SUPP will continue pushing for S'wak Cancer Centre's development, says Engkilili branch chairman

Kua Jack Seng KUCHING (Aug 18): The Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Engkilili branch yesterday said that Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong's attempt to stir up the issue about the proposed Sarawak Cancer Centre's progress was uncalled for. Its chairman Kua Jack Seng, who is also a political secretary to the Premier, said the Sarawak government had already outlined its development plan for the centre, which had been tabled at the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) Committee meeting in Kuala Lumpur. 'The necessary steps are being pursued progressively. 'Unfortunately, Violet Yong continues to shout slogans such as 'the government should announce progress' as if she were the first to discover that Sarawak has cancer patients,' he said in a statement yesterday. Kua questioned what Democratic Action Party (DAP) had done for Sarawak when it was part of the federal government back then. 'The cancer centre is indeed an urgent need. But the real question is this — when DAP was part of the federal government, what exactly did Violet Yong and her colleagues do to fight for Sarawak's healthcare facilities? 'Even when Sarawak General Hospital's (SGH) oncology department was overwhelmed and hospital beds were insufficient, where was she then? Or is this simply a case of selective amnesia?' he asked. He said the Sarawak government was already in the preparatory phase and awaiting federal funding support, as far as the proposed centre was concerned. He found it ironic that Yong insisted there should be no further delays, adding: 'Her DAP colleagues in the federal cabinet were themselves the very embodiment of delays.' Kua pointed out that Sarawakians needed builders, not political loudspeakers who repeated the same lines. 'SUPP will continue to push for the cancer centre's implementation to ensure that Sarawakians receive proper medical facilities instead of being treated to political theatrics.' On Saturday, Yong had called for an update on the proposed Sarawak Cancer Centre, urging the state government to keep Sarawakians informed as the centre was a life-saving necessity, especially since the SGH's oncology unit was stretched beyond capacity.

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 17): Likas assemblyman Datuk Tan Lee Fatt has expressed his readiness to defend his seat in the upcoming state elections. Tan, who has served two terms as a Democratic Action Party (DAP) assemblyman, said it is ultimately up to the people in his constituency to evaluate his performance. 'I have done my best to serve Likas, but in the end, it is for the people to judge my report card,' he said, while noting that the final decision on candidacy lies with the party leadership. He added that no official decision has yet been made on the candidate, but confirmed that DAP will defend the Likas state seat in the coming polls. Highlighting key issues faced by his constituents, Tan pointed to traffic congestion in the Kota Kinabalu area and stressed the need for a more effective public transportation system. 'With a smoother and more effective public transportation system, we can not only ease congestion but also reduce transportation costs for the people,' said the State Assistant Finance Minister. Tan was speaking to reporters after officiating the Doa Sayangi Malaysia programme at the Sri Pasupathinath Alayam temple in Bukit Padang on Sunday. The event, which featured the singing of national and state songs while carrying the national flag, was aimed at fostering unity and patriotism among people of various races and religions. Also present was Malaysia Hindu Sangam state council chairman Datuk Dr G. Mohan A. Gopal Naidoo.

Solve your conflict between yourselves, Takiyuddin tells Umno and DAP

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan criticised his DAP counterpart, Loke Siew Fook, for taking 'excessive, inappropriate actions', and potentially worsening the situation. PETALING JAYA : Sort out your squabble between yourselves without involving the police and public, a PAS leader has urged DAP and Umno over the Jalur Gemilang controversy. PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the two parties had magnified the controversy through the reciprocal actions of both parties 'with their own reasons and motives'. Takiyuddin said they should not involve the police, who would be burdened with unnecessary workload, or the public, who would be drawn into unhealthy and unproductive discussions. 'This is especially so because the situation arose merely from the act of a single person who hoisted the Jalur Gemilang upside down, a matter which is already under police investigation,' he said. Takiyuddin said PAS has instructed its youth wing not to interfere in the matter. He was referring to DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook's directive to DAP Youth to lodge police reports across the country over a demonstration by Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh near a hardware shop in Kepala Batas on Thursday. The protest was held after the shop owner mistakenly hoisted a Jalur Gemilang flag upside down, which led to public outrage when the video became viral. Takiyuddin criticised Loke, calling his actions 'excessive, inappropriate, and potentially worsening the situation'. He also called on both sides to respect and support the police investigation without adding unnecessary pressure, warning that failure to do so would risk making matters worse. 'An issue originally involving just one person will then spill over, drawing the wider public into a destructive cycle,' he said.
