Over 14,000 men among 26 lakh ineligible beneficiaries barred from Maharashtra's Ladki Bahin scheme for women

Indian Express5 days ago
The Maharashtra Government has suspended 26.34 lakh beneficiaries from its flagship Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana after a verification exercise revealed large-scale irregularities, including the presence of over 14,000 male claimants of the dole meant for women.
While some were availing of the benefits of multiple government schemes, some families had more than two members receiving benefits, and some men were also found to be availing of the scheme's benefits.
In a statement issued by Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare on Sunday, the department confirmed that it had sought data from all state departments to verify the eligibility of applicants under the scheme.
The verification, conducted by the Department of Information and Technology, flagged lakhs of entries where beneficiaries were found ineligible but continued to receive financial support under the scheme.
'Some beneficiaries were found to be availing of multiple government schemes. In other cases, families had more than two members receiving benefits. Shockingly, there were also instances where male applicants had been granted funds under the scheme,' Tatkare said.
Based on these findings, disbursement of funds to 26.34 lakh such accounts has been temporarily stopped starting June 2025.
The minister clarified that this was a precautionary suspension and that district collectors had been tasked with conducting a detailed review to determine eligibility. 'Those found to be genuinely eligible will have their benefits restored,' Tatkare said.
Despite the suspension, around 2.25 crore eligible women received the monthly Rs 1,500 dole for June 2025.
The discovery that 14,298 men had availed of benefits under the scheme for women has drawn sharp criticism from the Opposition. The Government has since removed all such ineligible male beneficiaries from the list.
Responding to the criticism, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said the state would recover the amounts disbursed to these individuals and would take legal action if they fail to cooperate.
'This scheme was launched with a sincere intention to support poor women. It was never meant for men. Misuse will not be tolerated,' Pawar said, when asked about the matter.
The Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, launched in August 2024 by the Eknath Shinde-led Maha Yuti Government ahead of the Assembly polls, with the monthly dole credited directly into the bank accounts of women whose annual income is less than Rs 2.5 lakh.
The scheme gained widespread traction across the state, especially in the run-up to the Assembly elections, and credit was given to the scheme for the victory of the Mahayuti.
During the Assembly elections, Mahayuti leaders had promised to raise this amount to Rs 2,100, which was considered instrumental in helping the alliance return to power.
In March, during the first budget presented by the Government under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, no announcement was made regarding the anticipated increase in the Ladki Bahin dole.
The Opposition has been targeting the government over increasing the dole and accusing the government of hurriedly starting the scheme with an eye on the Assembly polls and overburdening the exchequer.
Meanwhile, Tatkare added that the Government would soon decide — in consultation with Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Shinde and Pawar — on the course of action to be taken against fraudulent or fake claimants who had deliberately misled authorities to claim benefits.

AKG Centre built on revenue land, guv seeks VC's report

1 2 3 4 5 T'puram: AKG Centre, where the CPM state committee office functioned until recently, was built on revenue land in Vanchiyoor village in the state capital, the revenue department said in reply to an RTI application. Since it is revenue (puramboke) land, the department did not receive land tax, the RTI reply stated. Meanwhile, governor Rajendra Arlekar is understood to have sought a report from Kerala University vice-chancellor Mohanan Kunnummal on the alleged encroachment of university land by CPM. The Save University Campaign Committee submitted a memorandum to the governor, seeking urgent steps to reclaim the land, which the CPM allegedly encroached upon for setting up AKG Centre. According to land revenue records, AKG Centre is functioning in 55 cents of revenue land, adjacent to the Kerala University Senate House campus. The Kerala University vice-chancellor is expected to present the land encroachment matter at the next syndicate meeting and submit a report to the governor. It was former chief minister A K Antony who sanctioned 15 cents of land to the CPM for setting up a research centre. Later, the Kerala University syndicate decided to give 15 cents more to CPM. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Potrobangsan: Unsold Sofas Prices May Surprise You (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo However, there are no records available in the district collectorate, taluk office or village office regarding the land allotment. Due to the non-availability of land allotment documents, revenue officials refused to collect land tax from AKG Centre. However, AKG Centre could obtain a Thiruvananthapuram corporation number and it pays Rs 10.5 lakh as property tax. SUCC, in its memorandum to the governor, claimed that AKG Centre was able to obtain a corporation permit using political influence. SUCC alleged that the entire 55 cents of land under the custody of AKG Centre belonged to Kerala University. Although Antony and the university syndicate decided to grant 15 cents each to AKG Centre, the CPM failed to claim the ownership of the land legally. Further, it encroached on more university land. "If the governor fails to take steps to reclaim the land from AKG Centre, SUCC will initiate legal proceedings," said the committee chairman R S Sasikumar. Meanwhile, the vice-chancellor met governor on Thursday and appraised him of the developments in the university.

Telangana Dy CM dedicates 1st unit of Yadadri Thermal Power Plant

Nalgonda, Aug 1 (UNI) Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu said the 4,000 MW Yadadri Thermal Power Plant will be fully dedicated to the nation by January next year. Speaking after dedicating the first 800 MW unit to the nation on Friday and laying the foundation stone for an integrated township at the project site, to be developed at a cost of Rs 970 crore, Bhatti Vikramarka termed the event 'historic' for meeting the state's power needs. He said the project was delayed for nearly two years due to the previous government's failure to secure environmental clearances, which increased costs significantly. 'After the present Congress government came to power, clearances were obtained in just two months, and two units totaling 1,600 MW were completed by setting weekly and monthly targets,' he explained. The Deputy CM announced that employees working at the remote site would be provided with world-class educational institutions, corporate-level medical facilities, and local welfare measures. Free education and healthcare will also be extended to local residents who cooperated in the project's construction, along with ambulance services and road development. He assured that those who gave up land for the project would receive jobs by August 15 and full rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) benefits. Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy praised Bhatti Vikramarka for his dynamic supervision, stating that the Yadadri project, once stalled, is now progressing rapidly and will benefit the state's power supply within two years. Building Opened As Orphanage In 2021, Never Used, Inaugurated Again As Hotel In Assam

Guwahati/New Delhi: A government building that was inaugurated as a home for orphans and destitute children four years ago in Assam's Dima Hasao district was again inaugurated this month as a hotel. The baffling matter was reported from Boro Haflong village in the hill district Dima Hasao. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the government building on July 26, 2021. His cabinet colleagues were also present at the event then. The government facility was built under the non-lapsable central pool of resources (NLCPR) project at an estimated cost of Rs 2.98 crore. It was meant to be used as a home for orphans and vulnerable children in the hill district in Assam. The building remained unused and its purpose as an orphanage never materialised, government sources said. In February 2022, the structure was partially demolished and renovated, but the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council never explained why, sources said. On July 26, locals said they were surprised when the same government building that was meant to house orphans was inaugurated as a private hotel. Debolal Gorlosa, the chief executive member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, inaugurated the private hotel and even shared visuals of the event on his social media handles.
