Brits enjoy midweek BBQs thanks to sizzling weather with healthier food on menu
More than three quarters of people believe that BBQs are no longer just a weekend pursuit - and many say they are eating less animal meat during the week more than they did in 2023
Barbecues were once reserved for the weekend but 2025's brilliant weather has led to more Brits than ever firing up the barbie midweek.
More than three quarters of us (78%) believe that BBQs are no longer just a weekend pursuit, according to research by plant-based food firm Beyond Meat to mark National Barbecue Week (May 26 to June 1). This is a recent trend, coinciding with our recent warmer summers, with more than half (53%) admitting they enjoy a BBQ Tuesday to Thursday more often than they did two years ago.
Lighting up the BBQ midweek isn't the only way our summer dining habits are changing as 42% of those surveyed saying they are eating less animal meat during the week more than they did in 2023. Meanwhile more than half (58%) said they now cook healthier dishes, with 47% reporting that having plant-based options on the menu is important to them, and a similar number agreeing cooking plant-based meat on a barbecue supports a balanced lifestyle.
Ellie Stevens, Senior Brand Manager GB at Beyond Meat said: 'Midweek BBQing gives a great excuse to get outside and create delicious plant-based meals.' As for our favourite plant-based meal to cook on the barbie? It's corn on the cob that is our choice by a mile, with 51% saying they love cooking it. Vegetarian kebabs (32%) are second, with a plant-based burger third (31%).
Ellie adds: 'Whether you're entertaining friends or looking for a quick al fresco dinner, our products are easy to cook on the barbecue, helping you cater for carnivores, vegans and flexitarians alike to deliver all the taste, with none of the worries.' To coincide with National BBQ Week, GP and influencer Dr Divya Sharma, aka 'Doctor Bowl' has shared her favourite recipe.
'Al fresco cooking is a brilliant way to get out in the fresh air, connect and experiment with plant-based foods in a new and exciting way,' she explains. 'Plant-based meat, such as the Beyond Burger. are high in protein and lend themselves to a whole host of mid-week dishes beyond the traditional bun.'
Her 'Beyond Burger Bowl' is made with Beyond Meat patties, roasted potatoes, and a vibrant salad - perfect for healthy midweek eating. The recipe is below:
Ingredients (Serves 2)
· 2 Beyond Burger patties

But some popular seasonal appliances can be pricey to run if you're not careful. Advertisement Here's how to make sure costs stay in check at this time of year . . . HOT TUB: More people are buying inflatable hot tubs to enjoy in their back garden. But these luxury items can have a big cost, burning up to £700 in energy a year. If you have one, it's important to invest in good insulation. Advertisement Bringing down the water temperature slightly can also help keep a lid on your outlay. AIR CON: Soaring temperatures can make your home sticky and uncomfortable. Portable air-conditioning units offer relief but are expensive to run. Advertisement Evaporative air coolers use far less energy than air-con units if you want to invest in a gadget. Or try closing your curtains on hot sunny days to stop the sun creating a greenhouse effect. Expert's warning over common barbecue myths that pose 'dangerous health risk' as Brits' grilling blunders revealed You could also place a bowl of ice in front of a fan to help cool down a room. And open windows a crack at night to let in a cooling breeze. Advertisement BBQ: If you're a grilling enthusiast, and frequently firing up the barbecue you might want to invest in a gas or electric model. It's generally cheaper to run an electric barbecue than a gas model, says Currys, because the electric version uses less energy to warm up the grill and at full heat. PATIO HEATER: Summer evenings can get cool and you might think a patio heater is the solution. But these appliances are energy-hungry, adding extra pounds to your power bills. Gardeners amazed by before-and-after results of patio cleaner with £100 off
The Ryobi 18V ONE+ Cordless Patio Cleaner is already more than £90 off, but shoppers can save an extra £15 with the discount code PC15. The arrival of lovely weather means many Brits are spending additional time in their gardens, with some noticing that their cherished green spaces could use a little rejuvenation. For garden enthusiasts facing the challenge of overgrown weeds and moss, Ryobi is offering significant savings on its cordless patio cleaner, slashing over £100 off the price. Ryobi's 18V ONE+ Cordless Patio Cleaner has already been reduced by more than £90, but with the promo code PC15, customers can enjoy an extra £15 off. This offer lowers the cost to £114.99, although the discount is set to end on June 13. According to Ryobi, the device presents a convenient solution for pristine patios free from the hassle of tangled wires, with customers commending it for "saving time". The wire brush operates at 1,350 rpm, and is adept at quickly clearing away unwanted weeds, moss, and grass from patios, pathways, and drives 'in seconds'. This tool eliminates bending or scraping, enabling users to pull the trigger and let the wire brush do the work, targeting areas between bricks and slabs. The battery-powered cleaner boasts an operation time of 32 minutes per charge and recharges fully in just 60 minutes. At a mere 3.3kg, the patio cleaner should be easy to manoeuvre and features an extendable pole, making height adjustment simple to accommodate all users, promising ergonomic ease. Moreover, the overmould grip provides additional comfort during extended use, reports the Mirror. Ryobi has innovated a gadget with a user-friendly handle, ensuring straightforward and compact storage to maximise space in your shed or garage, alongside a gentler nylon brush for scrubbing surfaces like sandstone or tile. The Ryobi 18V ONE+ Cordless Patio Cleaner has garnered an outstanding 4.6-star rating based on over 4,900 reviews, with 90 per cent being four or five stars. This triumphs over the 3.8-star rated Flymo 18V EasiWeeder KIT, which though it has a longer runtime by an additional 15 minutes, comes with a heftier price tag of £133.99. For those not shy about spending a little more, the Kärcher WRE 18-55 cordless weed remover is also an option, priced at £204.98 when purchased alongside a Kärcher 18V battery. Praising the Ryobi cordless patio cleaner, customers have labelled it an 'excellent tool', noting its effectiveness in saving time and alleviating back pain. One highly satisfied customer shared in their five-star review: "A great tool that takes a lot of the pain out of removing weeds in the joints of patios and driveways." Another appreciative buyer commented: "Excellent tool that saves time and your back. Wish I bought one years ago." However, while giving it a four-star rating, they pointed out a minor snag, remarking: "It works very well, apart from the difficulty in removing the battery to charge it." Yet another pleased customer reported it "makes light, quick work of clearing the weeds from block paving and stone paving". Another agreed: "Very good, saves a lot of time and having to bend down to get weeds up." Available at a reduced price of £114.99 with the promo code PC15, the Ryobi 18V ONE+ Cordless Patio Cleaner is a much-talked-about solution.

Cruise passengers can get free drink packages on over 40 sailings in 2025
Fred Olsen cruise line has launched a huge summer sale and Brits can currently get free drinks packages on a host of sailings in 2025 including Northern Lights cruises Brits planning cruise holidays this year may want to check out Fred. Olsen's latest summer sale, as the cruise line is currently offering a tempting deal with drinks. Cruises already include plenty such as your food, accommodation and travel, but if you want drinks, these usually come at an extra cost on the majority of cruise lines. A drinks package can be a great way of being able to indulge in a tipple or two without having to worry about the size of your bill at the end of the holiday, but these also come at an extra cost. However, Fred. Olsen is currently offering free drinks packages on over 40 sailings in 2025. That will include a range of house beers, spirits, wines and soft drinks too. Holidaymakers who book by June 25, 2025, will be able to enjoy the free drinks, worth £24.99 per person per night (or if you're booking five-night cruises, worth £35.99 per person, per night). You can already book on the Fred Olsen website, and there's an impressive array of itineraries included whether you're hoping to make the most of the summer sun on a sailing to Spain, or have a bucket-list-worthy winter and go in search of the Northern Lights. There's more good news as the sailings are across all three of its ships - Bolette, Borealis and Balmoral - with a range of UK departure ports including Southampton, Dover, Portsmouth, Liverpool, Newcastle and Rosyth (Edinburgh). Whatever cruise itinerary you're eyeing up, according to one cruise insider there are six items you should always pack before heading to the ship. One top tip? Packing both a backpack for your onshore excursions, but also a smaller evening bag for around the ship so you can carry a few essentials whether heading to dinner, a show or even just enjoying a trip to the bar. A card holder is also another essential item, although if you book a package that includes your drinks, gratuities and service charges, then you may not need to think too much about additional costs throughout the holiday! Meanwhile, sun-seeking Brits may want to keep an eye out for itineraries featuring Cartagena in Spain, after the beautiful city was named the sunniest in Europe. The historic port city, which is a popular stop for cruise ships, boasts a plethora of gorgeous architecture, as well as impressive museums and an eye-catching Roman amphitheatre. Unsurprisingly, it's a firm favourite with history and culture fans as well the foodies who flock to the city to indulge in some of that mouthwatering Spanish food. (Tapas and wine, anyone?). The cruise hotspot is underrated, with most tourists opting for the likes of Alicante or Murcia instead, so one of the benefits of visiting is that it doesn't always have the huge crowds found in other spots in peak months (although on a shore day, you might find it a little busier because of the cruise crowds).
