Earthquake of magnitude 3.4 hits Nepal

There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage. Further details are awaited. Shallow earthquakes are more dangerous than deeper ones due to their greater energy release closer to the Earth's surface, causing stronger ground shaking and increased damage to structures and casualties, compared to deeper earthquakes, which lose energy as they travel to the surface.
Nepal is highly earthquake-prone due to its location on a convergent boundary where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide. This collision generates immense pressure and stress, which is released as earthquakes. Nepal is also situated in a subduction zone where the Indian Plate is sliding beneath the Eurasian Plate, further increasing stress and strain.
Nepal lies in the Himalayan region, a zone of intense seismic activity caused by the ongoing collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This collision results in the Indian plate pushing beneath the Eurasian plate in a process called subduction, creating immense pressure and strain on the Earth's crust. The subduction zone further amplifies the stress, making Nepal highly vulnerable to earthquakes.
The collision also contributes to the uplift of the Himalayan mountains, adding to the overall seismic activity in the region.Nepal has a long history of earthquakes, including devastating events like the 2015 earthquake.

Earthquake Of Magnitude 6.2 Strikes Russia's Kuril Islands; Aftershocks Continue In Region
A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck Russia's Kuril Islands on Friday, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The Earthquake occurred at 11:50 PM IST on August 1, at a depth of 32 kilometers below the Earth's surface. According to NCS data, the earthquake's epicenter was located at a latitude of 50.19°N and a longitude of 159.14°E. So far, no casualties or damages have been reported from the region. This quake is followed by a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck off the Russian coast earlier this week. That powerful quake is considered one of the strongest ever recorded, ranked in sixth place in terms of magnitude. After that major earthquake, the region has experienced around 125 aftershocks of magnitude 4.4 or higher. Among these, three aftershocks were of magnitude 6.0 or greater. The strongest aftershock, measuring 6.9, occurred about 45 minutes after the main shock. Another significant aftershock measuring 6.4 was recorded around 200 miles southwest of the main quake's epicenter just before 11 a.m. local time on Wednesday. Experts say aftershocks are usually strongest in the first few hours or days after the main earthquake and tend to decrease in strength and number over time. Seismologists also noted that shallow earthquakes, like the recent ones, can cause more damage than deeper ones. This is because seismic waves from shallow quakes reach the surface quickly and shake the ground more violently. Meanwhile, a tsunami alert that was issued for Hawaii following the massive earthquake near Russia has been cancelled. Earlier tsunami warnings for both the US coast and Japan have also been downgraded to advisories, as reported by CNN.

More details are awaited. (ANI)

6.2 Magnitude Quake Hits Russia's Kuril Islands Days After Massive Tremor
An Earthquake of magnitude 6.2 was recorded on the east of the Kuril Islands late on Friday, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) on Saturday. As per the NCS, the earthquake occurred at 23:50 Indian Standard Time (IST) on Friday at a depth of 32 kilometres. It was recorded at Lat: 50.19 N, Long: 159.14 E. "EQ of M: 6.2, On: 01/08/2025 23:50:49 IST, Lat: 50.19 N, Long: 159.14 E, Depth: 32 Km, Location: East of Kuril Islands." The massive 8.8 magnitude quake on Wednesday is tied for the sixth strongest ever recorded. There were no casualties in Russia, the Kremlin said. Around 125 aftershocks of magnitude 4.4 or greater have occurred near Russia in the more than 16 hours since the massive 8.8 earthquake struck off the coast, according to data from the US Geological Survey, CNN reported. Of those, three have been magnitude 6.0 or greater, with the strongest being a 6.9 that occurred about 45 minutes after the main shock. Strong aftershocks continue to rock the region, with a 6.4 magnitude aftershock striking around 200 miles southwest of yesterday's main quake's epicentre just before 11 am (local time) on Wednesday. Aftershocks are generally strongest and most numerous in the hours to days after the main earthquake, decreasing in number and intensity as time goes on. Shallow earthquakes are generally more dangerous than deep earthquakes. This is because the seismic waves from shallow earthquakes have a shorter distance to travel to the surface, resulting in stronger ground shaking and potentially more damage to structures and greater casualties. Meanwhile, the tsunami advisory for Hawaii has been lifted after a massive earthquake off Russia's far eastern coast put the region on high alert. Tsunami warnings for the US coastline and Japan were downgraded to advisories earlier, as per CNN.
