The identity of the social media account owner is currently unknown.
Malaysian police will approach Meta Platforms in Singapore to identify the owner of a social media account that allegedly defamed a male singer-actor in a post.
According to Malaysian media reports, the artiste filed a police report on July 18 against a Threads post that allegedly contained defamatory and slanderous statements about him.
The reports did not name the artiste nor describe the content of the post.
Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said on Aug 4 that the police will work with Meta to track down the person behind the social media post.
He was quoted as saying by local news outlet New Straits Times that the identity of the social media account owner is currently unknown.
'I have instructed our investigating officers to contact Meta Platforms Inc in Singapore to help trace the individual behind the Threads account,' Datuk Mohamed Usuf said.
The Cyber Division of Malaysia's Commercial Crime Investigation Department will also be asked to help identify the IP address of the account owner, he added.
Investigations are ongoing, and statements have been recorded from four persons , said Mr Mohamed Usuf.
The Straits Times has contacted Meta for more details.
Malaysian media outlet Harian Metro earlier reported that a police report had been lodged by the singer-actor on July 18 .
'The report was made because (the social media post) could damage the complainant's image and reputation,' Mr Mohamed Usuf was quoted as saying.

Russian drone strike kills two in Ukraine's northeast Kharkiv region

A police report on the Telegram messaging app said a man and a woman were killed near Vovchansk, an area that was visited during the day by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Russian forces staged a brief incursion into the region near Vovchansk in May 2024, but Ukrainian troops later recaptured most of the area. Separately, Ukraine's Interior Ministry said that the number of dead had risen to seven in a Russian strike last Thursday on an apartment building in the city of Kramatorsk in eastern Donetsk region. Ukraine charges six people, including lawmaker, in drone procurement scheme

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox KYIV - Ukraine said on Monday it had charged six people including a lawmaker and a government official for embezzling funds in the purchase of drones and jamming equipment for the military. Kyiv relies on a steady supply of drones and electronic warfare systems to fight Moscow's invasion and is also waging a crackdown on graft critical to its future in the European Union. Anti-corruption authorities said on Saturday they had uncovered a scheme involving the legislator, one сurrent and one now sacked official, a National Guard commander and two businessmen, giving kickbacks for purchases at inflated prices. "In 2024–2025, an organised criminal group systematically misappropriated funds allocated by local authorities for defence needs," the National Anti-Corruption Bureau said in a statement, adding the bribes totalled around 30% of the contracts' value. The drone contract was worth $240,000 with an inflation of about $80,000, the bureau said. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who sparked a public furore last month for briefly scrapping the independence of two anti-corruption agencies, praised the move on Saturday after meeting the agency heads. Besides the lawmaker, those charged on Monday include a former governor and regional administration chief, the head of a city military administration, the commander of a National Guard Unit, and the director and the owner of a drone manufacturer. Lions hooker Sheehan handed four-match ban over Lynagh foul

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox British & Irish Lions hooker Dan Sheehan has been handed a four-match suspension, which can be reduced to three by completing a coaching intervention, for a foul on Australia fly half Tom Lynagh in the third test in Sydney, World Rugby said on Monday. Sheehan is set to be ruled out of his club Leinster's pre-season game with Cardiff and their United Rugby Championship matches against Stormers and Sharks in September and October. He will also miss the game against Munster on October 18 if he fails to successfully complete the coaching intervention. Lynagh had failed a head injury assessment and was unable to continue after an apparent hit from Sheehan's elbow, as the Lions suffered their only loss of the nine-match tour of Australia on Saturday. Sheehan, who had initially denied any foul play, has accepted the suspension given to him by an independent foul play review committee, World Rugby said in a statement. "In determining foul play, the committee found that Sheehan's actions were reckless. The committee found that he made head contact with the Australian player, that his action amounted to a high degree of danger and that no mitigation applied," World Rugby added. REUTERS
