World Bank: 1.8 billion South Asians at risk to extreme heat by 2030
More than 1.8 billion people across South Asia could face life-threatening exposure to extreme heat by 2030, according to a new report from the World Bank. The region, which includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal, is rapidly becoming one of the world's most heat-exposed zones due to accelerating climate change.
Health and livelihood risks
The report warns that rising temperatures could trigger widespread heat-related illness, especially among vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children and outdoor workers. Extended exposure can lead to heatstroke, dehydration and worsened chronic health conditions.
More than 60% of households and businesses in South Asia have experienced extreme weather in the past five years. Over 75% expect conditions to worsen within the next decade.
Trending on NextShark:
Economic and infrastructure strain
Extreme heat is projected to reduce economic productivity in labor-intensive sectors such as agriculture and construction. Workers in these industries face increased physical stress, reduced capacity and higher rates of absenteeism, which may lead to measurable declines in output.
The report outlines significant infrastructure challenges linked to rising temperatures. Increased demand for cooling may overwhelm power grids, while prolonged heat can weaken roads and railways through material expansion. Higher evaporation rates are likely to reduce water availability, compounding stress on public utilities and agricultural irrigation systems.
Trending on NextShark:
Urgent need for action
The World Bank urges South Asian governments to implement immediate adaptation measures to reduce climate risks, including early warning systems for heatwaves, climate-resilient construction and expanded access to public cooling centers.
The report also emphasizes the need for regional coordination on data, infrastructure and resources to manage threats that cross national borders. It concludes that without large-scale adaptation, rising temperatures will continue to threaten public health, economic productivity and essential systems across South Asia.

BigBear.ai, Sea, Starbucks: Trending Tickers
(BBAI) stock plunges after the company's second quarter revenue disappointed Wall Street. Sea (SE) stock surges after the company reported record-high quarterly sales. Starbucks (SBUX) stock is in focus after Baird analysts upgraded the stock to Outperform from Neutral, citing optimism on the company's turnaround strategy. To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Market Catalysts. Now time for some of today's trending tickers. We are watching Big Bear AI, C, and Starbucks. First up, Big Bear AI shares sinking today. The AI software company reporting revenue for the second quarter that missed the average analyst estimate. The company also lowered its revenue guidance and withdrew its adjusted EBITDA outlook on government contract uncertainty. Still with us, our own Brook DiPalma and those shares down 26%. This sort of echoes the C3 AI uh drop that we saw yesterday. So it's kind of interesting here to see, you know, to see some of the smaller AI players face some uh some uncertainty. Yeah, what we're really seeing play out here is that there are key winners in this environment and key losers. So to say, especially as so many so many investors have really banked on all AI companies benefiting from this AI boom, this revolution, this environment that we're in, but we're seeing that not be the case, especially, we saw perhaps, you know, Google, that company jump on their uh raising their spending forecast. We also saw Microsoft also raise its look outlook around AI. And now hearing a company saying, actually, we're not going to raise our outlook. Actually, you know, we're we're we're taking a bit of a hit here because of those contracts that have not gone underway. That is certainly raising eyebrows for investors here. And that's why we're seeing a bit of a sell off. They are much lower than their 52 week high, which was above $10 in Cantor Fitzgerald saying in a report that secular tailwinds and improved financial flexibility is what the report largely reflects despite near-term execution issues. They And of course, just to reiterate that that uh revenue miss was largely driven by the federal program disruptions related to the US Army's efforts to consolidate its data architecture. And so winners and clear losers in this AI boom here. Yeah, definitely. And next up, let's talk about C, the South Asian e-commerce giant out with earnings as well. Second quarter sales beating analyst estimates, as more Southeast Asia's consumers turned to online shopping for everything from iPhones to daily groceries. And the results are easing some concerns about the prospects of um the e-commerce um uh phenomenon that we're seeing here. Those shares are up by 21%, Brook. Yeah, and and this company's had quite the run. Over the year, the company's stock is up more than 170%. And just year to date, as this has gone underway, the company stock is up more than 60%. It's worth noting too that if we take a look at the Yahoo Finance platform, and we go down to the statistics part of it, if you look at their 52 week high, they're currently trading around 176. So this would be a all all um a year high for the stock as well. And this actually reminded me of a conversation that I recently had with the Anheiser Busch CEO. We did see their Chinese um market under a bit of pressure. And what the CEO actually told me was super interesting and goes along with this trend, is that the consumer in China is staying more at home. That Anheiser Busch Bush actually caters to restaurants and bars there, and they now need to adopt and learn and lean in to this consumer that's more digitally native. And we also saw a company like Luckin Coffee do well there, as they're very digital focused. This customer also leans into heavily in food apps and delivery. And so certainly, we're seeing this company that plays into the e-commerce market with a very digital native consumer win big here and see key returns. Right. Um and finally, squarely in your wheelhouse, Starbucks is getting upgraded at Baird to outperform from neutral. The analyst there says that he has high conviction that turnaround strategies under new leadership will be effective in transforming Starbucks into a better company. You know a lot about this, uh Brook, having spoken to the company, having covered the company in detail because there has been sort of this, you know, uncertainty about how effective all of these efforts were going to be. Yeah, we're certainly continuing to see a sales lump when it comes to the US same-store sales growth for Starbucks. Once again, seeing a sales slump still happening here. But there's been some change in optimism about what exactly CEO Brian Nickel will bring to the table here as he really doubles down on something we just heard Dutch Bros weigh in on, and that's speed and efficiency and quality, and also that value perception. That's something that Brian Nickel believes that it needs to lean more into. And a fun fact here is that tomorrow actually marks one year since Brian Nickel was named the CEO of Starbucks. And so it's interesting timing that we're getting this upgrade um from an analyst here who really is betting on the fact that this will be a better company after it makes all these changes. But I think that the story is still yet to unfold. Of course, a new CFO just joined as well. And so we don't know exactly uh the guidance for the full year. They do expect the second half to be stronger. Um but ultimately, it remains to be seen. The optimism though, on the street, right now, there are 19 buys on the stock, 16 holds and one sell. And so there's a bit of bullishness around Starbucks heading into the second half of the year. Yes. Heritage Grocers Group Elevates Fresh Prepared Foods Strategy with Predictive Analytics to Serve Diverse Communities at Scale
ONTARIO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Heritage Grocers Group (HGG), a leading Hispanic and ethnic food retailer, today announced a strategic transformation in how it plans and produces fresh prepared foods. By shifting from experience-based methods to a cutting-edge, data-driven production planning system, HGG aims to enhance product availability, optimize labor, and better serve the rich diversity of the communities it calls home. "Leveraging predictive analytics, this system will enhance market demand fulfillment and boost sales through optimized product availability and superior customer experience," said Prabash Coswatte, Chief Operating Officer for Heritage Grocers Group. "Leveraging predictive analytics, this system will enhance market demand fulfillment and boost sales through optimized product availability and superior customer experience," said Prabash Coswatte, Chief Operating Officer for Heritage Grocers Group. Headquartered in Ontario, California, HGG operates across six states—California, Texas, Nevada, Arizona, Kansas, and Illinois—under four beloved banners: Cardenas Markets, El Rancho Supermercado, Tony's Fresh Market, and Los Altos Ranch Market. Across these regions, HGG is recognized not only for its extensive fresh offerings, but also for delivering authentic food experiences that resonate with multicultural shoppers. The decision to revamp its production strategy is backed by a compelling insight: multicultural families are driving America's fresh prepared food revolution. According to the International Dairy Deli Bakery Association (IDDBA), 76% of Hispanic, 70% of Asian American, and 69% of African American shoppers purchase prepared foods at grocery stores—compared to just 59% of white/Caucasian shoppers. This trend is fueled by a desire for quick, high-quality meals that reflect cultural traditions and suit the needs of larger family units. 'Fresh prepared isn't just about convenience anymore—it's about cultural connection,' said Coswatte. 'From carnitas and caldo to pan dulce and pozole, our customers are asking for ready-made meals that feel like home. This new system ensures we meet that demand, store by store, hour by hour.' Mike Sanders, CEO of Upshop, the technology partner behind this transformation, added, 'We believe the future of retail excellence lies in the power of AI and a single, unified operations platform. By streamlining forecasting, labor, and production into one intelligent system, we're helping retailers like Heritage Grocers Group move from good to great—maximizing efficiency, minimizing waste, and most importantly, delivering a better experience for every shopper, every day.' What the New System Delivers: Elevated Sales: By improving freshness and minimizing stockouts, HGG ensures customers can find what they need—when they need it. Smarter Demand & Team Planning: Forecasting tools align staffing with actual demand, particularly in service meat and deli departments. Efficiency Gains: Batch processing for cutting and wrapping reduces prep time and allows employees to focus on customer-facing roles. Better Service: Fewer wait times and more consistent product availability enhance the in-store experience. Workforce Optimization: Scheduling is tailored to each store's unique production rhythm, improving labor utilization and employee satisfaction. With multicultural consumers also driving mainstream adoption of global flavors, according to Nielsen, this initiative not only modernizes operations—it secures HGG's leadership position at the heart of America's evolving food landscape. This is more than a systems upgrade. It's a reaffirmation of HGG's belief that culture and technology can—and must—coexist in the aisles where families shop, celebrate, and connect. H Mart opens to long lines, hungry customers in Westminster
A few red pop-up tents outside the new H Mart supermarket in Westminster provided some shade to the many customers who braved the 90-degree heat for its grand opening on a recent Thursday. Under the tents, members of the Korean grocer's rewards program were offered free tote bags and other gifts, items such as chopsticks, floral bowls and vegetable strainers. Nearby, the line to get into the H Mart stretched well beyond the neighboring Daiso Japanese Household Goods store. Located at 16450 Beach Blvd., H Mart Westminster is the company's 19th store in California and the sixth in Orange County. At 72,916 square feet, it is also the chain's largest location. The opening on Aug. 7 featured a traditional lion dance for good luck and comments from local officials, including Assemblyman Tri Ta, Westminster Mayor Chi Charlie Nguyen and James Bong Cho, president of the Korean American Federation of Orange County. 'Westminster is a culturally diverse community, and we are excited to welcome H Mart into our city,' Nguyen said. 'As the largest Asian American supermarket chain in the United States, H Mart's products and offerings will resonate well with our residents and visitors alike.' H Mart opened its first store in Woodside, Queens, N.Y. in 1982 and has since grown into a national supermarket chain with more than 100 locations in 18 states. Its stores stock a wide assortment of Asian groceries, from fresh produce, meats, seafood and pantry staples to frozen foods, health and beauty products and appliances. The grocery store is a one-stop shop for many Korean American households looking for special treats or specific ingredients, like Napa cabbage to make kimchi. Customers swarmed to the new store for items like viral fruit-shaped ice cream, RNR Korean chestnut bread and doorbuster sales like a 15-pound bag of Haru Haru rice for a $1 with a $200 purchase. The store has an expanded cooking appliances and home goods area, with Sanrio merchandise, dishes, rice cookers and electric griddles. Another big draw for the store is a food hall that provides 11 dining options. Brian Kwon, H Mart's president, said the food hall will make H Mart Westminster a destination for local community members who are looking to Asian grocery stores to not only provide culturally specific ingredients and products, but experiences, too. 'H Mart is excited to bring an authentic taste of Asia to your neighborhood and we hope our customers share in our enthusiasm,' Kwon said in a statement. 'Our market is all about celebrating the richness and variety of Asian cuisine, making it easier than ever to find the flavors you love, right here at home.' The food hall is home to Moobongri Soondae Express, which serves authentic Korean blood sausage, soups and stews; Paik's Noodle, known for Korean-style Chinese food; and Chang Hwa Dang, which serves Korean dumplings. KZ Mori serves Japanese fusion cuisine while Yoo's Place and Goobne Chicken offer Korean street food options and Eggcellent features egg sandwiches and coffee. The food hall also houses two Korean concepts that found fame through mukbang videos; Jaws Topokki, which specializes in tteokbokki (also called topokki), a spicy braised rice cake soup, and Myungrang Hot Dog, which serves Korean-style corn dogs. Both concepts were previously only found locally at the Source in Buena Park, a culture-defining hub for Orange County's Koreatown. Other recognizable brands include the popular French Asian bakery chain, Tous Les Jours and the Taiwanese bubble tea concept, Gong Cha. Three of the other five H Marts in Orange County are located in the city of Irvine. The chain's newest location sits near the Huntington Beach border, in proximity to Little Saigon and the large Asian American communities found in Fountain Valley, Garden Grove and Buena Park. Orange County has an appetite for Asian grocery stores, as the county also welcomed its third Toyko Central store at Heritage Plaza shopping center in Irvine just a couple of weeks ago and anticipates the first SoCal T&T Supermarket, Canada's largest Asian grocery chain, to open in Irvine in 2026. 'It is nice to have [an H Mart] closer to where we are so we don't to go all the way to Garden Grove or Irvine,' said Arthur Nguyen, a Fountain Valley resident who shopped with his girlfriend on the store's opening day. H Mart Westminster is located at 16450 Beach Blvd. and is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
