BOJ decides to slow bond taper, keeps rates steady
TOKYO :The Bank of Japan kept interest rates steady on Tuesday and decided to slow the pace of reduction in its bond purchases from next fiscal year, signalling its preference to move cautiously in normalising still-easy monetary policy.
As widely expected, the central bank maintained short-term interest rates at 0.5 per cent by a unanimous vote at the two-day policy meeting that ended on Tuesday.
It also decided to make no changes to an existing bond taper plan that runs through March 2026 and laid out a new plan beyond April next year.
Under the plan for fiscal 2026, the BOJ will reduce monthly bond buying by 200 billion yen each quarter so that the size of purchases will fall to around 2 trillion yen by March 2027.

Thai cabinet approves US$1.2 billion bid to host Formula 1 race in 2028
BANGKOK: Thailand's cabinet has approved a US$1.2 billion bid to host a Formula One street race in its capital Bangkok in 2028, government officials said on Tuesday (Jun 17). If successful, the Thai capital would win a contract to host a race each year from 2028 to 2032, government spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub told a news conference. "In the next 2-3 years, Thailand will have world-class competition, which we never thought would actually happen in Thailand," Jirayu said. Tourism Minister Sorawong Thienthong told reporters the bid is worth about 40 billion baht (US$1.23 billion). In March, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra met with Formula One chief Stefano Domenicali and said Thailand would commission a feasibility study into hosting a Grand Prix on a Bangkok street circuit from 2028. Hosting the race will help promote tourism, a key driver of Thailand's economy, the government has said. Formula One already has a crowded schedule of 24 races around the world, with four in the Asia-Pacific region, including the Singapore Grand Prix in Southeast Asia. Thailand has an FIA-accredited track in Buriram in the northeast of the country, which currently hosts a round of the MotoGP motorcycling world championships, but the proposal is for a street race in the kingdom's capital.

Japan's Nikkei hits 4-month high on Wall Street's lead
[TOKYO] Japan's Nikkei share average advanced to a four-month high on Tuesday (Jun 17), tracking overnight Wall Street gains following signs of a potential de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East. Bank shares rose after the Bank of Japan signalled it is still on track to raise interest rates in the longer term. The broader equity market, however, largely shrugged off widely expected decisions to keep borrowing costs steady and slow the pace of government bond purchase reductions from next April. The Nikkei closed 0.6 per cent higher at 38,536.74. Earlier in the day, it reached 38,581.25 for the first time since February 21. The broader Topix added 0.4 per cent. The Topix banking index ended the day up 0.3 per cent, reversing morning session losses. Japanese growth shares still outperformed, though, with a Topix index of the securities up 0.5 per cent, compared with a 0.2 per cent rise for value shares. Chip-related stocks were among the Nikkei's top performers. Disco was the biggest percentage gainer with a 6.3 per cent surge. Advantest climbed 2.4 per cent and Tokyo Electron advanced 2.9 per cent. Out of the Nikkei's 225 components, 136 rose, 83 fell, and six ended flat. REUTERS
