Community offers ‘shramdaan' for Manorama river's revival in Gonda
This initiative embodies Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's vision to revive ecologically and culturally vital rivers across Uttar Pradesh.
The Manorama river, stretching 115 kilometres, originates from Tirre Tal in Gonda and flows into the Kuwano river in Basti district. According to ancient texts, the river is named after Manorama, the daughter of sage Uddalak, and holds spiritual significance as it flows near Makhoda Dham, a revered site.
The campaign commenced in Sisai Bahlolpur village, Itiyathok block, where more than 200 individuals — including villagers, youth, gram pradhans, public representatives and NGOs from Pandri Kripal, Itiyathok, Rupaidih, and Mujehna blocks — participated. Their collective involvement underscored the focus on public partnership in environmental conservation.
DM Neha Sharma said, "The Manorama river is not just a water source, but a symbol of our cultural memory and co-existence with nature.
Its revival is linked to the pride of Gonda, and both the administration and public share the responsibility of carrying this mission forward." A senior official confirmed that a comprehensive plan was drawn up to revive the river. This includes desilting, removal of encroachments, and restoring the natural water flow between Gonda-Balrampur Road and Tadi Lal village.
JCBs and Pokland machines were deployed to begin the initial cleaning work.
To enhance biodiversity and restore greenery, native trees such as peepal, neem, and pakad will be planted along the riverbanks. The forest department has been tasked with plantation activities, while the irrigation department will assess the river's course and technical structure. A coordinated system involving multiple departments has been put in place to ensure smooth execution.
Officials stated the initiative is being structured as a community-led movement. Gram panchayats, social groups and volunteers are being encouraged to participate in what is envisioned as a campaign for water conservation, ecological revival and cultural awareness.

Rakshabandhan a symbol of duty and harmony too: Yogi
Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath extended greetings and best wishes to the people of the state on the occasion of Rakshabandhan to be celebrated on Saturday. In a message released on Friday, the Chief Minister said Rakshabandhan is a festival symbolising the mutual love, affection and trust between brothers and sisters. "It represents duty, sacrifice, social unity and harmony. While it is a festival celebrating the bond between siblings, it also honours the teacher-student tradition in India," he said. Explaining the root of that tradition, the CM Yogi said that Rakshabandhan is celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Shrawan. In the tradition of ashrams, it was customary to tie protective threads to patrons and disciples after study and rituals during the month of Shravan, a practice that continues in the form of Rakshabandhan. "This festival also serves to enhance love and brotherhood in society and highlights the importance of charity," the Chief Minister said. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath (@myogiadityanath) took cognisance of the road accident, expressed condolences… — Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) August 8, 2025 The sudden fall of the tree brought instantaneous pandemonium and a long traffic jam. Police and the district administration immediately initiated a rescue operation to clear the road and free people trapped. Witnesses testified to a scene of pandemonium as passengers hollered for assistance, with some trying to get out through windows of buses. In one of the poignant moments of tragedy, a woman caught up in the bus was heard begging bystanders who were taking videos of the situation. "This is a matter of life and death here, and you are taping. If you had helped clear the branches of the tree, we would have been able to exit," she begged. According to reports, the crowd stepped in, pushing out the person taking the video, and assisted the rescue efforts to extricate her. The bus was traveling from Barabanki to Haidergarh when the accident took place, according to authorities. Five deaths have been confirmed by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), with four of them being women. The bus driver and two female teachers are among the dead and had been on leave to attend training but were apparently headed to school at the instruction of the Basic Education Officer (BO). Rescue efforts and relief operations were delayed by the heavy rain. Cutting tools were utilized by teams to cut sections of the tree and extricate the stranded passengers. All the injured were taken to nearby hospitals to receive medical attention. The authorities have informed that traffic along the affected route has now been restored to normal. There is an ongoing investigation into the horrific accident.
