Indy's $200 million construction season heats up
Indy's 2025 road construction is underway with the promise of improving hundreds of miles of roadway and pedestrian-focused pathways throughout the city.
Why it matters: The work comes as Indianapolis continues to grapple with a pedestrian safety crisis and growing vehicle crash totals.
The big picture: The projects detailed late last week by city officials at Hendricks Park are the next step of Mayor Joe Hogsett's five-year $1 billion capital improvement plan aimed at delivering $859 million in transportation improvements and $180 million in stormwater improvements.
Zoom in: Work on the docket this year includes investing $200 million in transportation and $25 million in stormwater.
It also includes phase one of the three-phase Madison Avenue Road Diet to improve safety on the south side corridor.
Once complete in 2028, the $47 million project will remove two travel lanes, repave more than 16 miles, introduce the 7,200-foot Interurban Trail and add 15,000 linear feet of new curbs and sidewalks between Pleasant Run Parkway and Ray Street.
The work is being funded with three rounds of federal grant dollars through the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization (IMPO).
"This project is about more than just resurfacing a road — it's about reimagining how people move through and experience their neighborhoods," said City-County Councilor Kristin Jones who represents the district and serves as chair of the council's Public Works Committee.
State of play: Other big projects scheduled to take shape this season include the $22.7 million Union Station bridge rehabilitation, $14.6 million in streetscape work along 10th and Rural streets, the $20 million conversion of Michigan and New York streets and $18.7 million in improvements along Girls School Road.
By the numbers: Crews are working on:
♿ 1,300 new or rehabilitated ADA ramps.
🚲 15 miles of new bike lanes.
🌉 17 bridges.
🌳 Planting 1,077 new trees.
🚶 Introducing 163,976 linear feet of trails.
💦 More than 37,000 linear feet of new or rehabbed storm sewers.
What they're saying: "The 2025 construction season is going to be transformational for our city," Hogsett said. "None of these infrastructure improvements would be possible without our dedicated, hardworking team at Indy DPW who will turn more than a quarter of a billion-dollar investment into real, material improvements to our streets."
Zoom out: Indy's construction plans were rolled out just weeks after the Indiana Department of Transportation officially marked the start of its 2025 construction season while recognizing National Work Zone Awareness Week.
According to INDOT commissioner Lyndsay Quist, more than 1,200 projects are planned statewide with nearly 200 of them focused on improved traffic flow and safety.
The host project for INDOT's construction season kickoff was the two-year I-65 Safety and Efficiency project on Indy's southeast side that stretches from north of the I-465 interchange to just south of the I-65/I-70 overpass near Fletcher Avenue.
What we're watching: The forecast. This massive year of road work is all weather dependent, and conditions in Indiana these days are growing both more extreme and more unpredictable.

Alphabet posted strong quarterly results, but the market remains reluctant about the stock amid threats to its search business due to the onslaught of AI tools like ChatGPT. However, Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) bulls believe these concerns are overstated. Google has an edge over competitors because it's easier for the billions of users of its search engine to switch to Gemini instead of opting for a completely new model. Google has over 1.5 billion monthly users interacting with its AI-powered Search overviews. OpenAI, Alphabet's biggest competitor now when it comes to AI search, has less than 5% of its users paying, and its business model is still developing. Google's first-quarter results showed continued strength in its cloud unit, with revenue up 28% year over year and solid operating income growth. This supports Google's broader AI strategy and underscores the scale advantages of its cloud business. RiverPark Large Growth Fund stated the following regarding Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) in its Q1 2025 investor letter: 'Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) shares declined in the first quarter despite solid business fundamentals. Investors reacted negatively to the company's AI product rollout relative to peers, expressing concern about potential market share loss in core search and cloud segments. Nevertheless, Alphabet continues to deliver strong cash flow from its dominant search and YouTube platforms while investing aggressively in its next-generation AI and cloud infrastructure. Google debuts interactive charts in AI Mode to help make you a finance whiz
TL;DR Google has started testing a new AI Mode feature that generates interactive graphs for finance queries. The feature makes it easy to compare and analyze information over time. Interactive graphs in AI Mode are currently available as a Search Labs experiment. Google debuted Search's AI Mode as a Labs experiment to select users earlier this year. At I/O, the company expanded availability to all US users, added Deep Search and Project Astra capabilities to the feature, and previewed some upcoming features, including AI Mode's ability to generate interactive graphics for complex datasets. Google has now started testing this feature for finance-related queries. Google announced the new feature in a recent blog post, highlighting how AI Mode can help users compare and analyze financial information over a specific period with a custom-made interactive graph based on their query. As illustrated in the following clip, when asked to 'compare the stock performance of blue chip CPG companies in 2024,' AI Mode generates a stock price comparison graph and a table that dynamically updates the stock prices when you interact with the graph. Users can also ask follow-up questions to get additional information or refine their queries. Google says the feature uses 'advanced models to understand the intent of the question, tap into real-time and historical information and intelligently determine how to present information to help you make sense of it.' At the moment, the feature only works for finance queries related to stocks and mutual funds. However, Google will expand support for other topics in the future. I'm Already a NotebookLM Fan. This Sharing Feature Just Made It Even Better
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: NotebookLM feels like one of the most practical uses of AI ever. Even better, it doesn't have much of a learning curve for you to wield its power, and you can quickly see how it works for you. And here's a great new addition to its skill set: NotebookLM users can now share their notebooks publicly (or privately) with anyone. So the next time someone asks to see your class notes, you can share your notebook with them and they can generate a study guide on the fly. The Gemini-powered research assistant allows you to add a source like a document, pasted text or even a web page and ask specific questions about the material, and Gemini will only use information from the source itself. That's NotebookLM at its simplest. From there, you can generate briefing docs, timelines, or even full-on podcast-like Audio Overviews based on the topic of your sources. Its power and versatility easily lend themselves to being a go-to tool for school and work. NotebookLM stands out in a sea of AI-powered tools aimed at sourcing answers to questions from all corners of the internet. And while it's not free from direct competition, it remains accessible and free to anyone with a Google account -- and that's a lot of people. The news about the notebook sharing came out Tuesday, just a couple of weeks on from the Google I/O conference, where the company went all in on its latest AI developments, including what we'll be seeing with Android XR and a new way to search. I first heard of this feature coming through Testing Catalog in early May. Google also surfaced the upcoming Video Overviews before they were officially announced last month via a blog post. How to share a notebook on NotebookLM Sharing a notebook in NotebookLM is very similar to sharing a document or file via Google Drive. Google Since this is a Google product, sharing a notebook on NotebookLM is similar to sharing a document via Google Drive. You'll also have a few options for controlling what a viewer has access to. How to share a notebook with restricted access: From the notebook, click the Share button at the top right button at the top right Add the person(s) you want to share it with the person(s) you want to share it with Click Send Now, if you want to make the notebook public, you can click the dropdown in the Notebook access section from Restricted Access to Anyone with link. From there, just copy the link to the notebook and share wherever you want. At the moment, or at least not for me, sharing isn't available for the mobile app. I also tried to share a notebook via the web to see if it would appear in the "shared" tab within the app, but it never popped up. So it looks like an update to the app or a server-side push will be required to see your shared notebooks sync between mobile and web. Additional sharing options Sharing a notebook via NotebookLM gives you a couple of options before you send it to someone. NotebookLM There aren't many options when sharing a notebook, but you do have access to a few tweaks. The first option is a toggle to add a welcome note when sharing a notebook. You can add your own note if you want, otherwise a boilerplate intro will be sent. It's a small addition, but this can be helpful for people who have never heard of or used NotebookLM before. The second option is to restrict the viewer from accessing the full notebook, leaving access to only the chat function. Providing full access to the notebook will not allow someone to edit the content, but it will allow them to generate Audio Overviews, Mind Maps, and other NotebookLM features. Why notebook sharing is a big deal for NotebookLM Maybe you've tried out NotebookLM, but it didn't grab you -- or didn't have the content to feed it to make it work for you. While all it takes is some mild exploration to get a grip on the tool's capabilities, it does take a touch of tinkering. When I was first exploring it, I knew how to use NotebookLM, but I really didn't see its usefulness until I used it in a real-world scenario for work. Only then did I really see how great a tool it is -- and now I use it all the time. Now, people can access public notebooks with multiple sources and get a sense of how the tool works without having to do any of the legwork. Moreover, this also allows someone like a teacher to build a notebook with resources for a class or even a specific test that can be shared with students for studying. In the future, I'd love it if NotebookLM could give viewers the option to submit content for the notebook's owner to consider as a source. This could allow a notebook to become a living document or database where you could, say, identify trends or even something like a customer feedback archive that could easily be searched through. NotebookLM is approachable because it's incredibly simple at its core. Its purpose is to easily surface information when you need it, and adding more complex features won't hinder that mission.
