An unhealthy trend in Kelantan
KOTA BARU: Cases of diabetes and high cholesterol levels among the people in Kelantan saw an increase and exceeded the national average indicator, says Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.
The Health Minister said that based on the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2023, 16.3% of the people in Kelantan suffered from diabetes, an increase of 0.7% compared to the national average indicator of 15.6%.
'High cholesterol levels also showed an increase among the people in Kelantan, recording 34.9%.
'The national average indicator is 33.3%,' he said when opening the Kelantan Wellness Hub open day in Pengkalan Chepa, Bernama reported.
Dzulkefly said 51.6% of the people in Kelantan are categorised as overweight or obese while for high blood pressure, it was 27.9%.
The national average for both are 54.4% and 9.2%, respectively.
He described the findings on Kelantan as 'worrying' although the state recorded better performance in several indicators compared to the national level.
'To address this, the ministry has introduced and implemented the 'Agenda Nasional Malaysia Sihat' as a platform to mobilise the culture of a healthy lifestyle,' he said.

Ministry issues anti-bullying guidelines
Your browser does not support the audio element. PUTRAJAYA: The Health Ministry has launched workplace bullying management guidelines as part of its zero-tolerance policy against bullying. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the guidelines outlined clear procedures for reporting, investigating and addressing bullying cases fairly and transparently. He said bullying was not just an individual issue, but a systemic problem that could undermine organisational integrity, demoralise teams and compromise patient care. "The guidelines, developed by the National Centre of Excellence for Mental Health, are more than an administrative framework. They represent a cultural shift within the ministry towards empathy, professionalism and support," he said. "The guidelines provide department heads and staff with detailed procedures for identifying bullying behaviour, reporting and investigating complaints, as well as resolving cases with fairness, transparency and effectiveness. "One of the key initiatives supporting the guidelines is the Bullying Complaint Management System (MyHELP), established in 2022 following recommendations from the Healthcare Work Culture Improvement Task Force. "It allows complaints to be lodged directly with the ministry's Integrity Unit." Dzulkefly said the guidelines complemented several initiatives aimed at improving workplace culture and staff well-being, including flexible working hours to reduce fatigue and peer support teams under the Public Service Peer Guidance Associates programme. "It also complements the placement of counselling units at headquarters and state health departments, as well as the HEAL 15555 hotline, which operates daily, including public holidays, providing immediate emotional and psychosocial support." He said the ministry would distribute the guidelines to all its facilities nationwide and continuously monitor their implementation. Dzulkefly said the ministry recorded 430 complaints of workplace bullying between Oct 1, 2022, and July 31 this year, with four cases under investigation. He said the ministry took a firm stance against bullying, stressing that any form of misconduct within its institutions would not be tolerated. "Each complaint matters, and bullying should never be normalised. We will not tolerate complacency or negligence, especially among heads of department. "I do not want to hear of under-reporting." He added that every case received via the MyHELP platform was investigated thoroughly, based on principles of justice and transparency, while safeguarding the confidentiality of whistleblowers and victims. "Those reporting must feel safe, and I am very conscious of this. I am fully aware of the concerns they may have regarding whether their privacy will truly be protected. "I want to ensure that under our practices and within these guidelines, there are clear responsibilities to safeguard the privacy of those who lodge complaints," he added.

MOH finalising report on proposed vape ban
KUALA LUMPUR: A detailed report on the proposed ban of e-cigarettes and vapes is being finalised by a Health Ministry expert committee, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. He said the report, which also considers the use of prohibited substances in vape liquids, including drugs, will be presented to the cabinet once completed, though no timeline was disclosed. "It is no longer a question of if we ban, but when we ban. "This will be the essence of the report submitted to the prime minister and Cabinet," he told the Dewan Rakyat during the ministry's winding-up debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan yesterday. Dzulkefly reiterated that the government's direction is towards a ban, particularly after evidence of drug contamination in open-system vapes. He said a total ban cannot be enforced immediately as the government has already gazetted the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024, which regulates the industry. Responding to Bandar Kuching member of parliament Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen, who raised concerns over the rise of drug-laced vapes similar to cases in Singapore, Dzulkefly said the ministry is also studying the broader health risks, including e-cigarette or vaping-associated lung injury (EVALI). He cautioned that an abrupt ban could expose the government to legal challenges from industry players who have legitimate expectations under the Act. Gazetted on Feb 2, 2024, the Act came ino force on Oct 1, 2024, together with the Regulations and Orders made under it. Dzulkefly said the issue will also be brought to the regional level, with Malaysia proposing that vape control be included in the agenda of the Asean Health Ministers Meeting (AHMM) next year.

AI Helps Improve Accuracy Of Health Diagnosis
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- The Health Ministry (MOH) will continue expanding the use of AI in the national healthcare system to improve the accuracy of disease diagnosis, said Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. He said AI has already been applied in several field initiatives, including the Lung Health Initiatives, which utilises diagnostic data, particularly X-rays. '…it is difficult to make a diagnosis, especially for sinister nodules where we cannot tell if it is tuberculosis or not. But AI will help us achieve precision in such diagnoses,' he told Bernama after appearing as a guest on Bernama TV's Ruang Bicara programme titled 'Towards a Sustainable and Inclusive Healthcare System' tonight. He said AI is rapidly advancing in oncology as well as in cardiology, surgery, general medicine, specialised surgery, and dentistry, as well as various other fields, and is expected to continue growing. 'We will certainly embrace more AI applications and AI research related to health, in the form of research or services,' he said, adding that MOH is committed to implementing such initiatives. Meanwhile, Dr Dzulkefly said MOH practices zero-tolerance against all forms of workplace bullying among its staff as part of efforts to create a safe and harmonious working environment. According to him, from the start of his administration, he had conveyed a firm message that bullying is utterly intolerable, with more than 400 complaints received to date. 'I am confident of saying that the existence of these bullying management guidelines sends a clear warning and exerts pressure on potential workplace bullies within MOH,' he said. He said that creating a fair and safe work environment must start with human values and a character rooted in compassion.
