Serial rapist who drugged and filmed 10 women in London and China jailed for life
A PhD student suspected of being one of the UK's worst sex offenders has been jailed for life after drugging and raping 10 women in London and China.
Zhenhao Zou, 28, had filmed his harrowing attacks on his unconscious victims. Only two of the women have been identified and the other eight yet to be traced.
The Chinese national, who had been studying at University College London, had kept a trophy box of women's belongings, which included a red lipstick, earrings and different hair bobbles and clip-on hair extensions.
His victims have told of being 'haunted' by his attacks on them, with one saying she had 'lost faith in human beings', and another adding that she had been left with severe physical and psychological distress'.
Since his conviction, 24 women have contacted the Metropolitan Police following publicity in the media around Zou's trial to say they think they may have been attacked by him.
After a month-long trial, Zou, who was most recently living in Elephant and Castle, southeast London, was found guilty of raping three women in London and another seven in China between September 2019 and May 2023.
He was convicted of 11 counts of rape, with two of the offences relating to one victim. During his trial, jurors in the case were forced to watch the disturbing footage, with some left in tears.
Zou was also convicted of three counts of voyeurism, 10 of possession of an extreme pornographic image, one of false imprisonment and three of possession of a controlled drug with intent to commit a sexual offence, namely butanediol.
He will now serve a life sentence with a minimum term of 24 years behind bars, after being branded a 'sexual predator' by the judge.
Jurors heard that Zou comes from a wealthy family, and was able to afford thousands a month in rent to live in an expensive new-rise building as an international student. His flat was full of designer clothes, and he wore a Rolex and had undergone cosmetic procedures including a hair transplant and facial surgery.
In a victim impact statement, one of the women he attacked said she felt 'fear' towards Zou, saying his family is 'very powerful' in China.
While he appeared to those who met him as a 'smart and charming young man', prosecutors said he is in fact 'a persistent sexual predator, a voyeur and a rapist'.
Using WeChat and dating apps, and also using the name Pakho online, Zou would often befriend fellow Chinese students before inviting them for drinks at his flat, where he would drug and rape them.
The student first moved to Belfast in 2017 to study mechanical engineering at Queen's University before heading to London in 2019 to do a master's degree and then a PhD at UCL. Eight of his rapes took place at an unknown location in China.
His crimes began to be uncovered in November 2023, when a woman went to police to allege that she had been attacked by Zou.
There was not enough evidence to bring a criminal charge over her claim, but when Zou's phone was seized officers found disturbing videos of him raping unconscious women, and pipettes and sedating drugs in his flat.
One of the two victims who has been identified by police told the jury she was raped after Zou pushed her to drink excessive amounts of alcohol and would not let her leave his flat in Elephant and Castle in May 2023.
The second, who is now living in China, said she was also raped by Zou, in his student flat near Russell Square in October 2021, when she was unconscious.
Police found hundreds of hours of disturbing videos and photos that he kept, around half of which are thought to have been filmed in the UK and half in China.
The case has chilling parallels with Reynhard Sinaga, 41, who was jailed for life in January 2020 at Manchester Crown Court after being found guilty of 159 counts of sexual offences against 48 different men.
He also befriended his victims and invited them back to his flat, before drugging and sexually assaulting them.
One of his victims said: 'I experienced for the first time a loss of consciousness. I opened my eyes for a few seconds during the sexual assault in his room, he was thrusting violently against my body.
'I was completely powerless and could only use all my strength to tell him I was menstruating and demand he stop his actions.
'Although I lost consciousness just moments later, his face in that moment will clearly stay in my mind forever. As a result, I now experience severe physical and psychological distress.'
The woman also told of feeling 'waves of nausea and disgust' after she was attacked.
She added: 'I know words will never fully convey the depth of this wound. But one thing is certain, what happened that night is etched into my soul forever. His face, his expression – they will never leave me. I will never forgive him.'
UK detectives have said the Chinese authorities were 'responsive and helpful' over the investigation into Zou, although no properties where he lived in China have been searched even though many of his crimes took place on Chinese soil.
After Zou's trial, they began discussions with China about whether social media appeals to potential victims could be made on WeChat and Little Red Book, which are more commonly used in the country.
Zou was convicted of rapes that he committed in China in a UK court because foreign nationals living in Britain can be convicted of crimes committed abroad if the act is an offence in both countries.

Billionaires' Row 'tramp', 57, banned from Hyde Park over his 'swan whispering' after he rammed a woman with his bicycle who filmed him 'stroking, cuddling and kissing' the birds
An eccentric homeless bird lover known as the 'Swan Whisperer' who lives in a doorway on Billionaires' Row in London has been banned from Hyde Park after a fight over a swan. Anders Fernstedt, 57, rammed a woman with his bicycle as she filmed him 'stroking, cuddling and kissing' the birds, then attacked a swan volunteer who tried to apprehend him. The pair had warned the Swedish botanist and writer that his actions were spreading avian flu amid an outbreak, a court heard. Fernstedt was found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm by a jury at Southwark Crown Court and was yesterday given a 15-month community order. Virginia Grey and Jon Ferguson had approached him on March 30, 2023, by the pond in Hyde Park after he had ignored multiple warnings and continued to touch the swans. Judge Mr Recorder David Etherington KC told him: 'You have beliefs about interacting with and touching swans and showing them to tourists to understand the bird population. 'The sad thing is all three of you have an interest in the welfare of birds but different views about how this should be achieved.' Fernstedt called Ms Grey 'Hitler' and 'evil' then knocked her over with his bicycle. When Mr Ferguson tried to tackle him the pair tussled on the ground before the Swede kicked his ribcage and torso, the court heard. 'He [Mr Ferguson] required stitches to the inside of the mouth which had bled which caused him soreness and blurred vision and he required painkillers for the bruising to the ribs,' the judge said. Judge Etherington said he found Fernstedt to be an eccentric man but not suffering from a mental illness. He handed him a restraining order preventing him from entering Kensington Gardens in Hyde Park or contacting Mr Ferguson and Ms Grey for two years. Fernstedt, who defended himself in court, has been living outside Rutland Gate in Knightsbridge, home to Britain's most expensive property at £200million. He has set up his own shelter in the large doorway of a 45-bedroom mansion, complete with a bed, plants, books and designer clothes donated by wealthy neighbours. He claims he became homeless in 2023 after a fall from his bicycle and because the property where he had been living was sold. Westminster Council determined he had intentionally made himself homeless, however. The judge told Fernstedt to reflect on his lifestyle and warned he should try to get back into the working world. 'You are obviously an intelligent man, you clearly have had a responsible work history and it is unfortunate that seems to have gone away,' he told him. 'Don't fall in love with this way of life, because when you get older and need help* try not to fall in love with this way of life, it is important you try to get out of it actually and get yourself on a more certain footing.' Ms Grey, who admitted she had sent imaged of Fernstedt interfering with the birds to police, told the court she had been 'very scared' of her assailant. Fernstedt, who gave evidence wearing a navy suit and purple tie with a long grey beard and his long hair tied up in a bun, claimed he had not wanted to hit Mr Ferguson and described the pair as 'two of the worst Londoners I have ever met.' He said he would in future 'try to modulate the boiling kettle aspect of life.'

Michael Gove: Whitehall officials tried to suppress grooming gangs scandal
Lord Gove has claimed that Whitehall officials tried to suppress details of the grooming gangs scandal. The former Cabinet minister said he overruled government and council officials who were seeking to block the publication of information about a victim in Rotherham. As the then education secretary, he said he rejected the attempted legal action on the basis that it was better to tell 'the truth'. Lord Gove also warned that the proposed structure of a new national inquiry into the scandal might limit its ability to scrutinise the failings of police and government at a national level. His comments, made on GB News, come days after the publication of a report by Baroness Casey which found that police and councils avoided pursuing child sex grooming gangs for fear of being viewed as racist. Even though there was evidence that a disproportionate number of Asian men had been responsible in such cases, their role was covered up by successive governments and authorities over concerns about raising community tensions, the review concluded. Lord Gove recalled a request by Rotherham council to block an investigation by Andrew Norfolk, a reporter for The Times newspaper, into the scandal in 2011 by mounting a legal challenge against his attempt to publish details of a 'particularly tragic case'. He said he had examined the material alongside Dominic Cummings, who was working in the Department for Education at the time, and some other staff. 'We contacted Rotherham council, and we said: 'Yes, we will intervene in this case, but on behalf of The Times, because it's absolutely vital that the truth be told',' Lord Gove said. 'It was absolutely the case that there were those who thought that it was appropriate for us not to intervene. 'So the documents in question revealed some details about one particular victim, and it was argued by the council, and by some officials who were sympathetic to their case, that revealing everything about the case might mean that other potential victims, other family members, might be adversely affected. 'And there was also an argument that the council itself was making improvements, and that as a result of these improvements being made, that would be imperilled potentially if there were adverse publicity. 'I think those arguments were made in good faith, but my view, Dominic Cummings's view, was that it was far more important that we told the truth.' He said he adopted the same approach to serious case reviews into the failings of councils, which were heavily censored until he intervened to require 'the greatest possible transparency'. Lord Gove said a proposed national inquiry into the scandal should be 'much more than what it might appear to be at the moment'. 'It appears that the Government may default and make the national inquiry simply a sort of umbrella for lots of specific local inquiries,' he said. 'There are as many as 50 towns and cities across the country in which these gangs have operated or continue to operate, there are failures in policing at a national level that need to be addressed. It is also the case that decisions made within the Home Office and other government departments do need to be scrutinised.' He added: 'One of the things about this whole story, right from the very beginning, has been that there have been people who, for admittedly noble reasons, because they didn't want to see the details being exploited by the very far-Right, have tried to manage the information.'

‘Unofficial Uber' driver guilty of kidnapping, attempted rape and sexual assault
A driver has been found guilty for a second time after posing as an 'unofficial Uber' to pick up 'vulnerable and intoxicated' women he could abuse. Graham Head, 68, had latex gloves, condoms, Viagra tablets and a balaclava in his silver Mercedes estate when he was arrested in November 2022. In his home, business cards advertising him as a 'N- Uber driver' were emblazoned with the slogan 'Safe and Reliable – For All Occasions' underneath one of his phone numbers. In July 2023, Head, of Pevensey, East Sussex, was handed a 23-year sentence for the kidnap and attempted rape of a 25-year-old woman, along with assault by penetration of a 19-year-old woman. In November 2024, the Court of Appeal overturned the conviction following a complaint from Head relating to the judge who presided over the original trial. On Thursday, he was convicted of all charges again by a jury of seven men and five women after eight hours of deliberation at Lewes Crown Court. During the trial, jurors heard that Head was a 'sexual predator' who 'slipped up' the night he was arrested by police. He claimed that he offered the 25-year-old a lift home but did not touch her and never met his other alleged victim. Prosecutor Paul Jarvis KC said: 'The defendant is a sexual predator. Basing himself in Pevensey and ostensibly working as an unofficial Uber driver or taxi driver. 'He was also looking for vulnerable young women who he could sexually abuse. 'He carried Viagra and condoms with him, either on his person or in his car, as well as latex gloves. He would use the latex gloves to minimise the risk of leaving traces of his DNA on his victims.' Head had two mobile phones and was 'savvy enough' to know that if he kept them on while he was driving, the network provider could record his movements so kept them in flight mode while he was searching for victims, the court was told. The two attacks are said to have taken place in the early hours of August 19 2022, in Hove Park and November 18 2022 outside the alleged victim's home. Mr Jarvis said: 'Now in August 2022, she (the first victim) was 19 years old. When she was, we say, intoxicated and vulnerable in the early hours of the morning the defendant sexually assaulted her in Hove Park.' 'In November 2022, she (the second victim) was 25 years old. When she was also vulnerable and intoxicated in the early hours of the morning, Mr Head kidnapped her and sexually assaulted her in his car and then drove off leaving her distressed on the roadside. 'On both occasions, the defendant was driving his grey Mercedes estate motor vehicle with the registration number L21 GRH.' The 25-year-old was able to remember the 'L21' portion of Head's number plate, which led to police pulling his car over and arresting him the same night, jurors heard. 'He slipped up on November 19 2022 in two respects. First because his victim was alert enough to be able to memorise part of the licence plate for the police to be able to identify his car when they saw it,' said Mr Jarvis. The 25-year-old had been on a night out and had consumed alcohol and cocaine on the night in question, the court heard. Her account is that a man pulled up alongside her and told her he was an Uber driver who had just finished his shift but would give her a free ride home. Journeys from Middle Street, in Brighton, where the victim left Monarch Bar, to the victim's home address were found after analysis of the satnav in Head's Mercedes. Mr Jarvis continued: 'He offered to give her a life home but his real plan was to drive around until he was satisfied she was fast asleep so he could sexually assault and rape her. 'He drove close to her home address and tried to rape her in the back seat of his car but she came to and kicked him away.' The 25-year-old has since died and did not give evidence at the trial. Head will be sentenced on August 22 2025.
