Karun Nair was elegance personified while serving a timely reminder to the Gautam Gambhir-led team management with a classy unbeaten 186 as India A cruised to 409 for 3 against a below-par England Lions on the opening day of the first 'Unofficial' Test here on Friday (May 30, 2025).
While Nair is known to bat either at No. 4 or below in first-class cricket, he looked at ease during his unbeaten 246-ball knock which made the Lions bowlers, including their Test star Rehan Ahmed, look completely pedestrian.

India A batters made the best use of loose deliveries but the quality of Lions bowling attack and nature of the track might not be an appropriate reflection of what can be expected in Test matches.
The Bengaluru man, who now plays for Vidarbha, used his extensive experience of playing for English County Northamptonshire during his 24th first-class ton.
Karun Nair, Sarfaraz Khan shine for India A
His innings had 24 fours and one six but it couldn't have come at a more opportune time as Gambhir frets over his batting combination for the opening Test against England at Leeds, starting June 20.
Sarfaraz Khan (92 off 119 balls) blended a bit of muscle and a lot of cheekiness but missed out on a three-figure mark after doing all the hard work.
The duo added 181 runs for the third wicket stand and then Dhruv Jurel (82 batting, 104 balls) made merry during another 177-run stand for the unbroken fourth wicket alliance.
Call it irony, just like Nair had pipped Sarfaraz as the extra batter in the Test squad, he also overshadowed the Mumbai man on a flat deck where the Lions attack didn't have enough teeth to trouble some of the senior India stars. Conceding 51 boundaries and three sixes in 90 overs doesn't make for a great reading.

Yashasvi Jaiswal (24 off 55 balls) played out the first hour but didn't utilize the start while Abhimanyu Easwaran (8), who should consider himself massively lucky to have got another shot at Test team, showed why he isn't cut out for the big league.
The Canterbury County ground pitch had a greenish tinge but there was hardly any lateral movement on offer. Nair had extra time to play his shots and was severe on all bowlers with a lot of shots square of the wicket.
Rehan, the England Test leg-spinner, was extremely ordinary as he was clobbered for 95 runs in 16 overs. Sarfaraz, in fact, hit him inside out for a boundary to complete his fifty and also hit him straight for a maximum, and against pacers, he used the bounce to play the ramp shot over slips for useful runs.
Nair was severe on anything that was pitched short and looked regal whenever he rocked back to play the pull shot. When off-spinner Dan Mousley bowled, he repeatedly played the reverse sweep with minimal effort.

The duo farmed the strike without much ado and when Sarfaraz lazily chased a wide delivery from Hull down the leg-side, even Lions bowlers didn't expect a wicket.
But the joy was short-lived as there was no taking the foot from the pedal from either Nair or Jurel, who continued to show disdain for home team bowlers.
Brief scores: India A: 409/3 in 90 overs (Karun Nair 186 batting; Sarfaraz Khan 92, Dhruv Jurel 82 batting; Josh Hull 2/51).

Monty Panesar drops bombshell on Virat Kohli's Test retirement: 'They said... don't expect to play all the five'

Virat Kohli had taken the cricketing world by surprise by announcing his retirement from Test cricket more than a month before the five-match series between India and England was to get underway, and less than a week after a similar announcement from captain Rohit Sharma. read more Former England left-arm spinner Monty Panesar was among those who expected Virat Kohli to feature in the five-Test series in England and continue playing in the format thereafter. Reuters/AP Former England left-arm spinner Monty Panesar has made an explosive claim on Virat Kohli's Test retirement, stating that the batting superstar decided to bail out of the upcoming tour of England in the last minute after coming to know that his place in the Test team was no longer a no-brainer. Panesar speculated that Kohli might have received a hint on the possibility of being dropped midway during the tour, and decided to retire from the format in order to give some of the younger members of the squad and fringe players a chance. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Panesar expresses surprise at Kohli suddenly slamming brakes on Test career 'I think he was definitely going to play. I think England were expecting, everyone was expecting him to play. I'm surprised he's kind of like bailed out. But maybe the fact that outside off-stump, he's just thinking, well, you know, they may have had a word with him,' Panesar told Hindustan Times. 'They said, look, if you don't score well in the first couple of Test matches, don't expect to play all the five. So, he's probably thinking, well, I'll just call it a day and give the youngsters a go,' he added. Kohli had taken the cricketing world by surprise by announcing his retirement from Tests last month, more than a month before the five-match India-England series was to get underway and less than a week after captain Rohit Sharma bid goodbye to the format. Both Rohit and Kohli had endured a disappointing run in the recent tour of Australia, where the former scored just 31 runs in three Tests and the latter's form quickly nosedived after an unbeaten 100 in Perth. However, while Rohit's days as a Test cricketer appeared numbered after the conclusion of the tour, especially after he had voluntarily opted out of the fifth and final Test in Sydney, Kohli was expected to continue for another two-three years, despite his off-side weakness that was heavily exploited Down Under by Pat Cummins and his gang of pacers. Shubman Gill has since been appointed Rohit's successor as Test captain, with Rishabh Pant as his deputy. However, it remains to be seen who gets to bat at the hallowed No 4 spot – a position that Kohli had made his own for more than a decade following the legendary Sachin Tendulkar's retirement in 2013. Desperate PBKS Star Yuzvendra Chahal 'Ready To Take Injections' To Play IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 vs MI

Will Yuzvendra Chahal play the all important IPL 2025 Qualifier 2? The star Punjab Kings spinner has been missing from action after he played a match against Rajasthan Royals on May 18. Since then, a finger injury has seen him missing from action. A rampant Mumbai Indians will present a stern test of character for a rattled Punjab Kings in a virtual semifinal when the two teams face off in Qualifier 2 of the Indian Premier League on Sunday. An eight-wicket hammering at the hands of Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a one-sided Qualifier 1 may have eroded some amount of confidence in Shreyas Iyer 's Punjab Kings, who are now in a do-or-die situation as they dream of winning a maiden IPL trophy. On the other hand, Mumbai Indians took another stride towards a potential sixth title with a comprehensive victory, which knocked out title favourites Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator. According to a report in TOI, quoting sources, Chahal is "ready to take injections" in order to play the Qualifier 2. History tells Mumbai Indians know their way around these lanes of IPL knockouts better than either of the other two teams left in the competition and that certainly tilt the scales in favour of Hardik Pandya 's side. But coach Mahela Jayawardene 's challenge would be to keep his troops organised which the former Sri Lankan captain has been able to do exceedingly well after taking over a side that finished at the bottom in the previous season. For the the Iyer- Ricky Ponting pair, the task would be to ensure their players put behind the crushing defeat in their last game and channel their energies to fight the fires that have erupted particularly in the bowling line-up, where Arshdeep Singh is carrying extra pressure. The absence of Marco Jansen and unavailability of IPL's highest-ever wicket-taker in Yuzvendra Chahal was evident when PBKS scrambled to find options to apply pressure on a spicy wicket in Mullanpur against RCB. But at the same time, PBKS camp could feel that that 'one bad day', collectively for their batters and especially in the knockouts, is now behind them and that it did not rob them of an opportunity to make the final. PBKS would also know the margin of error is getting leaner looking at how Rohit Sharma pulverised GT's bowling attack and set up the win for MI, riding on a couple of early lifelines to produce a match-winning knock. A holistic view would perhaps leave one without spotting any chink in Mumbai Indians' armour who have fired on all cylinders. They would continue to lean on their rich blend of Indian players including Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma and Pandya to come together. MI will also be particularly pleased with how their new recruits Jonny Bairstow and Richard Gleeson eased into the heat of the competition to deliver their bits, which at the end, proved vital in crushing GT on a batting-friendly pitch. After all, the outcome of the contest at the Narendra Modi Stadium could well be decided over how the two bowling attacks execute their plans since the surfaces here have regularly produced high-scoring games. Jasprit Bumrah's exploits and a clever deployment of the ace Indian bowler across the 20 overs have been one of MI's biggest strengths this season. While Bumrah's accuracy and guile has not allowed the batters to score runs off him easily, PBKS would also want to draw from their win over MI earlier this season when despite his measly returns, they were able to go over the line with seven wickets in hand. Suryakumar's unmatched consistency with the bat met with a sparkling knock from Tilak Varma against the Titans but for PBKS, it will be important to have their explosive opening pair of Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya finding their rhythm to set the tone. Ashutosh Sharma lands in England at 7:30 AM, then smashes 70-ball ton after walking in at 17/3 in sensational club debut

Just hours after landing in the UK, India's rising T20 talent Ashutosh Sharma gave Wigan Cricket Club an unforgettable welcome gift: a debut century that provided the side with a much-needed recovery after a top-order collapse in the Liverpool and District Cricket Competition, part of the ECB Premier League structure. Signed recently by Wigan for the 2025 season, Ashutosh made an instant mark in his first outing against Formby CC, walking out to bat at No.5 with his team tottering at 17-3 in 9.5 overs. From there, he orchestrated a stunning counterattack. Teaming up with opener Aveen Dalugod, Ashutosh built a match-defining 153-run partnership that rescued Wigan from early disaster. His innings was a showcase of controlled aggression and composure under pressure. Ashutosh struck eight boundaries and cleared the ropes six times, finishing with a strike rate of 136.99. He brought up his hundred off just 70 deliveries. However, his dismissal in the 34th over triggered another collapse. Wigan slipped from 170-3 to 195-7 in the span of seven overs, with Ashutosh's exit marking a turning point once again, this time for the worse. Remarkably, Ashutosh's performance came on the same day he arrived in the UK. He landed at 7:30 AM, and took part in the match hours later. The 25-year-old had just wrapped up his IPL 2025 campaign with Delhi Capitals, having scored 204 runs at an average of 29.14 and a strike rate of 160.62. Delhi's failure to make the playoffs opened the door for this club stint in England, and Ashutosh wasted no time in grabbing the opportunity. He had previously made waves in the 2024 IPL season with Punjab Kings, hammering 189 runs at a strike rate of 167.25. Delhi acquired him in the 2025 auction, and his explosive batting remained a bright spark in an otherwise underwhelming campaign for the franchise. Though he has yet to register a century in professional white-ball cricket across 14 List A games and 44 T20s, Ashutosh does own a first-class hundred in eight appearances, where he averages 28.46 with a top score of 123. He's not alone in flying the Indian flag in English club cricket this summer. KS Bharat, unsold in the 2025 IPL auction, signed up with Dulwich CC and cracked 134 off 108 balls on debut against Esher CC earlier this month. India A team is also in England, as they took on the England Lions in the first unofficial Test ahead of the five-match Test series. Karun Nair, also a part of Delhi Capitals alongside Ashutosh, smashed a double century for India A in the game.
