Bird flu outbreak in US Nagar, over 5k chickens die
However, at GB Pant University's poultry farm in Pantnagar, where over 2,000 chickens died between Aug 13 and 19, tests ruled out bird flu. Officials said the deaths may be linked to another poultry disease or environmental factors, which are still being investigated.
"As a precaution, sale of chicken has been suspended and entry of visitors has been completely banned. The entire premises is being sanitised daily, along with lime sprinkling in and around the farm," said Dr Ripusudan Kumar, deputy director of the poultry farm.
He added that all 22 employees have been provided with masks, protective suits and long boots.
Meanwhile, poultry deaths in Kichha and Khatima have raised alarm. In Kichha alone, 2,222 chickens tested positive for bird flu, while in Khatima's Nadanna village of Chakarpur, over 1,000 birds perished at a private farm on Wednesday morning. Samples have been sent for further testing.
District authorities have imposed strict containment measures.
In Kichha's Kishanpur, a private poultry farm was sealed for three months after sanitisation. "After confirmation of bird flu, transportation of poultry within a 10 km radius has been strictly prohibited," said SDM Gaurav Pandey. "People are also advised to avoid consuming chicken and eggs for some days as a safety measure."
The outbreak has also raised concerns in Bageshwar, where bird flu was earlier confirmed in one chicken after 77 samples from Soli village were sent to the laboratory in Bareilly.
Alarmed by the spread, Almora district authorities have tightened biosecurity protocols at its zoo and rescue centres.
"Tourists are allowed entry into Almora Zoo only after hand sanitisation. Staff members have been instructed to maintain strict hygiene, and maintaining distance is being ensured between visitors and wildlife," said Kishore Goswami, forest officer at Almora Mrig Vihar.
Similar precautions have been enforced in Jim Corbett National Park. "Employees are strictly prohibited from entering rescue centres without safety kits. Staff handling tigers and leopards must wear PPE kits at all times," forest officials said.

Dr Ajay Chauhan, superintendent of the Govt Hospital for Mental Health, said that the number of children and teens brought daily for counselling is around 15. "The number has increased in the past few years. The issue often lies in low level or lack of self-control and understanding of repercussions. Sometimes they lack emotional maturity, and thus regular interaction by parents, teachers, and mentor figures can help," he said. "Children today are exposed to imagery of bravado and violence, and minors are often consumed by it. Compared to a decade ago, children today also experience isolation. The issue of verbal and physical violence is multi-faceted and cannot be explained in simplistic terms. Several schools today have counsellors who are experts in addressing child and teenage issues, which is a welcome step," he said. Mizoram's hypertension, overweight rates outpace nat'l figures: Survey
Aizawl: In a concerning revelation, the National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-5 has highlighted that Mizoram's population is grappling with higher-than-average rates of overweight individuals and hypertension, surpassing national figures. According to the survey conducted between 2019 and 2021, 31.9% of males and 24.2% of females in Mizoram are classified as overweight, a statistic that has raised alarms among health officials. Dr Lily Chhakchhuak, the mission director of the state's National Health Mission (NHM), shared these findings during a two-day workshop on cardiovascular diseases in Aizawl. The event, organised by the Mizoram Health Systems Strengthening Project , aimed to equip healthcare professionals from govt-run health centers with the necessary skills to tackle these growing health issues. The survey also revealed that 33.6% of males and 23.4% of females in Mizoram suffer from hypertension, while 17.3% of males and 15.2% of females are diabetic. Dr Chhakchhuak emphasised the need for early detection of cardiovascular diseases, given the high prevalence of these conditions in the state. Highlighting the global impact of cardiovascular diseases, she noted that in 2022, 19.8 million people worldwide died from such conditions, accounting for 35% of total deaths. In 2021, cardiovascular diseases were responsible for 38% of deaths among individuals under 70 years of age. Sangli doc told to pay Rs7.5L for med negligence causing death
Kolhapur: A doctor in Sangli has been ordered by the district consumer court to pay Rs7.5 lakh to the mother of a four-year-old girl who died after receiving treatment. The court ruled that the doctor provided "deficient service" by failing to perform necessary tests before beginning treatment. The incident occurred about seven years ago when the girl, Avantika Sagar Sale, was admitted to the hospital run by paediatrician Vidyadhar Patil. Her mother, Sheetal, claimed that her daughter's death was caused by a delay in receiving the correct treatment. On Aug 14, the consumer court ordered the doctor to make the payment with interest from the date the complaint was filed. The doctor was also ordered to pay an additional Rs1 lakh for mental anguish and Rs 20,000 towards legal costs. Shailendra Kelkar, advocate for the complainant mother, said, "This case was rare since the treatment was carried out without relevant tests. The symptoms clearly indicated dengue or malaria, but the specific tests were not carried out despite laboratories being available in the town. Even after the platelet count declined rapidly, the doctor went ahead with the treatment without understanding the cause.
