The College Sports Gold Rush Is About to Run Into a Brick Wall

When Ohio State won college football's national championship in January, it was a victory for perseverance, hard work and offensive ingenuity.
But it was also a triumph of cold, hard cash.

PFT's Mike Florio Starts Rumor Of Cowboys Coach Firing

PFT's Mike Florio Starts Rumor Of Cowboys Coach Firing originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO — The Dallas Cowboys are going to fire new head coach Brian Schottenheimer after this season, insists Fox Sports 1's Colin Cowherd, predicting that "America's Team'' will get "humiliated'' on a weekly basis, leading to owner Jerry Jones making for what would be for him an unprecedented move. Advertisement "Brian Schottenheimer is a one and done," Cowherd proclaimed, adding that he thinks this is his "least surprising prediction.'' "Jerry will know by Thanksgiving he made a huge mistake. Forget the fact that Philadelphia and Washington will probably blow them out in the division twice. 'One and done' happens all the time now. "I think Dallas is going to be humiliated on a lot of Sundays." As we have pointed out before ... Jones, for a variety of reasons and over 36 seasons, has never fired a head coach after one year. Chan Gailey was not an organizational favorite, but he got two years. Dave Campo was an organizational favorite — with two Super Bowl rings — but he lasted three years here while going 5-11 in each of those campaigns. Advertisement There is simply no precedent in Dallas upon which to base this prediction. But now Colin has company. Using reasoning we simply cannot grasp, Mike Florio has placed Schottenheimer on his five-man Coaches Hot Seat for 2025. ... and more, he oddly suggests that Schottenheimer might get dumped by Jerry after one year. Florio writes, "The key to knowing Schottenheimer's job security is to know whether and to what extent he has guaranteed money beyond 2025. ... Schottenheimer came cheaper. How cheap? So cheap that there would be no buyout if he's fired after one year? "If so, Schottenheimer could need to do enough in 2025 to earn his employment for 2026.'' Advertisement We don't get it. Why does Florio think Schottenheimer's contract (however affordable it might be) features no standard buyout guarantees after 2025? Why does Florio think that if Jones judged Schottenheimer's work in 2025 to be so abysmal that is merited dismissal that money would have anything to do with it? And most of all, why does Florio (along with Cowherd) think any of this "Schottenheimer will be fired'' reporting is based on any sort of logic? Buccaneers' Bucky Irving Can Make History in 2025

Buccaneers' Bucky Irving Can Make History in 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and general manager Jason Licht added a huge piece of their re-tooled running game in 2024 in the fourth round of that year's draft. Advertisement Former Minnesota and Oregon running back Mar'Keise "Bucky" Irving was selected by Licht with the No. 125 overall pick and immediately made an impact on the Tampa Bay rushing attack. The Bucs were coming off a league-worst 3.4 yards per carry in 2023, and the addition of then-new offensive coordinator Liam Coen and Irving, Tampa Bay flipped the script in 2024 with a yards-per-carry average of 5.3. The Buccaneers averaged 149.2 yards per game, good enough for fourth in the league. What's more, Irving, who started his rookie season playing behind the veteran Rachaad White, took over the RB1 job about midway through the season, and totaled 1,122 yards on the season. That means with a similar performance in 2025, Irving could become just the third Tampa Bay running back ever to post back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. James Wilder posted 1,544 yards for the Bucs in 1984 while also leading the league with 407 rushing attempts and a Pro Bowl nod, then registered 1,300 the following season. Advertisement Rhett ran for 1,011 yards his rookie season of 1994 while finishing second in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting, then followed that up with 1,207 yards in 1995. Irving became the first Tampa Bay ball carrier to run for 1,000 yards since Doug Martin posted 1,402 in 2015. Now, with another stellar performance in 2025, he can make history.
