Palakkad Division undertakes replacing and strengthening of turnouts to enhance safety in Mangaluru
Southern Railway's Palakkad Division has undertaken massive replacement and strengthening of turnouts in a significant step towards enhancing train safety and operational efficiency.
The division has replaced a total of 133 existing old 52 kg turnouts with Thick Web Switches of 60Kg (heavier material) in the last one year thereby ensuring stronger and more durable track structures. A thick web switch (point) is a type of railway turnout, designed to improve safety and durability on high-speed tracks.
The key feature of a TWS is a thicker web in the stock and tongue rails, which provides higher strength and resistance to wear and tear, especially at higher speeds. A turnout, also known as a point or a crossing, is a mechanical device allowing a train to switch from one track to another.
During the process, 77 layouts (turnouts) were corrected to perfect geometry using advanced computer solutions, involving precise longitudinal and lateral shifting with the help of the Track Relaying (T-28) Machine. This has resulted in improved safety and passenger comfort, said a release.
The weak and dust-laden small stones (known as ballast) beneath the railway tracks were cleaned and replaced to ensure a minimum clean ballast cushion of 250mm. This enhanced layer of clean ballast provides improved track elasticity, stability and firmness, even during heavy rainfall or under the dynamic loads of train operations. Palakkad division carried out deep screening of 145 such turnouts during the last one year.
These systematic measures not only improve passenger comfort but significantly enhance the overall safety of rail operations. These initiatives align with Indian Railways' vision of providing faster and safer rail travel by adhering strictly to the highest standards of track maintenance and safety protocols, the release added.

Suburban AC train scrapes platforms, staff ‘hammer' back rakes
Chennai: Southern Railway 's much-hyped air-conditioned suburban train, introduced with fanfare as a symbol of modern urban transit, came to an embarrassing halt on Sunday after its rakes began scraping against station platforms along the Tambaram–Beach line. The incident, caught on video by commuters, exposed not only a technical flaw in design but also the railways' crude on-ground response. Videos showed railway workers crouching below the train with no power tools, using handheld hammers to strike the bottom edge of compartments that were grinding against platform edges. In each instance, after hammering a compartment's lower panel, workers used their mobile phones to record whether the rake could pass smoothly — essentially disfiguring the train. There was no official explanation from the Southern Railway on why it deployed a trainset that physically couldn't fit within its platforms. However, railway sources, on condition of anonymity, said that the issue could stem from marginal miscalculations in rake width or floor height that fail to account for older platform curvature or protrusions—especially at stations with legacy alignments. "If railways couldn't even test rake-platform compatibility before launch, what does that say about safety," asked Madipakkam resident Vignesh. After more than 600 negative feedback submissions, Southern Railway revised timings from May 2—advancing Train No. 49004's arrival and altering evening services. The rake was launched on April 19, after criticism of keeping the rake idle for tests and waiting for a VIP schedule to inaugurate it.

Brake failure in EMU disrupts rail traffic near Pallavaram
Suburban train services were disrupted for more than 30 minutes on the Tambaram-Beach section due to brake failure in an electrical multiple unit (EMU) train near Pallavaram on Wednesday. The technical glitch resulted in a few suburban trains being halted before the Pallavaram railway station.A senior official of the Chennai division of Southern Railway said an EMU train proceeding from Pallavaram to Beach station was halted just outside the station after the loco pilot noticed smoke emanating from the brake system of a coach. The brake failure, which is technically called 'brake binding', forced the train to be stopped near the Pallavaram station, by which time another suburban train almost reached the station. Consequently, the suburban train services operated between Tambaram and Beach were disrupted during the morning peak hours. However, train services resumed after the railway maintenance staff rectified the problem.
