Sterling rises as risk assets rally on Israel-Iran ceasefire
Sterling climbed against the euro and the dollar on Tuesday, lifted by a rally in risk assets after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said on Tuesday he had ordered the military to strike Tehran in response to what he said were missiles fired by Iran in a violation of the truce deal. Iran denied violating it, saying there had been no launch of missiles towards Israel in recent hours.
During times of global uncertainty, investors often retreat from sterling - viewed as a risk-sensitive currency - in favour of traditional safe havens such as the Swiss franc, Japanese yen and, more recently, the euro.
The single European currency fell 0.40% to 85.23 pence. It hit 85.74 pence on Monday, its highest level since April 23.
The safe-haven status of the dollar has been under scrutiny on concerns over U.S. fiscal policy, and potential shifts in global reserve currency preferences.
The pound was up 0.55% versus the greenback at $1.3601 . It hit $1.36325 last week, its highest level since February 2022.
Recent soft economic data and a more dovish tone from the Bank of England have also pressured the British currency.
Analysts said the BoE's vote last week to keep rates steady - with three dissenters in favour of cutting them immediately - suggests that the Monetary Policy Committee is becoming increasingly concerned with the growth outlook and the performance of Britain's labour market.
British business activity expanded modestly but employers cut jobs more quickly, according to a survey released on Monday.
"Rate setters view the current policy stance as restrictive and are ready to ease as inflation pressures fade, but we must be prepared for this to take time," said Dean Turner, chief euro zone and UK economist at UBS Global Wealth Management's Chief Investment Office.
"We expect the BoE to stick with its quarterly cadence of cuts and deliver 25 bps reductions at its August and November meetings, taking the base rate to 3.75% by year-end."

Trump's focus on the Middle East could translate to less US involvement in Nato
In April 1949, at the beginning of the Cold War, Nato was formed in Washington. The organisation's first secretary general was British – Hastings Ismay – formerly Winston Churchill's chief military adviser in the Second World War. This US-UK link was seen as a key pillar of the 'Atlantic Alliance'. Ismay humorously defined the UK's Nato mission as 'to keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down'. Things have changed a bit since then. The Russians are still 'out' of Western Europe, but the Ukraine invasion means Nato nations see Moscow as a growing threat. The Americans are still 'in' although Donald Trump's unpredictable presidency often takes ever more unpredictable turns. The US President, who once boasted about 'no new wars', decided to bomb Iran just a few days before this week's crucial Nato summit in The Hague. America's allies were informed rather than consulted. Some predicted that an American attack on Iran could split the alliance, although that seems unlikely right now. Either way, the European pillar of Nato must make do with less America and perhaps a not-always-reliable US president. That, and the continuing Ukraine war, has forced increased European defence spending. In Germany, military spending is consequently not 'down' but pushing hard to go 'up' with a new sense of urgency in Berlin and elsewhere. Mr Trump's decision to join Israel's attacks on Iran reinforces this urgent rearmament. Mr Trump's focus is not primarily on the European continent, and having spoken previously of ending the Ukraine war in 24 hours, his interest in European security seems to have further diminished. Some military commentators believe Russian President Vladimir Putin hopes one big push before winter will consolidate Russian occupation of Ukrainian territory and he can dictate a hard peace. Others think given the state of Russia's economy, Ukraine will fight on and European rearmament will provide deterrence against a wider conflict. What is certain is that Nato nations broadly agree to Mr Trump's demands to spend 5 per cent of gross domestic product on defence, although precisely when that will be achieved and what it means is not clear. The Hague summit therefore is one of the most important Nato meetings in years. It was planned to address the hard truth that for too long European politicians have relied too much on the US defence umbrella. Military experts have complained for years about Western Europe's lack of preparation for conflict. I spoke a few days ago to one such expert, the British general Richard Shirreff, formerly Nato's deputy supreme allied commander Europe. In 2016, Gen Shirreff published a fictional predictive account of a future conflict entitled War with Russia: An Urgent Warning. Following the full Russian invasion of Ukraine, Europe's Nato members at The Hague are at last taking up Gen Shirreff's main theme and committing to higher spending. This summit therefore is hugely significant both for a sense of unity in public and for the very private conversations on how Western Europe will come to terms with Mr Trump and the new world order – or disorder, following the US attack on Iran's nuclear sites, and Iran's subsequent strike on the US air base at Al Udeid in Qatar. Mr Trump showed at the G7 meeting in Canada that he likes photocalls and short meetings with world leaders but loathes long and detailed multilateral meetings. Increased spending commitments may be good enough for a public show of Nato solidarity. But those private conversations between Nato leaders could be problematic. First, the US commitment to the destruction of Iran's nuclear programme means the Trump administration's focus is for the foreseeable future not on Europe at all. Iran's promise of retaliation, possibly against US bases, embassies and personnel, particularly in the Middle East, could further embroil Washington in what some fear could be another American 'forever war', like Iraq or Afghanistan. Second, disruption to oil and gas supplies – including oil sales from Iran to China, and concerns about potential disruption to oil fields in neighbouring Arab nations – could rock the world economy and expose further tensions between the Trump administration and America's allies. The main Nato discussions in The Hague appear to have been cut short to accommodate the US President. The final communique is expected to be brief. Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte is said to have a good relationship with Mr Trump, but Mr Rutte has also suggested Russia could attack a Nato member within five years, so any diminishing American interest in Europe potentially implies diminishing deterrence. All these threats explain why Nato has expanded hugely since 1949. Nations formerly in the Soviet orbit – Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia – are now Nato members. Traditionally neutral countries have also joined – Finland in 2023 and Sweden in 2024. Nato's 32 members therefore seem determined to cope with the challenges ahead, including perhaps the continuing loss of American interest. The mood in The Hague recalls the old wisdom that if you want peace, prepare for war. Nato is in that preparatory phase right now. But one unanswered question keeps recurring. Has the US destroyed Iran's enriched uranium, or – as some reports suggest – was it removed and hidden before the B2 bomber planes attacked?

Oil slumps, shares rally on Iran-Israel ceasefire
Oil tumbled nearly 4%, global shares surged and the dollar dropped on Tuesday as markets took heart from a ceasefire between Israel and Iran and shrugged off what US President Donald Trump said were violations by both sides. Brent futures had already slid 7% on Monday and US shares jumped after Iran made only a token retaliation against a US base to an attack over the weekend, and signalled it was done for now. With the immediate threat to the vital Strait of Hormuz shipping lane seemingly over, the Brent benchmark touched its lowest since June 11 and was last at $68.81 a barrel, down 3.7%. US crude futures dropped 3.7% to $65.91 a barrel. 'Investors mostly shrugged at what appeared on the surface a seismic geopolitical event over the weekend and those who kept their nerve and held off from de-risking have so far been proven right,' said Kenneth Broux, head of corporate research FX and rates at Societe Generale. While the ceasefire so far has seemed shaky - Trump said he was 'not happy' with either side for violating the truce, particularly with Israel - risk assets held onto their earlier gains. S&P 500 futures rose 0.8% and Nasdaq futures were 1% higher. Europe's Stoxx 600 gained 1.3%, with travel stocks including airlines surging 3.8%, while oil and gas names shed 2%. Earlier in the day, MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan jumped 2.2%, while Japan's Nikkei rallied 1.1%. A further sign of the sudden improvement in sentiment is that emerging market countries - from Mexico to Kazakhstan via Turkey - have rushed to issue debt in the past two days, as have many companies. But the positive news did not spill over into the bond market where the focus instead was on Germany's draft budget, which includes record investment, requiring higher borrowing. The impact was particularly felt on longer dated bonds. Germany's 30-year yield rose 8 basis points to 3.06% and its 10-year yield rose 5 bps to 2.60%. Those moves rippled across markets, with the US 10-year yield up 3 bps at 4.35% and Britain's 10-year yield up 2 bps to 4.51% , though increasing bets on US rate cuts this year kept US bonds in check. Investors are also keeping a close eye on remarks from Federal Reserve policymakers, who in aggregate have been nervous in recent months about giving any signs that rate cuts are imminent. However, Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman said on Monday the time to cut interest rates was getting nearer as risks to the job market may be on the rise. That followed Fed Governor Christopher Waller saying on Friday he would consider a rate cut at the July 29-30 meeting, though Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic told Reuters in a story published on Tuesday that the Fed need not cut interest rates with companies planning to raise prices later this year. Fed Chair Jerome Powell will appear before Congress later on Tuesday and, so far, has been more cautious about a near-term easing. Markets still only imply around a 20% chance the Fed will cut at its next meeting on July 30, but a September cut is near to fully priced. News of the ceasefire saw the dollar extend an overnight retreat and slip 0.8% to 144.9 yen, having come off a six-week high of 148 yen on Monday. The euro rose 0.2% to $1.1602 on Tuesday, having gained 0.5% overnight. The yen and euro benefited from the slide in oil prices as both the EU and Japan rely heavily on imports of oil and liquefied natural gas, while the US is a net exporter. The risk-on mood saw gold prices ease 1.4% to $3,319 an ounce. Copper prices hit their highest in almost two weeks on Tuesday as the dollar fell and the yuan strengthened after US President Donald Trump's announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. Three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange was up 0.7% at $9,730 a metric tone in official open-outcry trading after touching $9,760.50 for its highest since June 11 earlier in the session. Global markets largely ignored signs that the ceasefire could be fragile, with Trump accusing both Israel and Iran of violating the agreement on Tuesday. The metals market's attention was on continuing outflows from copper stocks in LME-registered warehouses, which combined with large holdings of cash copper contracts and warrants - title documents conferring ownership - to inflate premiums for near-term contracts. British Safety Council held its annual Gala Dinner on 19 June to celebrate the winners of its International Safety Awards 2025, at the Royal Garden Hotel, Kensington, London. This is the 67th year the awards have taken place and the 65th year of a gala dinner. The prestigious event, which this year was sponsored by HSI Donesafe, was hosted by adventurer James Cracknell OBE, the celebrated former Olympic Rower, and included speeches by British Safety Council CEO, Mike Robinson, its chairman Peter McGettrick, and Dr. Tim Marsh, world-renowned Safety Psychologist and MD of Anker and Marsh. The event combined a formal presentation ceremony with a dinner and evening of live entertainment. The International Safety Awards recognise and celebrate organisations from around the world that have demonstrated to the satisfaction of the scheme's independent judges their commitment to preventing workplace injuries and work-related ill health during the previous calendar year. The awards also acknowledge organisations that have shown commitment to wellbeing and mental health at work. In 2025, 789 organisations won an International Safety Award.
