JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) -James O'Connor will play his first test for Australia in three years after being handed the flyhalf jersey for the Rugby Championship opener against South Africa on Saturday in a surprise move from coach Joe Schmidt.
O'Connor, 35, has not featured for the Wallabies since a 48-17 loss to Argentina in 2022, but injuries to Noah Lolesio and Tom Lynagh have opened the door for his return.
Ben Donaldson, 26, who came off the bench in Australia's last three tests, is not in the match-day 23 having played 45 minutes in the 22-12 win over the British & Irish Lions last time out.
Schmidt has opted for a 6-2 split between forwards and backs and Donaldson misses out, with loose-forward Nick Champion de Crespigny taking his place on the bench at Ellis Park.
Billy Pollard starts at hooker with experienced props James Slipper and Taniela Tupou either side of him.
Nick Frost and giant Will Skelton make up the second row, and Tom Hooper retains the number six jersey with Rob Valetini still injured.
Scrumhalf Nic White, who postponed his international retirement to go on this two-match tour to South Africa, will be alongside O'Connor.
Len Ikitau and Joseph Suaalii are the centre pairing, while the back three is made up of wings Dylan Pietsch and Max Jorgensen, and fullback Tom Wright.
"The group has had a good week of preparation, adjusting pretty well to the time zone and the altitude well here in Johannesburg," Schmidt said.
"There's not many bigger Tests than playing South Africa on their home turf and we know we're going to need to be at our best on Saturday night."
Australia are seeking their first win at Ellis Park since 1963, when they beat South Africa 11-9.
Australia team:
15–Tom Wright, 14–Max Jorgensen, 13–Joseph Suaalii, 12–Len Ikitau, 11–Dylan Pietsch, 10–James O'Connor, 9–Nic White, 8–Harry Wilson (captain), 7–Fraser McReight, 6–Tom Hooper, 5–Will Skelton, 4–Nick Frost, 3–Taniela Tupou, 2–Billy Pollard, 1–James Slipper
Replacements: 16–Brandon Paenga-Amosa, 17–Angus Bell, 18–Zane Nonggorr, 19–Jeremy Williams, 20–Langi Gleeson, 21–Nick Champion de Crespigny, 22–Tate McDermott, 23–Andrew Kellaway

Rugby-New role for captain Kolisi as South Africa look to nullify Aussie threat

Rugby Union - Rugby Championship - South Africa Captain's Run - Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa - August 15, 2025 South Africa's Siya Kolisi with teammates during training REUTERS/Siphiwe Sibeko JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) -South Africa captain Siya Kolisi might be fast approaching 100 caps for his country, but when they take on Australia on Saturday, he will be scrumming down at No. 8 for the first time in a Springbok jersey. He starts the opening Rugby Championship clash against the Wallabies at Ellis Park at the back of the pack, moved from the flank in a move designed to counter Australia's prowess at breakdown play. 'My role will change slightly in the lineouts and the scrums, but other than that I'll be fulfilling my usual role,' Kolisi told a press conference on Friday. 'Playing No. 8 at the Sharks certainly helped me, although the role here is different,' he said of previous experience at franchise level. 'I'm also not the same type of player as Jasper (Wiese) or Duane (Vermeulen) in terms of my size, so I'm going to give what I can offer.' Vermeulen was a colossus at No. 8 for the Boks when they won the last two World Cups and since his retirement Wiese has similarly been physically brutal in his style. However, he is suspended for Saturday's clash. "The breakdowns are going to be a big area of the game, so myself, (flankers) Marco (van Staden) and Pieter-Steph (du Toit) have important jobs, although that said, the breakdowns are a team effort," added Kolisi, who wins a 94th cap. Kolisi at No. 8 gives South Africa more effectiveness at breakdown play, countering Australia's threat, said coach Rassie Erasmus earlier this week. 'The more we prepared, we realised the only time Siya really plays at eight is during scrums, and scrums happen maybe 13 or 14 times a game. General play happens far more. Australia are a huge threat at the breakdown, and Pieter-Steph, Marco and Siya are really strong there,' said the coach. Saturday's clash comes after Australia lost their home series 2-1 to the British & Irish Lions, albeit winning the last test in Sydney at the start of the month. South Africa will start as strong favourites but Kolisi cautioned about looking ahead to a potentially stiffer test against New Zealand later in the southern hemisphere championship. "The talk in our camp has solely been on Australia. We saw how they played against the British & Irish Lions, and we've been in the position they are now in the past, so it would be foolish to think that they won't throw everything at us,' Kolisi said. Rugby-Wallabies change their mind about flyhalf cover for Bok clash

FILE PHOTO: Rugby Union - Autumn International - Wales v Australia - Principality Stadium, Cardiff, Wales, Britain - November 20, 2021 Australia's James O'Connor in action. Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Boyers/File Photo JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) -Australia have made a change to their bench for Saturday's Rugby Championship clash against South Africa after re-evaluating the cover they want for veteran flyhalf James O'Connor. Coach Joe Schmidt on Friday decided he would pick Tane Edmed, who has a single cap, as cover and has taken loose forward Nick Champion de Crespigny off the list of replacements he had named on Thursday. Ben Donaldson was originally meant to be cover for the 35-year-old O'Connor, who will play for the Wallabies for the first time in three years, but went down with an unspecified upper leg injury in training on Thursday ahead of the test at Ellis Park. It added to the woes at No. 10 for Australia, whose first choice Tom Lynagh suffered a concussion in the third test against the British & Irish Lions in Sydney a fortnight ago and did not travel for the two matches against the Springboks. The second clash is in Cape Town next weekend. 'Dono (Donaldson) went down in last-minute training on Thursday afternoon, which wasn't ideal after the team has been announced internally,' explained captain Harry Wilson at a press conference on Friday. 'We named Crep (Champion de Crespigny) but the coach has had a few meetings overnight and again this morning to work out what would be the best replacement and decided to put in Tane, which he's really excited about. "We've got a lot of confidence in him, he's been around the group now for a little while and what he's put in on the training park has been first class," Wilson added. The captain is also pleased to see O'Connor back in the line-up. 'After three years, I know he's really excited to be out there. He's 35 years old. He's got plenty of experience. He's got plenty of confidence, and we can't wait to see him go out there and do his job.' O'Connor will also form an experienced halfback combination with Nic White, who put off his retirement from international rugby to travel with the Wallabies after injury to Jake Gordon, who played at scrumhalf in the first two tests against the Lions last month. 'When you have two players in two really key positions, who have played everywhere around the world and in really big matches, definitely it's a lot of confidence and they both have quite loud voices in the group and a lot of respect from everyone in the group," added Wilson. "So I'm really looking forward to seeing them lead us around the park.' (Editing by Pritha Sarkar)

Rugby-Springboks forced into late bench replacement ahead of Australia clash

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) -South Africa have been forced into a late change to their bench for Saturday's opening Rugby Championship test against Australia at Ellis Park in Johannesburg with prop Boan Venter replacing the injured Jan-Hendrik Wessels. Wessels was injured in training on Wednesday and has not recovered in time and will be replaced by Venter, who made his Springboks debut against Georgia last month. Venter joins fellow prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye and experienced hooker Bongi Mbonambi as the front row replacements, with South Africa opting for a 5-3 split between forwards and backs on the bench, diminishing the effectiveness of their so-called 'Bomb Squad' of forward replacements. Updated South Africa team: 15–Aphelele Fassi, 14–Edwill van der Merwe, 13–Jesse Kriel, 12–Andre Esterhuizen, 11–Kurt-Lee Arendse, 10–Manie Libbok, 9–Grant Williams, 8–Siya Kolisi (captain), 7–Pieter-Steph du Toit, 6–Marco van Staden, 5–Lood de Jager, 4–Eben Etzebeth, 3–Wilco Louw, 2–Malcolm Marx, 1–Ox Nche Replacements: 16–Bongi Mbonambi, 17–Boan Venter, 18–Asenathi Ntlabakanye, 19–Franco Mostert, 20–Kwagga Smith, 21–Cobus Reinach, 22–Canan Moodie, 23–Damian Willemse.
