Waubonsie Valley's Danyella Mporokoso is the 2024-25 Girls Basketball Player of the Year for Aurora, Elgin, Naperville
Watching the 5-foot-7 point guard in action is witnessing an athlete mastering her craft one play at a time, usually while putting on a clinic. As for the source of Mporokoso's enthusiasm, it's as simplistic as it is contagious.
'I just love the sport,' she said. 'I love playing basketball.
'When I'm on the court, that's when I'm at my happiest. It's just a privilege to be on the court, so I think that's where I get my excitement from, just the love for the sport.'
Mporokoso, the 2024-25 Beacon-News/Courier-News/Naperville Sun Girls Basketball Player of the Year, has used that love to improve not only her game but also her teammates' games. She guided the Warriors (31-2) to a Class 4A supersectional for the second straight season as they set a program record for fewest losses.
Mporokoso, who has increased her scoring every season, averaged 22.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals. She ranks second on Waubonsie Valley's career scoring list with 1,972 points.
Even more impressive is Mporokoso's impact on her teammates. The Warriors' other four starters increased their scoring this season as well.
'She's amazing,' Waubonsie Valley junior guard Maya Cobb said. 'She just creates a lot for our team, defensively too.
'Just seeing her play and getting buckets, steals, all that, honestly feeds us all energy, and also her drive for the game literally motivates all of us to do better and be better.'
The greatest players make their teammates better. Mporokoso has done that despite being the top focus of every opposing defense's strategy.
'When she draws two or three defenders, I see her reads getting better,' Waubonsie Valley coach Brett Love said. 'I see her making those excellent passes, those extra passes when she brings more defenders.
'She's amazing at being able to create space and get her shot, no matter if it's on the 3-point line or getting to the basket. But she's getting everyone involved.'
That has increased the confidence of Mporokoso's teammates while decreasing other teams' abilities to defend the Warriors. The extra pressure doesn't bother her.
'She's used to being pressured,' Love said. 'We work on that a lot. We deny her in practice a lot so she can get used to that because other teams will do it.
'She usually puts the weight on her shoulders and will try to go out there and get it done. She plays at a high level year-round.'
That has rubbed off on the Warriors.
'She makes everyone around her better,' Waubonsie Valley senior forward Lily Newton said. 'Her work ethic is contagious. We have a shootaround an hour before practice, and she's there two hours before, getting her own training.
'She makes everyone around her want to be better, not for her but for themselves. It's players like her that push teams to get to state.'
The Warriors got there last year, finishing fourth and earning their first state trophy. Their bid for a repeat trip fell just short as they lost to Alton 67-62 in the supersectional on March 3 despite 32 points from Mporokoso, who has 16 Division I offers but intends to wait to make a commitment until the fall.
Mporokoso has a shot at breaking Ashley Luke's program and DuPage County scoring record of 2,885 points, although she will probably have to average at least 28 points to do so.
But such honors are not what drive Mporokoso.
'Statistically, I don't really know if I have specific goals, maybe more assists and rebounds, just to round out my game,' she said. 'I want to be successful as a team. It would be so nice to get back down to state. That's really my goal — go to state.'
Love has watched Mporokoso set and achieve goals throughout her career and expects that to continue.
'We lose Lily, which is a big piece, so she (Mporokoso) may have to step up her scoring, or she may have to step up as more of a leader next year,' Love said. 'But whatever she needs to do, she'll do it.'

Report: Warriors linked to multiple veteran free agents during offseason stalemate
The headliner throughout the Golden State Warriors' offseason has been Jonathan Kuminga. All eyes are on the 22-year-old forward as his extended restricted free agency saga rolls on deep into the summer. Kuminga has yet to sign a deal this offseason as he works through different options for his future with Golden State, including a potential sign-and-trade, a new extension with the Warriors, or accepting a $7.9 million qualifying offer. The standoff between the Warriors and Kuminga has slowed down Golden State's activity with other free agents during the offseason. Despite not signing a player this summer, the Warriors continue to be linked to multiple veteran free agents. In a recent appearance on NBA Today, ESPN's Anthony Slater mentioned a few names connected to the Warriors in free agency, including veteran center Al Horford. According to Slater, Horford is "ticketed" to be the Warriors' starting center next season if they can work out a deal. Slater also mentioned De'Anthony Melton, Seth Curry and Gary Payton II as potential options in free agency, along with second-round pick out of Florida Will Richard as potential roster pieces. Via @anythonyVslater on X: With no moves in the offseason and Kuminga's future with the team still in question, the Warriors' roster is currently thin. When Kuminga's situation is resolved, Mike Dunleavy Jr. and Steve Kerr will need fill out the remainder of the depth chart with veteran free agents. However, until then, all eyes will continue to stay on Golden State's saga with Kuminga. This post originally appeared on Warriors Wire! Follow us on Facebook and Twitter!

Thunder, Knicks, Warriors, Lakers lead 2025-26 NBA national TV schedule
The post Thunder, Knicks, Warriors, Lakers lead 2025-26 NBA national TV schedule appeared first on ClutchPoints. The NBA has officially revealed the full schedule for the 2025-26 season, which highlights every team's games that will be on national TV. To nobody's surprise, LeBron James and Stephen Curry are still the marquee names in the league, as the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors lead the pack, along with the Oklahoma City Thunder and New York Knicks. This year, the Lakers, Warriors, Thunder, and Knicks will each play a total of 34 games on national TV. As a result of the league's new media rights deal taking effect this season, national TV games include ESPN, ABC, NBC, Peacock, and Amazon Prime. Last season, the Lakers and Warriors led the way with 39 and 36 nationally televised games, respectively. The Knicks were right behind them with 34 games, while the Thunder only played 25 games on the main broadcasted channels. As a result of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leading Oklahoma City to their first championship in franchise history, the Thunder are now a part of the NBA's hierarchy when it comes to national TV games. Even near the end of their respective careers, James and Curry are still the two players everyone wants to see. Although his future in the league and with the Lakers is uncertain, LeBron will begin his 23rd NBA season in Los Angeles next to Luka Doncic. The 40-year-old averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game last season while leading the Lakers to the 3-seed in the Western Conference. In San Francisco, Curry is embarking on his 17th NBA season in search of his fifth championship with the Warriors. Next to Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green, the 37-year-old point guard averaged 24.5 points, 6.0 assists, and 4.4 rebounds per game last season while leading the league in free-throw percentage (93.3%) for the fifth time in his career. It shouldn't be all that surprising to see the Knicks at the top of this list as well. New York is coming off their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance since 2000, with Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns leading the way. The Knicks are undoubtedly the favorites to represent the East in the 2026 NBA Finals entering the 2025-26 season. The Washington Wizards, Toronto Raptors, Utah Jazz, and Brooklyn Nets are all tied for the fewest national TV games this upcoming NBA season — just two games each. Toronto and Washington's games will be on streaming services, meaning they will have zero games broadcasted on ESPN, ABC, or NBC. NBA Rivals Week schedule Those headlining the list of nationally televised games will be featured in some of the prominent matchups during NBA Rivals Week, which will take place from January 20 to 24. There will be a total of 11 national TV games on the networks of ESPN, ABC, NBC, Peacock, and Amazon Prime during these five days. The Lakers will play three games on the road against the Denver Nuggets, the LA Clippers, and the Dallas Mavericks during Rivals Week. This will mark one of two returns to Dallas this season for Los Angeles and Doncic. Golden State will play two games during Rivals Week. Their first game will be on the road against the Mavs on Jan. 22, followed by another road game on Jan. 24 against the Minnesota Timberwolves, who eliminated the Warriors from the playoffs last year. The Thunder will be on the road against the Milwaukee Bucks and at home against the Indiana Pacers in one of two 2025 NBA Finals rematches during the regular season. New York will get one national TV game during Rivals Week against the Philadelphia 76ers. The Lakers visiting the Mavericks on Saturday, Jan. 24, will be the final televised game during NBA Rivals Week.
