Recovery in sales volume to propel Nestle
PETALING JAYA: Nestle (M) Bhd is poised for a stronger second half of 2025 (2H25), underpinned by easing raw material prices, stable margins and a steady recovery in sales volume, following a challenging year marked by cost pressures and boycott-related disruptions. According to Maybank Investment Bank (IB) Research, Nestle's sales volume has shown progressive recovery in 1H25 and this remains its key focus in 2H25. The research house raised its 2025 to 2027 earnings forecasts by up to 22%, citing 'a clearer route to recovery in relation to its brand image and cost pressures from raw materials.' Maybank IB Research said that Nestle's second-quarter revenue rose 10% year-on-year (y-o-y), driven by price hikes and systematic sales volume recovery. It added that 'the group is on a stronger footing to enhance market competitiveness and rebuild market share across its product categories'. Meanwhile, CGS International Research remained cautious, citing stretched valuations. 'We believe valuations are rich at 35.8 times 2025 price-earnings ratio with a 2.4% 2025 dividend yield,' the research house said, maintaining a 'reduce' call with a target price of RM78. It acknowledged a volume recovery in 2Q25 following the easing of boycotts and noted that 'export revenue growth was helped by growing demand for halal products in both existing and new markets'. It added that management saw stability in margins supported by 'ongoing hedging efforts, and recent easing in cocoa and coffee prices'. Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research pointed to a mixed outlook, with operational efforts offsetting persistent external challenges. 'The group continues to navigate rising commodity costs through a steadfast focus on operational efficiency, cost savings initiatives, and greater digitalisation,' it said. Despite selective price increases, HLIB Research cautioned that 'the ongoing boycott against Western-affiliated brands continued to dampen demand' and is unlikely to fully revert soon. Nonetheless, the the research house highlighted that product innovation remained a bright spot, with launches such as Nescafe Coffee Concentrate and Kit Kat 3-in-1 reinforcing the group's pivot toward health-focused and convenience-led offerings. HLIB Research reiterated its 'hold' rating with an unchanged target price of RM80. CIMB Research also held a steady view, with no changes to its forecasts or 'hold' rating. It noted that 'Nestle does not intend to implement major selling price adjustments, opting instead to focus on maintaining affordability in view of the current subdued consumer spending environment.' The research house underscored Nestle's long-term growth strategy centred on innovation, including the 'world's first drinkable KitKat' as aligned with global priorities. 'Gross profit margins are expected to remain stable in 2H25,' it added, citing digitalisation and efficiency initiatives as cushions against cost pressures. TA Research struck an optimistic tone, raising its earnings forecasts by up to 7.6% and its target price to RM102.80. It attributed the gains to higher sales assumptions and robust brand investments. 'Operating expenses rose 4% y-o-y mainly attributed to higher marketing investments,' the research house noted, pointing to promotional campaigns tied to new launches and Milo's 75th anniversary. It said the efforts are supportive of top line growth, with the potential to strengthen brand equity, enhance customer loyalty, and reinforce Nestle's market leadership.

Changes in govt hasn't boosted Bumiputera middle class, says Rafizi
The statistics department recently said the Bumiputera community is expected to grow from 69.4% in 2020 to 79.4% in 2060, while the Chinese and Indian communities are projected to decline to 14.8% and 4.7%, respectively. PETALING JAYA : Former economy minister Rafizi Ramli says successive changes in government have failed to improve the productivity of the Bumiputera middle class, a key issue he believes lies at the heart of Malay insecurity. Speaking on the latest episode of the Yang Berhenti Menteri podcast, the Pandan MP said boosting Bumiputera participation and performance in the economy was crucial not only for long-term development, but also for bridging racial divides and achieving political stability. 'We've had many changes in government, but we still haven't managed to energise the Bumiputera middle class to be as productive and dynamic as the Chinese middle class,' he said. 'If we can close that gap, we'll reduce economic insecurity. And when you reduce that insecurity, Malays will stop saying things like 'habis la kita' (we're doomed).' Rafizi said Malaysia's political polarisation is deeply tied to economic disparities, especially among ethnic groups. 'When we talk about the economy, population breakdown matters — because that's your market. 'As the Bumiputera population grows, their role in strengthening the economy becomes more important,' he said. He said this was the rationale behind the Bumiputera Economic Transformation Plan 2035 (Putera35), which was designed to improve Bumiputera participation in the economy without sidelining other communities. Rafizi stressed that the initiative was not about increasing entitlement or promoting ethnic quotas, such as insisting all CEOs must be Malay. Instead, he said Putera35 was meant to create policies that are fair, sustainable and result-oriented. He added that closing the economic gap was a more effective path to political stability than relying on campaign speeches before general elections. Earlier this month, the statistics department said Malaysia's population is projected to peak at 42.38 million in 2059 before gradually declining. Trump administration to supercharge AI sales to allies, loosen environmental rules
The Trump administration released a new artificial intelligence blueprint on Wednesday that aims to loosen environmental rules and vastly expand AI exports to allies, in a bid to maintain the American edge over China in the critical technology. President Donald Trump marked the plan's release with a speech where he laid out the stakes of the technological arms race with China, calling it a fight that will define the 21st century. 'America is the country that started the AI race. And as President of the United States, I'm here today to declare that America is going to win it,' Trump said. The plan, which includes some 90 recommendations, calls for the export of U.S. AI software and hardware abroad as well as a crackdown on state laws deemed too restrictive to let it flourish, a marked departure from predecessor Joe Biden's 'high fence' approach that limited global access to coveted AI chips. 'We also have to have a single federal standard, not 50 different states regulating this industry in the future,' Trump said. Michael Kratsios, head of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, told reporters on Wednesday the departments of Commerce and State will partner with the industry to 'deliver secure full-stack AI export packages, including hardware models, software applications and standards to America's friends and allies around the world.' An expansion in exports of a full suite of AI products could benefit AI chip juggernauts Nvidia and AMD as well as AI model giants Alphabet's Google, Microsoft, OpenAI and Facebook parent Meta. Trump signed three executive orders on Wednesday that incorporated elements of the action plan, including the loosening of environmental rules, establishing rules for chip exports and seeking to limit political bias in AI technology. Biden feared U.S. adversaries like China could harness AI chips produced by companies like Nvidia and AMD to supercharge its military and harm allies. The former president, who left office in January, imposed a raft of restrictions on U.S. exports of AI chips to China and other countries that it feared could divert the semiconductors to America's top global rival. Trump rescinded Biden's executive order aimed at promoting competition, protecting consumers and ensuring AI was not used for misinformation. He also rescinded Biden's so-called AI diffusion rule, which capped the amount of American AI computing capacity some countries were allowed to obtain via U.S. AI chip imports. 'Our edge (in AI) is not something that we can sort of rest on our laurels,' Vice President JD Vance said in a separate appearance at the event, which was organized by White House AI and crypto czar David Sacks and his co-hosts on the 'All-In' podcast. 'If we're regulating ourselves to death and allowing the Chinese to catch up to us, that's not something ... we should blame the Chinese for..., that is something we should blame our own leaders for, for having stupid policies that allow other countries to catch up with America,' Vance said. The AI plan, according to a senior administration official, does not address national security concerns around Nvidia's H20 chip, which powers AI models and was designed to walk right up to the line of prior restrictions on Chinese AI chip access. Trump blocked the export of the H20 to China in April but allowed the company to resume sales earlier this month, sparking rare public criticism from fellow Republicans. FAST-TRACKING DATA CENTERS The plan also calls for fast-tracking the construction of data centers by loosening environmental regulations and utilizing federal land to expedite development of the projects, including any power supplies. The administration will seek to establish new exclusions for data centers under the National Environmental Policy Act and streamline permits under the Clean Water Act. Trump directed his administration in January to develop the plan. Trump is expected to take additional actions in the upcoming weeks that will help Big Tech secure the vast amounts of electricity it needs to power the energy-guzzling data centers needed for the rapid expansion of AI, Reuters previously reported. U.S. power demand is hitting record highs this year after nearly two decades of stagnation as AI and cloud computing data centers balloon in number and size across the country. The export expansion plans take a page from deals unveiled in May that gave the United Arab Emirates expanded access to advanced artificial intelligence chips from the United States after previously facing restrictions over Washington's concerns that China could access the technology. - Reuters
