Senior Health Ministry Official Scammed Of Rs 27 Lakhs In Currency Market Investment Fraud
A senior Union Health Ministry official was scammed of Rs 27 lakhs on the pretext of investing his money in the currency market, reported ANI, citing Delhi police officials. In the complaint, the victim alleged that he was told by the fraudster that his money will double in a year. The incident dates back to 2023, when the accused approached and convinced the official to invest his money.
'Victim alleged that he informed him that he is investing & trading the money in the currency market, and he would return double the principal amount to the complainant within a span of one year. Hence, on this allurement and inducement, he agreed to give him an amount of twenty-seven lakhs," Delhi police said.
A complaint was filed at the South district's cyber police station on August 11, and the police have booked the accused under sections 308/318(4)/319/340.
The incident comes to light only a few days after three men, including one graduate from the London School of Economics, were arrested by a joint team of PS DBG Road and PS Cyber, Central District, Delhi Police, in connection with a money extortion case.
The group, who were traced to Thailand, used to scam people by extorting money through international WhatsApp calls and cryptocurrency payments. They pretended to belong to a notorious gangster to instill fear in their victims.
In a separate incident that took place in Mumbai on August 16, the police arrested four cyber fraudsters for allegedly duping a businessman from Mumbai of Rs 5.24 crore by posing as executives of a Dubai-based investment company.
The incident surfaced when the accused invited the victim to Dubai, only for the victim to discover that the company did not actually exist.

National Food Security Act: Centre asks Punjab to weed out 11 lakh 'suspicious' beneficiaries
CHANDIGARH: The Centre has asked the Punjab Government to verify the antecedents of 11 lakh 'suspicious' beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) and weed them out by September 30. But, as the paddy procurement season is set to start and the state food and civil supplies department officials will be busy, sources said that the state would seek six months time for the verification and weeding out process. Besides, the government will seek details of the database from the Centre before the verification starts. Under NFSA, there are reportedly eight crore 'suspicious' beneficiaries across the country of which 11 lakh are in Punjab. They were identified from the database of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, Central Board of Direct Taxes, Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, sources said. The Centre recently shared the data with the state government. It is learnt that these beneficiaries are either income tax payers, directors in companies, own more than five acres of land or a four-wheeler. So, these beneficiaries cannot be considered in the economically ba category, the union government pointed out. The NFSA is a landmark law that aims to provide subsidized food grains to a large portion of the population. Sources in the state food and civil supplies department said that Punjab has 40.50 lakh ration card holders covering a population of 1.53 crore people under NFSA. The beneficiaries are provided 5 kg of wheat per person in the family, every month at a nominal cost of Rs 2 per kg. A total of 32,500 metric tonnes of wheat is being distributed to the people under the scheme, each month.

As Novo Nordisk 's sales of its blockbuster weight-loss drug Wegovy boomed, the Danish drugmaker raced to expand manufacturing capacity and sales outreach with a hiring spree that almost doubled staff numbers over five years. "I don't want to limit myself in terms of where I look for savings, and salaries are a cost item. I will go through everything," said CEO Maziar Mike Doustdar on August 7, his first day in the job. Two weeks later, on Wednesday, Novo said it had implemented a global hiring freeze for non-critical roles. Novo hinted at this during its second-quarter results, saying it would begin deprioritising sales of Rybelsus, its older type 2 diabetes treatment. Sales of the drug have declined, eclipsed by soaring demand for Ozempic, which shares the same active ingredient as Wegovy. "That is probably not a coincidence," said TD Cowen analyst Michael Nedelcovych. "When companies try to cut costs, they probably look first to a sales force for an ailing drug." Novo built a new U.S. sales force to market Wegovy to doctors rather than rely on staff who were already promoting Ozempic, three former employees familiar with the drug's launch told Reuters. That meant more costs, and at times the teams overlapped in outreach to the same healthcare providers, they said. All asked not to be named in order to speak frankly about a former employer. The Novo Nordisk spokesperson declined to comment on the structure of its business. In response to the initial unprecedented demand for Wegovy, Novo also invested billions to expand factories in Denmark and the United States. The company said in early 2024 that around 70% of new hires in the previous two to three years were in the manufacturing division. The spokesperson said that last year, 49% of new hires were related to manufacturing, including around 3,200 employees from Catalent, a contract drugmaker acquired last year by Novo Holdings, Novo Nordisk's controlling shareholder. Novo could also first turn to functions such as communications or administrative roles for cuts, because reductions in sales or manufacturing could hinder its ability to regain market share, said Simon Birkso Larsen, founder and head of Pipeline Clarity, a Copenhagen-based pharmaceutical industry consultancy that does not count Novo as a client. Larsen was a Novo Nordisk employee from 2015 to 2017. "Novo hired so rapidly that it has become difficult to figure out who does what in the are limits to how many people you can integrate and still be effective," he said.
