Southeast Asia trafficked cybervictims freed but far from home

Fearing he was being trafficked for his organs, it was a relief to know he could keep them, he said. Instead he was forced to spend his time creating fake profiles to engage a minimum of five people every day in online relationships.
'I would talk to the target like, 'Baby please invest in this, you will get good profit',' said Palit, who wanted only his first name disclosed.
Well known among forced labourers, Jinnmonca's personal Facebook pings with messages, typically four new people each day, begging for help and sharing stories such as Palit's.
Is help coming?
The cross-border nature of trafficking rescue makes the repatriation process difficult and slow, said Amy Miller, regional director for Southeast Asia at Acts of Mercy International, which supports survivors.
'They are complaining about the wait time,' she said. 'There are people who are sick that are maybe not getting treatment. It's a tinder box ready to go up in flames.'
The problem of how to process and provide for so many victims is deterring Myanmar's law enforcement from further rescue operations, Miller said, so the potential for future operations is unclear.
'I don't feel super confident that this is a reform of the compounds or that they're going to shut down,' she said.
Targeting workers
Jinnmonca said he believes the most effective way to protect against trafficking and the scams is to imprison the masterminds at the top.
'If [we do] not fix this problem, it will double.'
Instead, he said, the workers are targeted by authorities.
When Palit, who is soft-spoken and quick to smile, was released from a scam centre in November 2023 with 328 other people, 10 of them were arrested. They were accused of being complicit in cybercrime and kidnapping because their language skills gave them leadership roles in the compound's living quarters.
But they were victims as well, said Jinnmonca, and such arrests mean workers rescued from the clutches of criminal gangs in one country may face prison in another.

'I haunt them': Psychic talks to Joslin's 'spirit'

Paranormal justice expert Kandis Starr has shared another video of her session with what she believes is the 'spirit' of little Joslin Smith, who went missing last year. And this time, the US medium hopes her message will bring 'closure' to the loved ones of the little girl. Last week, Joslin's mom, Kelly Smith, and two others, Jacquin 'Boeta' Appollis and Steveno van Rhyn, were given life sentences for trafficking the Saldanha Bay girl. Although she has not been found, Kandiss believes the blonde-haired, green-eyed girl is deceased. Kicking off her YouTube video, Kandis Starr revealed that she had developed a strong connection to Joslin Smith's 'spirit'. The US medium has shared several videos of her supernatural encounters, which she believes are with the Saldanha Bay girl. Responding to her naysayers, Kandis said: 'I began this work with one purpose: to give victims a voice. This didnt start as content, it started as a calling. This isn't for clicks, it is for closure.' During a spirit box session – a device that can interpret radio waves – Kandis Starr connected to her spirit guides and whom she believes is also Joslin Smith. 'I'm here, can I talk?' a voice asks the woman. Kandis then gave 'Joslin' the opportunity to take freely, following her mother, Kelly Smith's life sentence last week. A voice said the following… 'Sick mother' 'Fights off that man.' 'I'm hurt, I'm being hurt, I'm just little' 'They have money.' 'Has lied…is a lie' 'They are evil.' When Kandis asked 'Joslin' to share details about her past locations, the voice responded: 'Landfill…the couch' During the session, Kandis Starr also asked the voice if 'Joslin' was behind an eerie court incident. It responded: 'Yes…I haunt them'. Last week, a viral video showed a light flickering in the Western Cape High Court above the heads of Kelly Smith, Jacquin 'Boeta' Appollis, and Steveno van Rhyn. In the clip, Kelly glances up at the light. According to many social media users, a flickering light indicates the presence of spirits. @rockfairy_0 the fact that steveno even noticed lol.. . . . . . . . .#joslinsmith #truecrime #southafricatiktok #afrikaanstiktoks #news #courtroom #crimetok #missingchild #fyp #truecrime #southafricatiktok #afrikaanstiktoks #news #courtroom #kellysmith #fypシ゚ #meme #darkhumor .#CapCut ♬ Me and the Devil – Soap&Skin Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 . Renowned Namibian businessman mauled to death by lion

Namibia's Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism has confirmed that a prominent Namibian businessman was mauled to death by a lion on Friday. Republikein, an Afrikaans newspaper published in Namibia, reported on Friday that Bernd Kebbel (59), the former owner of Off-road Centre, who is also known in desert lion research circles, was camping with his wife, Conny, and a group of family and friends in the dry Hoanib River, 4km from Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp in the Sesfontein area. Kebbel apparently climbed down from his roof tent early on Friday morning and was attacked by a lioness, pulled down and bitten on his head and neck. He succumbed to his wounds at the scene, according to Kunene regional crime investigations co-ordinator Eric Clay. The ministry's spokesperson, Ndeshipanda Hamunyela, says that although Kebbel's friends were able to chase the lioness away, it was unfortunately too late, and he was already dead. According to Namibian police spokesperson Inspector Immanuel Iiduwa, a case of human-animal conflict has been opened in the Kunene region. Members of the Namibian Police Force were at the scene. According to Eagle FM Namibian, the lioness was euthanised. Friends of well-known businessman and nature lover Bernd Kebbel (59), who generously supported lion research, say it is both ironic and tragic that a desert-adapted lioness ended his life early on Friday morning. — Namibian Sun (@namibiansun) June 2, 2025 Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel.
