blossoming, but shorts are on a 'poorer' side. It's not easy to screen [your works] and it's hard to find money. In the ideal world, it would be easy to fund a new project with previous works' screening fees, but we can only dream about it,' explain Piret Sigus and Silja Saarepuu in a shared statement. Their indie cut-out animation studio Animailm has delivered 'The Turnip' and 'Robot Leo,' but – as many other creators – is also open for external collabs. 'We offer studio space, skillful hands and bright ideas,' they say. Oskar Lehemaa's 'stop-motion love' started all the way back in childhood, when he saw 'the slightly jagged and eerie movements of the first 'Wallace and Gromit' short on TV.' While he describes himself as a 'newcomer in the animation world,' Lehemaa co-directed outrageous comedy 'The Old Man Movie,' about a dramatic search for an unmilked cow, and 'The Mystery of Missing Socks.' 'I just love the texture and the tangible quality that stop-motion can offer. Sure, you can create pretty much anything on a computer, including a decent 'stop-motion look,' but its actual restrictions – real puppets, sets, camera and lights – inform the work. It becomes a part of your art.'
