Helen Mirren Wants More Movies About Real Women in the Secret Service, as Opposed to a Female 007

Helen Mirren thinks there should be more movies about real women who have operated as Secret Service agents, instead of adding a female James Bond to that particular cinematic universe.
'The whole concept of James Bond is drenched and born out of profound sexism,' she told The Standard in an interview published Thursday.
'Women have always been a major and incredibly important part of the Secret Service, they always have been,' she continued. 'And very brave. If you hear about what women did in the French Resistance, they're amazingly, unbelievably courageous. So I would tell real stories about extraordinary women who've worked in that world.'
Mirren plays a mob wife in the Paramount+ series 'MobLand' to her husband portrayed by former Bond actor Pierce Brosnan, who knows a thing or two about crime-related stories. The duo previously co-starred in the movie 'The Long Good Friday' in 1990.
'I was never a great ward [of Bond],' Mirren noted. 'I'm a huge fan of Pierce Brosnan, I mean massive fan. I mean, oh my god. Obviously, he's gorgeous and everything, and I think he's fabulous in 'MobLand,' but he also happens to be one of the nicest people you'll ever have the pleasure to work with. And indeed Daniel Craig, who I've met and know a little bit. Again, a very lovely gracious person.'
'The whole series of James Bond, it was not my thing. It really wasn't. I never liked James Bond. I never liked the way women were in James Bond,' she concluded.
Amazon MGM Studios took over the Bond franchise in February, a move that came as a surprise after decades of control by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. The franchise had been in the hands of the creative individuals since Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman purchased the rights to Ian Fleming's novels in 1961. After Broccoli died, his daughter, Barbara, took over alongside his stepson Wilson.
'My life has been dedicated to maintaining and building upon the extraordinary legacy that was handed to Michael and me by our father, producer Cubby Broccoli,' Barbara said in a statement. 'I have had the honour of working closely with four of the tremendously talented actors who have played 007 and thousands of wonderful artists within the industry. With the conclusion of 'No Time to Die' and Michael retiring from the films, I feel it is time to focus on my other projects.'
More recently, Jen Salke just exited Amazon MGM this past week — in part over the 007 franchise — with the studio still intent on releasing a theatrical movie slate in 2025.

‘Couples Therapy' is renewed for Season 5

June 6 (UPI) -- Paramount+ announced Friday that Couples Therapy is getting a fifth season. The news arrives after the second installment of Season 4 began streaming May 23 on Paramount+ with Showtime. Viewership increased 30% across platforms when compared to the previous season, a press release states. The series follows Dr. Orna Guralnik's real-life therapy sessions with various couples she is counseling through relationship challenges. Couples Therapy showcases both the breakdowns and the breakthroughs, according to an official synopsis. Season 4B introduced four new couples. "People can just talk about nothing," said Guralnik in a recent preview for the episodes. "Either they just bicker endlessly or obsess over something that doesn't matter -- that's all noise... But as analysts we're trained to listen in for that and to find a way to move from noise to signal." 2025 United Press International, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Paramount controlling shareholder Shari Redstone diagnosed with thyroid cancer

Media mogul Shari Redstone, CBS parent Paramount's controlling shareholder, has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. "Shari Redstone was diagnosed with thyroid cancer earlier this spring. While it has been a challenging period, she is maintaining all professional and philanthropic activities throughout her treatment, which is ongoing. She and her family are grateful that her prognosis is excellent," Redstone's spokesperson told Fox News Digital. The 71-year-old has frequently been in the news this year as she seeks the Trump administration's approval of a multibillion-dollar planned merger with Skydance Media and has given lawyers the green light to settle President Donald Trump's election interference lawsuit against CBS News, although no deal has been reached. Redstone wanted the opinion of doctors "about two months ago after experiencing fatigue and other symptoms," according to The New York Times, which first reported the diagnosis. She underwent surgery in May. The Times noted that she was quickly diagnosed and surgeons removed her thyroid gland but were unable to remove all the cancer cells because they'd spread to her vocal cords. Redstone controls more than three-quarters of Paramount's Class A voting shares through National Amusements, the company she took control of in 2016 when her media mogul father, Sumner Redstone, was deemed too incapacitated to run the company. He died in 2020. Redstone, who recused herself from settlement discussions related to the Trump lawsuit in February, isn't thrilled with being tied up in litigation with the sitting president and wants to get things resolved. Fox News Digital confirmed last week that Trump rejected a $15 million offer to settle his lawsuit. The talks are ongoing, but the president's legal team is demanding at least $25 million and an apology from CBS News. Many industry insiders believe the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will wait until the lawsuit is in the rearview mirror before deciding if the planned merger with Skydance Media will be approved. Redstone is set for a significant windfall if she's able to flip Paramount to Skydance. Bloomberg reported last year that she would receive $180 million in severance on top of the roughly $350 million she would pocket from the merger. Skydance Media CEO David Ellison, who would take control of CBS as head of the newly formed Paramount Skydance Corp. if the merger is finalized, was aware of Redstone's cancer diagnosis, according to the Times.

Paramount Plus renews 'Couples Therapy' for season 5 after 30% jump in viewership

The Paramount Plus docuseries "Couples Therapy" saw an explosive Season 4B premiere earlier this month, enough to convince Paramount to order up another season of relationship drama for couples guru Dr Orna Guralnik to unpack. "Couples Therapy" has been renewed for season 5, Paramount Plus announced on Friday. According to Showtime's internal streaming data, the premiere for the second half of Season 4 drew in 30% more viewers than the premiere for the prior season. You can catch all four seasons of "Couples Therapy" on Paramount Plus with Showtime, and new episodes premiere on Fridays. The show features renowned psychologist and psychoanalyst Dr. Orna Guralnik as she skillfully navigates therapy sessions with real-world couples, uncovering raw emotions, painful truths and transformative breakthroughs along the way. So far, season 4B has included a deaf man and his hearing partner struggling to balance sexual freedom with commitment, as well as a therapist-writer couple stuck in a cycle of sacrifice and mounting resentment. "Couples Therapy" first premiered in 2019 and has long been a critical darling. It earned the Television Critics Association (TCA) Award for Outstanding Achievement in Reality Programming in 2021 and the American Cinema Editors (ACE) Award for Best Edited Non-Scripted Series in 2024. It's also received award nominations from the International Documentary Association, 2023 TCA Awards, 2025 ACE Awards, Cinema Eye Honor Awards and Critics Choice Real TV Awards. With season 5 locked in, that makes "Couples Therapy" the second-longest running series Showtime has on the air. It's beaten only by "The Chi," which debuted in 2018 and was recently renewed for its eighth season. Other Showtime series like its popular survival drama series "Yellowjackets" and spy thriller "The Agency" have also been picked up for additional seasons in recent months. So if you have Paramount Plus right now, there are plenty of quality shows in the pipeline to convince you to keep your subscription.
