The Athletic has posted a profit for the past three quarters, proving its parent, the New York Times, is good for its word when it comes to Wall Street projections.
Why it matters: The sports media startup was losing millions when the Times acquired it in 2022. Times executives assured investors that the site would eventually be accretive to its revenue growth rate after three years.
Reality check: If The Athletic didn't become reliably profitable within the time frame the Times projected, it would've made it harder for the Gray Lady to convince investors of its strategy for future acquisitions.
Zoom in: A big part of The Athletic's path to profitability has been integrating it further into the New York Times subscription bundle and growing its paid advertising.
The New York Times no longer breaks out how many subscribers The Athletic has individually, but it does disclose subscriber numbers for its newsletters.
The Pulse had 2.4 million newsletter subscribers a year ago, per Digiday, and is now up to more than 3.5 million, a spokesperson said. The Athletic — which just debuted its 10th newsletter, hockey-focused Red Light — will surpass 6 million subscribers this week, the spokesperson added.
Zoom out: The Athletic has started to explore bigger advertising partnerships. Deals with BetMGM, eBay and StubHub have helped it explore sports lifestyle topics such as betting, collectibles and ticketing, respectively.
Those types of opportunities are expected to be a big part of The Athletic's commercial expansion, executives previously told Axios.
The Athletic has expanded in audio. This week, it said " The Tennis Podcast" was joining The Athletic Podcast Network. And last month, it signed an ad sales deal with Swedish podcast company Acast for audio ads, podcast sponsorships, podcast video and branded content.
What to watch: While The Athletic has mostly focused on text and audio to date, the company has invested more in video. That could drive more commercial opportunities.
At a NewFronts presentation earlier this month, The Athletic announced "No Free Lunch," a digital series hosted by former NFL player Ndamukong Suh.
The Athletic is partnering with the NBA and WNBA to provide highlights embedded in its articles and its app. It said it will use footage in video journalism, including game breakdowns called "The Athletic Spotlight," Zach Harper's commentary "The Bounce Weekly-ish" and video essays.

Everyone here, except the warrior-hearted Ewoks, would drive Luthen berserk. Around this time each year, every college football outlet begins some sort of season preview series, and Until Saturday is no exception. There will be no consistent outline to these, and if I were to start handing out superlative categories, I'd forget to do them at some point. I do not have any Phil Steele-style acronyms yet, but maybe I'll invent some. We're just gonna wing it. Let's start it off by going a little broader than just FBS, even though there isn't exactly space to dig into each Division III conference's 2025 schedule. (Then again, this parenthetical is now the newsletter's third mention this year of Middlebury College.) Just to have it all in one place, here are the defending champs in these NCAA levels — and as you can see, repeats would not be shocking: Beyond the who's-gonna-win basics, though: Considering the amount of national attention usually paid to college sports outside of Division I's upper levels, it feels urgent to check in on the big-picture status of small schools in The NIL And Portal Era. So I asked a couple-ish questions to Matt Brown (no relation to The Athletic's Matt Brown, though they have hung out at Big Ten media days, per sources), the proprietor of Extra Points, an excellent newsletter digging into loads of off-field stories about college sports from the NAIA on up. (This includes Matt's extensive coverage of the video game.) Over the past five years or so, how has life generally changed for athletic directors in levels outside of FBS? Matt: 'Being a small-school AD has always been a tough gig, because smaller staff sizes require you to be more involved in everything from fundraising to hiring and coach development. In the NIL era, the job had become even harder — because now you have to pretend you have the donor support to justify a meaningful collective, and your players can leave faster. That isn't to say it's all bad, but a lot of folks aren't sleeping as well as they used to.' What about when it comes to football in particular? 'The thing that's tougher about football is that the roster is so much larger. If a third of your basketball roster transfers, that really sucks, but that's four people. In football, that's like 28 dudes, people who then have to be replaced during a very truncated recruiting cycle. That puts even more pressure on your coaches and donors, and makes sustaining success much harder. Winning the league is awesome, but if it means seven of your starters bounce for the ACC, it takes a toll on everybody.' If you had to take either The Dakotas or Everybody Else to win the FCS title this year: Who ya got? 'Few people have ever gone broke betting on the Dakotas to win a national title.' Read the full story on Modern Car Collector A £2.2 million Koenigsegg Jesko hypercar, owned by private jet mogul Ameerh Naran, was slapped with a parking ticket this week after being left on a Kensington street while its owner dined nearby. Naran, the CEO of luxury aviation brokerage Vimana Private Jets, parked the ultra-rare Swedish hypercar on Derry Street, just outside the trendy Dishoom restaurant in West London. Moments later, a Kensington and Chelsea traffic warden issued a bright yellow parking charge notice (PCN), placing it squarely on the carbon-fiber bonnet of the car—an image quickly shared online. With a fine of up to £160 (reduced to £80 if paid within two weeks), the penalty is a small price to pay compared to the Jesko's jaw-dropping $3 million valuation. Powered by a 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8, the Jesko produces 1,280 horsepower on standard fuel—or up to 1,600 hp on E85—and is capable of reaching 62 mph in under three seconds. According to his Instagram posts, Naran, 39, was enjoying lunch at the nearby Rooftop Gardens while the parking incident unfolded. Originally from Zimbabwe, the entrepreneur built his jet charter empire after studying automotive design, and later launched his own hypercar company, Naran Automotive. Despite his aviation focus, cars have remained central to Naran's identity. A former aspiring racing driver, he once told Forbes that he dreamed of building supercars since childhood. His clients—ranging from royals to ultra-high-net-worth individuals—spend up to $1 million a month on private travel, and often shop at elite brands like Harrods, Ferrara Diamonds, and Asprey London. This isn't the first luxury car to run afoul of Derry Street's strict parking rules. Comedian Michael McIntyre had his £195,000 Mercedes-AMG GT R towed from the same location in May after parking in a police-only zone.
