By the eighth, ringside physician Dr. Robert Ruelaz ruled the fight needed to be stopped with Navarrete's vision impaired.
Per the rules of boxing, if a cut is caused by a punch and the bout is stopped it results in a TKO.
But, if deemed to have been caused by a headbutt then the fight goes to the judges scorecards at the time of the stoppage.
In this case, Navarrete led on the cards and was awarded a technical decision - retaining his 130lb title.
Video replay was used on the night and official Jack Reiss said there was no conclusive evidence to deem that a punch caused the cut.
Footage revealed a swiping left hook landing on Navarrete before the two came together shortly afterwards - making it unclear where the cut was caused.
But, in a subsequent review days after the bout, the California State Athletic Commission now look set to overturn the result, BoxingScene report.
It marks a rare occasion when a fight is overturned using replays in the days following the bout.

Had the punch been deemed to have caused the cut on the night of the fight it would have crowned Suarez as the new champ.
But, if Navarrete's win is indeed overturned to a no-contest then he will still retain the title with a rematch expected to be called.
He said after the fight: 'I felt it was a headbutt. I saw the review. It seems like a punch, but it exploded two layers of skin.
'I didn't want it to end. I was fine to keep going. I felt like the best rounds were still to come. But the doctor stopped the fight.
'He would be a great opponent. He is a great opponent. So a rematch would be good.'
Suarez added: 'I thought I had a chance to win the fight. I had five more rounds to try to win."

The Essex ace used to sell Pukka Pies at the Portman Road stadium a decade ago, while doing his school exams. And he returned to his old stomping ground for six one-sided rounds where he showed plenty of his amateur skill and future potential. England player ratings: Noni Madueke and Curtis Jones best of a bad bunch with Reece James totally looking lost on left
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) NONI MADUEKE was determined to get England over the line during their laboured 1-0 win against Andorra in the World Cup qualifiers. Harry Kane notched his 72nd goal for his country and Thomas Tuchel went rogue by starting Curtis Jones in right-back to make room for 34-year-old Jordan Henderson in the middle. Kane, who poked wide in the first 30 minutes, finally found a breakthrough when he smashed in Chelsea winger Madueke's quick low cross five minutes after the break. But there's reasons for concerns and holiday-mode England struggled to break down the home side's bus-parking tactics - weeks after Albania put three goals away against Andorra. However, Tuchel became the first England manager to win his first three games in charge, without conceding a single goal as his side remains top of Group K. READ MORE FOOTBALL NEWS BELL OF THE BALL Bellingham's girlfriend Ashlyn spotted in stands with England star's mum Here SunSport's Charlie Wyett rates and slates the England players from sunny Spain. Jordan Pickford - 5 As expected, a bystander in goal and Tuchel should have given James Trafford a debut. 12 Ezri Konsa - 5 Aston Villa star looks to be England's first-choice central defender and he will not get an easier game than this. 12 Dan Burn - 4 It is now obvious that Tuchel loves the Newcastle defender and he has got a very good chance of going to the World Cup although some of his passing was dreadful. The likes of Harry Maguire and Eric Dier must be peed off. 12 Reece James - 4 Just 24 hours after James said his best position was right-back, Thomas Tuchel played him at left-back. He did not look that comfortable. He also produced a terrible delivery at a free-kick near the end. 12 Curtis Jones - 6 Played as an inverted right-back so had plenty of licence to get forward. Played a part in the opening goal with a clever pass to Kane. 12 Jude Bellingham - 5 Had the first shot of the game after 56 seconds but did not cause too many problems in his offensive midfield role. Jordan Henderson - 5 Cap no 84 for the Ajax midfielder although this was his first start since November 2023. You can see why Tuchel wants a player of his experience but he did not have much influence here 12 Morgan Rogers - 5 Delivered some silky skills which caused Andorra a few problems but lacked an end product. 12 Cole Palmer - 6 Has been on fire in training during the week in Girona but did not really get involved although saw plenty of the ball. 12 Noni Madueke - 7 England's best player although should have scored in injury-time. Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) DEONTAY WILDER has emerged as a shock contender to fight Anthony Joshua in a bid to settle their storied score. The two spent years in dragged out failed negotiations - leaving an undisputed blockbuster to fall by the wayside. Both times it cost the American a revived clash with Joshua - who is yet to return since being KO'd by Daniel Dubois in September. Wilder, 39, faces Tyrrell Herndon in Kansas on June 27 and Frank Smith - CEO of Matchroom Boxing who promote AJ - says a fight with Joshua is possible. He told Boxing News: "Do you know what fight I love? If he comes through his warm-up, Deontay Wilder. READ MORE IN boxing FUR REAL DEAL Fury's manager refuses to rule out return as AJ nears 'amazing' fight deal "This sport is about narrative. It's about buying into fights that people have interest in and that's a fight that everyone would still have interest in. "Regardless of whether it didn't happen five years ago, people still want to see it now. So hopefully he can come through his fight." Dillian Whyte was mentioned as another potential option for Joshua - who won their bout in 2015 by stoppage. They were due to rematch in 2023 but it was cancelled after Whyte, 37, returned an "adverse finding" in his drug testing. 3 CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS He has since boxed in Gibraltar and Ireland after blaming the failed drug test on a contaminated supplement. Whyte was due to return on Fabio Wardley's undercard in Ipswich but he pulled out to focus on a summer showdown with Lawrence Okolie. 'We never know' - Tyson Fury refuses to rule out comeback as Anthony Joshua nears new 'amazing' fight deal And Smith - alongside Whyte's promoter - ruled out a fight with Joshua as a result. Smith told iFL TV: "No Joshua." Joshua, 35, recently underwent surgery on an elbow injury that has kept him sidelined since defeat to Dubois, 27. And with Tyson Fury, 36, still retired off the back of two losses to Oleksandr Usyk, 38, AJ has been left to look elsewhere for an opponent. Smith added: "There's so many options out there. It just also depends on what he wants to do, if he wants to go for the world title again. "What does he want to chase? Tyson Fury is a name that obviously we've spoken about a million times but it gets boring after a while saying the same thing. "So let's get him back in the gym, get him fit, get him active, get him ready and then we'll go from there."
