India Navy's latest stealth frigate INS Tamal visits Italy

New Delhi: INS Tamal, the latest stealth frigate of the Indian Navy, has arrived in Italy, during her return passage to India after the commissioning in Russia on July 1, officials said on Friday. INS Tamal participated in a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with ITS Trieste, a landing platform dock of the Italian Navy, prior to entering harbour in Naples, they said.
The stealth frigate arrived in Naples on August 13, during her return passage to India after the commissioning in Russia, the defence ministry said. "The visit underscores the deepening of bilateral relations between India and Italy since the elevation to a 'Strategic Partnership' in 2023, centered on expanded cooperation in defence, energy, and technology, and is aimed at enhancing interoperability and jointmanship between both the navies," it said in a statement. Joint operations during the PASSEX included communication exercises, manoeuvres and flying operations, a Navy spokesperson said.
The ship's engagements during the port call include professional and bilateral activities, including interaction with civil dignitaries in Naples, cross-deck visits, discussions with senior Italian Navy functionaries and cultural events in honour of Indo-Italian relations, it said. INS Tamal celebrated India's 79th Independence Day in Naples on August 15.
The port call by INS Tamal is "indicative of the importance India attaches to its relations with Italy and the endeavour to strengthen the growing defence cooperation between the two nations".

The Commanding Officer called on Vice Admiral Pierpaolo Budri, Chief of Staff of the Logistics Command of the Italian Navy and Ms Laura Lieto, Deputy Mayor of Naples," said the Navy.

INS Rana, INS Jyoti arrive in Colombo for SLINEX-25
VISAKHAPATNAM: Indian Naval Ships INS Rana (guided-missile destroyer) and INS Jyoti (fleet tanker) have arrived in Colombo for the 12th edition of the Sri Lanka-India Naval Exercise (SLINEX-25). Launched in 2005, SLINEX is held regularly to enhance interoperability, strengthen maritime ties, and share best practices. The previous edition was hosted in Visakhapatnam in December 2024. The Harbour Phase, August 14–16, featured professional interactions, cultural exchanges, yoga sessions, and sporting events to foster camaraderie between the two navies. The Sea Phase, August 17–18, will include gunnery firing, navigation drills, fuelling at sea, and Visit Board Search and Seizure (VBSS) operations. Sri Lankan Navy ships SLNS Gajabahu and SLNS Vijayabahu will participate, along with Special Forces from both sides. The officials said the exercise reflects strong bilateral maritime engagement and aligns with India's MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) policy.

Visakhapatnam: Indian Naval Ships INS Rana, a guided missile destroyer, and INS Jyoti, a fleet tanker, arrived in Colombo to take part in the 12th edition of Sri Lanka India Naval Exercise (SLINEX-25) scheduled till August 18. The SLINEX maritime exercise exemplifies the deep engagement between India and Sri Lanka, which has strengthened cooperation in the maritime domain in consonance with India's policy of Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth across Regions (MAHASAGAR). The exercise is conducted in two phases – the harbour phase in Colombo from August 14 to 16 Aug, followed by the sea phase slated from August 17 to 18. Conceptualised in 2005, 'SLINEX', a bilateral naval exercise has strengthened maritime cooperation between the two nations over two decades. SLINEX aims at enhancing interoperability, maritime cooperation and exchanging best practices while jointly undertaking multi-faceted maritime operations. The previous edition of the SLINEX was conducted in Visakhapatnam last December. SLNS Gajabahu and Vijayabahu (both advanced offshore patrol vessels) will be representing the Sri Lankan Navy, while Special Forces of both the navies will also be featured in the bilateral exercise. During the harbour phase, professional interactions, subject matter expert exchange (SMEE), sharing of best practices, cultural and social exchanges along with yoga sessions and sporting events are included. They aim to further bolster the bonds of friendship and camaraderie between both the navies. Gunnery firing serials, communication protocols, navigation, seamanship evolutions, visit board search and seizure (VBSS) and fuelling at sea form a part of the naval drills during the sea phase.
