List of Cities Canceling 4th of July Events Expands: What to Know

Several cities across the United States have canceled their Fourth of July celebrations just before the holiday.
These cities are citing several reasons for canceling or postponing their celebrations, including fears that Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers might use the event to arrest people, as well as concerns about overcrowding.

The cities that have canceled their celebrations or limited their festivities as of July 3 are:
County of Los Angeles: East LA Rockin' 4th of July
The Los Angeles Parks and Recreation Department has canceled East LA's Rockin' 4th of July celebration, among other community events, "out of caution, and in response to recent ICE enforcement activity impacting our communities."
Bell Gardens, CA: All events
The city of Bell Gardens has canceled all Independence Day events due to concerns about ICE. The predominantly Hispanic city has been hosting several events over the past few months aimed at educating immigrants on their rights regarding ICE arrests.
Esparto Area, CA: Five Fireworks Displays
Displays in Lodi Lake, El Dorado, Chico, Cloverdale, and St Helena have all been canceled following an explosion at the warehouse containing fireworks for these events. Seven people are still unaccounted for following the blast, causing the displays to be canceled out of respect for those affected.
Whittier, CA: 4th of July Freedom Walk
The city of Whittier has canceled its 4th of July Freedom Walk following community concerns about the event. Although city officials did not reference ICE in the announcement, Whittier has seen an increase in ICE activity over the past months.
Mayor Joe Vinatieri cited "recent feedback we've received from some community members" as the reason for canceling the event. Whittier is still hosting a fireworks display at York Field.
SeaTac, WA: Fireworks/Drone Display
The city of SeaTac has canceled its fireworks display, citing concerns over crowd control and safety. David Inman, the city's communications director, said Angle Lake Park, where the display takes place, has a capacity of 3,200 people, but 10,000 people came last year with only 10 police officers on duty.
A statement from the city said: "We simply cannot ensure a safe environment for large nighttime events at this time."
Inman has said this decision is not related to last year's drone disaster, when the city shifted away from fireworks and spent $40,000 on a drone display, only for 55 of the 200 drones to fall into the lake.
Itasca, IL: Fireworks Display
The village of Itasca is known for hosting the largest Fourth of July fireworks display in Illinois, but has had to cancel the famous event this year. Village administrator Carrie Ergo said it was an "extremely difficult decision to make."
The display has been canceled due to construction around Hamilton Lakes Business Park. The building works led to limited space for the holiday crowd. This is in addition to existing concerns about crowd control, as the event has become a lot more popular since the COVID-19 pandemic, and has led to community issues, including drunk and disorderly behavior and trespassing.
The village was faced with a dilemma of either significantly increasing its budget to accommodate the changes or canceling the event this year.

Whittier Mayor Joe Vinatieri said in a press release: "While celebrating our nation's founding is very important to me and to Whittier residents, my colleagues and I also want to be sensitive to the recent feedback we've received from some community members asking that we pause this year's Freedom Walk event."
Itasca Village Administrator Carrie Ergo said in a press release: "This was an extremely difficult decision to make. Itasca takes great pride in hosting the biggest and best fireworks show in Northern Illinois. Our first priority is always protecting the safety and security of Itasca residents, businesses, and visitors. Given the unique challenges presented this year, we cannot confidently recommend hosting fireworks in 2025."
Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation said on social media: "It is with deep respect and a heavy heart that the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation announces...the cancellation of this year's East Los Angeles Rockin 4th of July celebration. Out of caution, and in response to recent ICE enforcement activity impacting our communities, we are prioritizing safety and well-being of our residents, visitors, and staff."
What Happens Next
The vast majority of Fourth of July events will still take place across the country.
There are also mass protests against the Trump administration planned for the holiday weekend. Organized by the Women's March, the "Free America Weekend" protests will take place in cities across 34 states, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Montgomery, Houston, and Seattle.

11 stabbed at northern Michigan Walmart; suspect in custody
A lone attacker has been arrested after allegedly randomly stabbing 11 victims late Saturday afternoon at a Walmart in Traverse City, Mich. None of the 11 stabbing victims has died, but three are undergoing surgery following the attack that occurred around 5 p.m. EDT, the Traverse City Record-Eagle reported. The lone suspect used a folding knife in what appeared to be a random attack, Grand Traverse County Sheriff Mike Shea told the Record-Eagle. The suspect 'appears' to be a Michigan resident, Shea said during a press conference. A group of bystanders, including at least one armed with a pistol, confronted the suspect and forced him to drop the knife while awaiting a police response, video footage posted by WZZM shows. Michigan State Police crime lab investigators are helping to gather and analyze evidence at the crime scene, which is located in the Grand Traverse Crossing mall in the southwestern portion of Traverse City. The stabbing victims were taken to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, where five are in serious condition and six are in critical condition. 'We are working closely with local authorities and emergency services to ensure the best possible care for those impacted,' hospital staff said. Traverse City is a popular vacation destination at the southern end of Lake Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay in northern lower Michigan. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, a potential 2026 presidential candidate for the Democratic Party, and his husband, Chasten Buttigieg, moved to Traverse City in 2022. The city had a year-round population of 15,707 in 2023, but the population there and in nearby communities swells greatly during the summer months. It's known for beautiful sandy beaches, great freshwater fishing and hosting an annual National Cherry Festival that runs from the end of June through the Independence Day holiday. ICE arrests Maryland pastor for overstaying visa, holds him in Louisiana
BALTIMORE - A pastor from Maryland's Eastern Shore has been arrested by U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement and transported to a detention facility in Louisiana after the agency said he overstayed his visa. Daniel Fuentes Espinal, a 54-year-old father of three originally from Honduras, has been pastor of the Iglesia del Nazareno Jesus Te Ama (Church of the Nazarene Jesus Loves You) in Easton since 2015. His family fled violence in Honduras in 2001, when ICE said Fuentes Espinal was granted a visa to remain in the U.S. for six months. "Fuentes entered the United States on a 6-month visa and never left in 24 years. It is a federal crime to overstay the authorized period of time granted under a visitors visa," ICE said in a statement. Fuentes Espinal's daughter, Clarissa Fuentes Diaz, was eight years old when she left Honduras with her father and was recently notified she would become a U.S. citizen. She told multiple news outlets that Fuentes Espinal, who also works in construction, was followed to a Lowe's hardware store on the day of his arrest and taken into custody while running routine errands. Fuentes Espinal was held in Salisbury and Baltimore before being moved to the Winn Correctional Center, a private prison facility used by ICE to detain immigrants in northwestern Louisiana, according to Fuentes Diaz. This facility is about an hour's drive from an ICE detention center in the town of Jena, where Columbia University pro-Palestine activist Mahmoud Khalil was held for more than three months. Fuentes Espinal's two other children were born in the U.S., according to Maryland Matters. Sen. Chris Van Hollen, who emerged as a leader among Democrats by visiting El Salvador when Kilmar Abrego Garcia was wrongfully deported this spring, told Maryland Matters that his office has been in contact with Fuentes Espinal's family and is continuing to monitor the situation. Maryland Reps. Sarah Elfreth and Glenn Ivey, both Democrats, sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, calling for Fuentes Espinal's release. The letter notes that Fuentes Espinal has no criminal record in his more than two decades living in the U.S. "We believe that the arrest and detention of Pastor Espinal does not reflect this Administration's repeated commitment to arrest, detain, and remove violent criminals," the letter reads. "… His arrest and detention by ICE does nothing to further your state goals of making America safer." The Maryland Office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations also condemned the arrest, calling Fuentes Espinal a "widely respected pastor" who has tried to obtain American citizenship. "Detaining a widely respected pastor who has been serving the Maryland community for twenty years while attempting to rectify his legal status sends a chilling message," CAIR's Maryland director, Zainab Chaudry, said in a statement. "We call on ICE to immediately release this pastor and stop wasting government resources targeting immigrants who have done nothing but contribute to our society." As of Saturday morning, a GoFundMe campaign for Fuentes Espinal's legal expenses and to support his family had raised more than $28,000 of its $40,000 goal.
