Khareef business gets boost with over 600 work permits
The Ministry of Labour, through its Dhofar Directorate, has issued more than 600 temporary work permits since the start of the Khareef Dhofar Season 2025, as part of efforts to facilitate commercial activity and support entrepreneurs during the peak tourism period in the governorate.
According to the Director General of the Ministry's Labour Directorate in Dhofar, the temporary permits — provided free of charge — allow the hiring of expatriate workers for non-Omani-exclusive jobs, particularly roles that citizens are typically reluctant to take. He explained that the initiative helps regulate seasonal employment, meeting the surge in demand from small businesses and entrepreneurs, especially in sectors such as food services, logistics and event management.
The official added that the service has seen strong demand from owners of small and seasonal enterprises, offering a legal and flexible mechanism to bring in workforce support without breaching labour regulations.
Permit holders are also expected to employ and supervise Omani staff, ensuring that nationals remain engaged in seasonal business operations.
He stressed that the initiative reflects the Ministry's commitment to promoting entrepreneurship and reducing administrative burdens, by waiving fees and streamlining the application and approval process. It also ensures legal compliance and labour protection across all operational fronts.
This effort comes as part of wider government measures to encourage local and seasonal investment in Dhofar Governorate, which welcomes tens of thousands of visitors during the annual monsoon season.
The facilitation is expected to boost the quality and scale of tourism and retail services, while maintaining a well-regulated business environment.
With tourism activities intensifying across Dhofar's wilayats, demand for temporary permits is expected to grow further in the coming weeks — empowering private sector participation and supporting local economic momentum through legal seasonal employment channels.

Labour Forum 2025 begins in Salalah
Salalah: The Labour Forum 2025, organised by the Ministry of Labour, officially opened on Sunday at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Compound for Culture and Entertainment in Salalah. The event has drawn extensive participation, with over 1,000 attendees from within Oman and abroad, representing government and private entities, academic institutions, and regional and international organisations. The forum will run for 12 days. The opening ceremony was held under the patronage of Dr. Mahad Said Ba'awin, Minister of Labour. The forum serves as a national platform for constructive dialogue on the future of Oman's labour market. It features the presentation and discussion of 33 working papers addressing key challenges and opportunities, alongside showcasing pioneering local and international experiences and practices. He highlighted Oman's progressive steps in this field, including the issuance of the new Labour Law and Social Protection Law, as well as the adoption of integrated strategies encompassing education, training, employment, and modern work models. In his turn, Mohammed Hassan Al Abidly, Director General of the Executive Bureau of the GCC Labour and Social Affairs Ministers Council, pointed out that rapid economic, technological, and environmental changes pose challenges that require joint efforts to develop skills, employment models, and social protection to ensure an effective and equitable response. Meanwhile, Azar Bayramov, Director General of the Islamic Cooperation Labour Center, discussed the center's role in bridging cooperation between governments, workers, and employers, as well as providing capacity-building programmes for member states. He announced a specialised training session post-forum on effective leadership in occupational safety and health in Oman. The forum aims to enhance innovation and professional development by highlighting the latest labour market technologies and innovations, improve the work environment and develop labour policies in line with economic, technological, and social transformations, in addition to strengthening international cooperation through the exchange of expertise and knowledge. The forum continues until 14 August, featuring an exhibition of student projects from vocational colleges, - an open meeting between the Minister of Labour and business owners, a Future of Work Forum, a Government Transformation and Sustainable Leadership Conference, as well as a train-the-trainer program on occupational safety and health leadership. This forum aligns with the Ministry of Labour's efforts to develop labour market policies and anticipate future trends in accordance with Oman Vision 2040. MTCIT launches gaming development camp to build digital skills
Muscat – Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology launched a video game development training camp to equip young jobseekers with skills in one of the world's fastest-growing digital sectors on Sunday. The initiative, launched in partnership with Al Nahda Training Institute and Unity – a global leading platform to create games and interactive experiences – is part of the ministry's Makeen programme to support national digital capabilities. Held at Al Araimi Boulevard in Seeb, the event was inaugurated under the patronage of H E Dr Ali bin Amer al Shidhani, Undersecretary for Communications and Information Technology. The camp will train 50 Omanis across two tracks – game programming and animation design – over 24 weeks. Participants will receive both theoretical instruction and hands-on training under the supervision of local and international experts. Jalila bint Abdullah al Fanna al Araimi, Director of the ministry's Future Skills Development Department, said the programme is designed to prepare youth for the global gaming market. 'The initiative aims to empower jobseekers with a talent for game development by offering practical experience within technology incubators and the opportunity to work on original digital projects,' she said. She added that the collaboration with Unity marks the first such partnership in the sultanate. 'Unity's technologies power over 50 percent of digital games worldwide. This partnership will help transfer global expertise to Oman,' she said. The programme is also expected to support the establishment of digital startups in Oman's gaming sector. Sheikh Humaid bin Juma al Shamsi, Member of the Majlis A'Shura and Chairman of the Board of Al Nahda Training Institute, said the gaming industry is evolving into a complex knowledge-based economy. GCC total GDP at constant prices exceeds $456 billion
Muscat: The gross domestic product (GDP) at constant prices for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries rose by 3.3% by the end of the fourth quarter of 2024, reaching $456.3 billion, compared to $442.3 billion during the same period in 2023. The latest statistics released by the GCC Statistical Centre showed that non-oil activities contributed 70.6% to the GCC's GDP at constant prices by the end of the fourth quarter of 2024, while oil activities accounted for 29.4%. The GCC GDP at constant prices recorded a 1% growth in the fourth quarter of 2024, having registered $452.2 billion in the third quarter.
