Indian rupee to ride Asia FX rally on US-China trade cheer
MUMBAI: The Indian rupee is likely to be well supported at open on Monday, aided by the strength in Asian currencies following positive trade-related developments between the U.S. and China.
The one-month non-deliverable forward suggests the rupee , which rallied 1.3% last week to 85.4750 per U.S. dollar, will open slightly firmer.
Last week's move marked the rupee's best weekly performance in over two years, fuelled by the plunge in oil prices and continued weakness in the dollar.
The rupee's bias remains skewed to upside after last week's clean break below 85.80, a currency trader at a Mumbai-based bank said.
Indian rupee rally likely to extend on positive Asian cues, inflow hopes
There is likely to be 'good supply on upticks' on the dollar/rupee pair, he said, pegging support at 85.30 and then at 85.
The offshore Chinese yuan inched up at 7.16 to the dollar and it is not too far away from its year-to-date high. The South Korean won added 0.5%, the top performer among major Asian currencies.
Optimism over the U.S. trade deals and mounting expectations of the Federal Reserve's rate cuts boosted Asian currencies.
The White House said on Thursday it had signed an agreement with China to accelerate rare earth approvals.
Hours later, Beijing said both sides had agreed on the terms of the deal reached in London earlier this month, developments investors took to signal progress.
Meanwhile, U.S. economic data on Friday added to the case for the Fed rate cuts this year, particularly against the backdrop of progress on the trade front.
U.S. real consumer spending was softer than expected, leading our economists to revise down their real GDP growth tracking to 2.0% from 2.1%, Morgan Stanley said in a note.
Following the data, traders increased bets that the Fed will cut short-term borrowing costs by a total of 75 basis points in 2025, with the first move likely in September.

Gulf bourses end mixed; Dubai at 17-year high
Stock markets in the Gulf ended mixed on Monday with some including the Saudi index hit by profit-taking, while those in the United Arab Emirates continued their rebound following Iran-Israel ceasefire and Dubai reached a 17-year high. Dubai's main share index rose for sixth consecutive session to close 0.4% higher, at its highest since June 2008, with blue-chip developer Emaar Properties rising 1.1%. In other sectors, National Central Cooling Co (Tabreed) advanced 1.8%. Tabreed and private equity firm CVC's infrastructure strategy arm, CVC DIF, plan to acquire Abu Dhabi-based Multiply Group's district cooling business. CVC DIF and Tabreed have entered into a partnership to acquire PAL Cooling Holding at an equity value of about 3.8 billion dirhams ($1.03 billion). Multiply Group shares were up 2.6%. The market appears well-supported by strong fundamentals for a continued upward trend, said Osama Al Saifi, Managing Director for MENA at Traze. In Abu Dhabi, the index gained 0.7%. Most Gulf markets end higher on Iran ceasefire, US rate cut expectations Saudi Arabia's benchmark index dropped 0.4%, snapping a five-session winning streak, weighed down by a 2.5% fall in Al Rajhi Bank. The Saudi market concluded its second quarter with losses. The next significant event could be upcoming second-quarter earnings results, which could help spur a recovery in the second half of the year, said Al Saifi. 'However, the potential for lower oil prices remains a headwind,' he said. On the other hand, oil giant Saudi Aramco added 0.1%. Oil prices - a catalyst for the Gulf's financial markets - held steady as Middle East risks eased, while a possible OPEC+ output increase in August and uncertainty over the global demand outlook weighed on the market. The Qatari benchmark lost 0.2%, ending six consecutive sessions of gains, with petrochemical maker Industries Qatar declining 1%. Outside the Gulf, Egypt's blue-chip index retreated 1.1%, with Talaat Moustafa Group Holding dropping 2.3%. Expensify capitalizes on F1 movie sponsorship to boost user growth and expand international product features
Brad Pitt starrer 'F1' is one of the few big-budget original films this year. Photo: File Financial tech company Expensify is leveraging its title sponsorship role in Apple Originals' new F1 movie to boost revenue and expand its global brand awareness. The Portland-based firm paid a multi-million-dollar fee—part of over $40 million in total brand partnerships for the film—securing prominent placement as the fictional 'Expensify APX GP' Formula 1 team. The movie, which premiered in theaters nationwide on June 27, 2025, includes frequent on-screen references to Expensify, including brand visibility during mock press conferences and shout-outs from real-life Sky Sports commentator David Croft. CFO Ryan Schaffer told Sports Business Journal (SBJ) that the company is targeting a 5:1 return on its investment through increased sign-ups and product upgrades, though lower returns may be acceptable if brand awareness improves significantly. That visibility translated into measurable user engagement. After actor Damson Idris, who co-stars alongside Brad Pitt in the film, wore an APX GP firesuit to the Met Gala in May, user sign-ups spiked fourfold within hours, according to Schaffer. 'Anyone promoting the movie is also promoting Expensify,' he said, calling the placement potentially 'the get of a lifetime.' In tandem with the movie release, Expensify rolled out several new product features aimed at international users. These include support for 10 languages, integration with thousands of new banks globally, multi-currency billing, international reimbursement options, and expanded availability of the Expensify Visa Commercial Card. The company has launched a social media campaign to amplify its exposure and has already received sponsorship inquiries from real-world F1 and NBA teams. Though not committed to any deals yet, Schaffer said Expensify will evaluate opportunities. 'Ultimately, we want this to turn into revenue,' he added. 'The jury is still out on that.' Whether the campaign meets its ambitious targets or not, Expensify has already secured a major boost in visibility.

India to see above-average July rains after wetter than normal June
MUMBAI: India is likely to get above-average monsoon rainfall, critical to the economy, in July after receiving 9% above-normal rains in June, a senior weather department official said on Monday. The monsoon is the lifeblood of India's nearly $4 trillion economy, delivering almost 70% of the rainfall needed to water farms and replenishing aquifers and reservoirs. Nearly half of India's farmland is not irrigated and depends on the annual June-September rains for crop growth. All regions, except northeastern states and the southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, are likely to receive rainfall equating to more than 106% of the 50-year average in July, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director-general of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), told a virtual news conference. Soybean and cotton-growing states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh are likely to receive above-average rainfall, as are rice-growing northern and most eastern states, according to Mohapatra. Pakistan, India, Nepal may receive above-average rains India received 9% more rainfall than the long-period average for June, as the monsoon covered the entire country nine days ahead of its normal schedule. Farmers usually start planting summer-sown crops such as rice, corn, cotton, soybeans and sugarcane after the arrival of monsoon rains. The early arrival of monsoon and above-average rainfall has accelerated planting of summer-sown crops, farm ministry data showed on Monday. Farmers had planted 26.2 million hectares with summer-sown crops by Monday, up 11.3% on the same period last year. Rice was planted on 3.5 million hectares, larger than last year's 2.4 million hectares. Farmers had planted another 4.9 million hectares with oilseeds, including soybeans, up from 4 million hectares a year ago. Planting will gain further momentum in the coming weeks as recent rainfall has improved soil moisture levels, said a Mumbai-based dealer with a global trade house. 'July rainfall is very crucial for summer crops. We can expect good yields if the monsoon delivers surplus rainfall in July,' the dealer said.
