Cardinals' Willson Contreras out of lineup with foot injury after being hit by pitch

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras was not in the lineup Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies a day after he was hit in the foot by a pitch and broke his bat in frustration.
Contreras, listed as day-to-day with a right foot contusion, was hit by Rockies starter Kyle Freeland's 0-2 sweeper in the fourth inning. He then slammed his bat into the dirt and snapped it over his knee.
As he walked toward first base, the 33-year-old threw the two pieces of the broken bat toward the Cardinals' dugout.
The Cardinals said X-rays did not reveal any structural damage in Contreras' foot.
Contreras has been hit by a National League-leading 18 pitches this season, trailing only Randy Arozarena and Ty France.

The home of the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning renamed Benchmark International Arena

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The home of the Tampa Bay Lightning has a new name, Benchmark International Arena, after the NHL team unveiled a multiyear agreement Wednesday with the mergers and acquisitions company. The change takes effect immediately. The building that opened in 1996 had been known as Amalie Arena since 2014, and it was the site of the Lightning hoisting the Stanley Cup in 2021 for their second of back-to-back championships. Financial terms were not disclosed. Benchmark International and Vinik Sports Group, which owns the Lightning, said their partnership includes more than $3 million in nonprofit contributions to benefit the area. Vinik Sports Group CEO Steve Griggs called Benchmark 'a well-respected brand with global reach and strong ties to the Tampa Bay community' and said Amalie Motor Oil will continue to be a corporate partner of the organization. ___

Bournemouth signs Diakite to bolster defense after $200M of sales

BOURNEMOUTH, England (AP) — Bournemouth bolstered its creaking defense by signing center back Bafodé Diakité from Lille on Wednesday in a deal worth up to a reported 40 million euros ($47 million). Bournemouth has sold almost its entire first-choice backline over the offseason — center backs Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi and left back Milos Kerkez, as well as goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga — to generate around $200 million. He could make his debut for Bournemouth at Liverpool on Friday in the opening game of the Premier League season. ___

Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong Offers Blunt Explanation for Untimely Slump

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. What looked to be a dream season for Chicago Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong has started going sideways. Crow-Armstrong not only made his first All-Star team this season, but he was a top contender for Most Valuable Player honors in the National League. But since the start of August, he's been mired in an inexplicable, horrific slump. Granted, it's only been 10 games. But Crow-Armstrong is 3-for-37 with two walks and a double, striking out 14 times. That's an OPS of .213, bringing his season mark down to .815 and putting him at long odds to get back in the MVP race. (Photo by)Crow-Armstrong's slump has also coincided with the evaporation of the Cubs' division title hopes, as the Milwaukee Brewers, riding an 11-game winning streak entering Wednesday, have taken a 7 1/2-game lead in the National League Central. On Tuesday, Crow-Armstrong talked about his slump with The Athletic's Sadahev Sharma, and he couldn't pin down much in the way of a concrete cause for his lack of production. "Nothing is really wrong," Crow-Armstrong told Sharma. "I just suck at hitting baseballs sometimes right now. That's OK. It doesn't feel OK when I'm on the field and want to help my team win. You'd like to be the kick-starter or game-changer." Sharma also presented data that suggested that rather than chasing outside the strike zone too much, which is a staple of his game anyway, Crow-Armstrong is actually missing good pitches to hit when they come. "That's kind of what he's going through right now," hitting coach Dustin Kelly said, per Sharma. "There's not a ton of stuff with the swing that's different; the tempo looks really good. Sometimes you go through spells where you just don't get it on the barrel like you want to and it ends up on the ground." So perhaps this is just baseball, and it's still a short enough slump that Crow-Armstrong can turn things around with a good week or two. But he could have hardly picked a worse time to stop producing, because no one seems to be able to pick up the slack.
