A luxury lodge park hidden deep in an ancient royal forest is fast becoming one of the UK's best-kept getaway secrets.
Rockingham Forest Park, tucked away in the historic woodlands near King's Cliffe, sits on what was once a World War Two airfield – but these days it's all hot tubs, hammocks and heavenly views.
The site opened in April 2021 with 50 plush cabins – and it's proved to be a hit with families, couples and nature lovers alike.
Set on former royal deer hunting grounds, the woodland retreat is packed with wildlife including deer, red kites and even rare butterflies.
THE EXPANSION
Rockingham Forest Park in North Northamptonshire has been granted permission to build 64 more luxury lodges along with a brand-new leisure hub, as part of a huge expansion.
Bosses say demand for the woodland retreat has boomed since launch – with bookings soaring as holidaymakers swap beach breaks for cosy countryside escapes.
The new phase will include lodges ranging from two to five bedrooms, plus a gym, swimming pool, spa, restaurant and bar, and a whopping 156 extra parking spaces to cater for more guests.
THE OBJECTIONS
The park's expansion hasn't come without controversy – with earlier plans for 80 extra lodges slammed over fears they'd wreck the local wildlife and clog up roads.
North Northamptonshire Council's planning authority initially raised concerns about flooding, environmental damage and traffic, with one resident branding the site a "notorious accident blackspot."
But despite the objections, the local highways authority gave the thumbs up – and the revised proposal for 64 new lodges finally got the green light.
Holiday Park in UK village that looks like Greece
Anglian Water also objected, warning of pollution risks and capacity issues, but said the project could go ahead if a proper waste strategy is put in place.
Speaking on behalf of the developer, Becky Brown insisted the park is being built with nature in mind, saying: 'Phase one of the park was designed and has been built out with environmental stewardship at its core.'
She added the expansion will create 31 full-time and multiple part-time jobs and boost the local economy – all while respecting the area's sensitive surroundings.
THE REVIEWS
Guests are going wild for the scenic surroundings, swish kitchens and welcome packs filled with local treats.
One holidaymaker even spotted a stag strolling past their lodge.
The peaceful setting gets top marks from guests, with plenty of praise for the friendly staff, stocked kitchens and the bistro – where you can even order a pizza to your pod.
And it's not just the park that's worth a visit – nearby hotspots like Burghley House, Stamford and the stunning Fineshade Wood nature reserve offer perfect day trip options.
Throw in forest trails, off-road adventures, a microbrewery and local farms, and you've got all the ingredients for a proper countryside escape.

153 km long Scottish hike with dramatic views crowned best in UK

It runs from Milngavie to Fort William One of Scotland's most iconic walking routes has been named the best multi-day hike in the UK, according to a new analysis by Blacks outdoor retailer. ‌ The West Highland Way topped the rankings with a score of 9.24 out of 10, based on a combination of Google search interest and average user ratings. The 153.5 km trail runs from Milngavie, just outside Glasgow, to Fort William, taking in some of the country's most dramatic and diverse scenery along the way. ‌ The route typically takes between five and seven days to complete and offers walkers views of Loch Lomond, Rannoch Moor, Glen Nevis and The Trossachs National Park, with Ben Nevis looming near the finish. It has an average user rating of 4.5 out of 5, with reviewers praising its well-maintained paths and breathtaking landscapes. ‌ The trail begins in lowland farmland beneath the Campsie Fells, moving past the serene shores of Loch Lomond before heading into rugged Highland terrain. It then crosses the remote wilderness of Rannoch Moor, skirts the edge of Glencoe and continues past Loch Leven, finally reaching Fort William via Glen Nevis. For those wanting to extend their walk, the trail links up with the Great Glen Way or the unofficial East Highland Way. ‌ Although the West Highland Way is well marked and avoids any major mountain climbs, it still provides a rewarding challenge. One of the most demanding sections is the walk up the eastern shore of Loch Lomond, while other parts of the route can be exposed to the elements. A breakdown of the The West Highland Way: ‌ Milngavie to Drymen: 19km, 5–6 hours Drymen to Rowardennan: 24km, 6–7 hours Rowardennan to Inverarnan: 22km, 6–7 hours Inverarnan to Tyndrum: 19.5km, 5–6 hours Tyndrum to Inveroran: 14.5km, 4–5 hours Inveroran to Kings House: 16km, 4–5 hours Kings House to Kinlochleven: 14.5km, 4–5 hours Kinlochleven to Fort William: 24km, 6–7 hours Following closely behind in second place is Monarch's Way, which scored 8.48. This historic English trail traces the escape route of King Charles II after the Battle of Worcester in 1651. Stretching over 600 miles, it is the country's longest inland waymarked trail and can take up to 60 days to complete. ‌ Scotland's Great Glen Way ranked fourth with a score of 8.10. Suitable for walkers of all levels, the route stretches from Fort William to Inverness and takes four to seven days to complete. While mostly following canal paths and forest tracks, the trail also offers options for more experienced hikers to tackle nearby Munros and Corbetts. ‌ The Rob Roy Way came in at number ten with a rating of 5.24. Spanning 79 miles between Drymen and Pitlochry, the trail follows in the footsteps of legendary Scottish outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor and passes through a mix of forest, lochs, aqueducts and ancient landmarks, including a 3600-year-old stone circle. "With such a diverse range of landscapes across the UK, there is a perfect long-distance walk for all types of hikers, the best of which you can find in our list.' He added: 'Before setting out on a multi-day hike, preparation is crucial to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Take some time to thoroughly research the trail length and terrain to know what equipment will be best suited. ‌ "Walking poles can provide extra stability and reduce the strain on your joints, which is especially important for any steeper ascents or descents.' The abandoned miniature railway that was once a much-loved family attraction, reopens to the public

AN abandoned miniature railway has reopened to the public for the first time in seven years. With the kids now off school for six weeks, it can be tricky to think of an endless list of activities to keep them entertained. 5 5 5 Many holiday camps and kids clubs can be extremely expensive, so for any parents looking for a budget day out the Basildon Miniature Railway at Wat Tyler Country Park offers a perfect solution. The beloved attraction finally opened its doors again last weekend, after months of renovation. First opened way back in 1988, the miniature train fell into disrepair in the 21st century and became overgrown with bushes and weeds. It closed down in 2019, but thanks to the help of locals and train enthusiasts, the quaint attraction is now back up and running, with visitors able to ride the train around the large country park, for just £4. A spokesperson for Basildon Miniature Railway said: "After a successful weekend of providing trips with members of the public riding the train for the first time in 7 years, we are pleased to announce we are open for business. "Thank you to a great team of volunteers, Hastings Miniature Railway, and Ropley Miniature Railway for helping to make this happen." Dan Radcliffe, a member of the Hastings Miniature Railway group, added: "Over the past year, we have been working with Basildon Miniature Railway to help bring this much-loved railway back into operation after seven years of closure. "The new operator and his team have worked tirelessly repairing the rails, stations, and crossing points, clearing back years of foliage, etc, and yesterday was finally the day that showed all of this hard work had been worth it." "We at Hastings have assisted along the way, giving advice, building the new road crossing, and supplying new coaches and our own Cornish pixie. "Ropley miniature railway has recently been assisted by lending them another familiar locomotive - RVM built Hasty. English seaside town to transform abandoned beach shelters into new attraction "This has been a fantastic project to have been involved in, and we take our hats off to Dan and his team at Basildon in bringing back to life a railway that had been feared may never reopen." The tiny railway track was originally just 1200 yards long and in 2012 was extended towards the park's northern entrance, making the new track one kilometre long. It takes roughly 20 minutes to take a trip on the miniature railway, which is one of the longest in Essex. The train is open on weekends, and during school holidays, from April until the end of September. THE summer holidays are here, but entertaining the kids need not cost a fortune. Options include sandwiches, a cooked breakfast and fish and chips. All kids' meals come with a piece of fruit and a drink. Daniel Harrison, who volunteered with the railway back in the 1980s, was given a contract to renovate it, after the previous owner's death. 'I used to go down there with my parents on Sunday day trips", he said. "We got talking to the owner and I volunteered my time. "I was quite young at the time, about 12.' Despite the success of the renovation, Daniel admitted that it hasn't all been plain sailing. "The biggest challenge has been the railroad crossing; if you take any railway regardless of gauge across a road it's fraught with difficulties like complying with certain standards, being safe to operate, and it was a particular challenge." 5 5
