Although it still requires approval from the NBA Board of Governors, the recent $6.1 billion sale agreement of the Boston Celtics is paving the way for another potentially lucrative opportunity for the NBA: expansion.
The league, which currently has 30 franchises, continues to study models for expansion, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said Thursday during a news conference at the conclusion of meetings with league owners. Silver acknowledged that there were 'no new developments' and no formal timeline to announce, but he did make clear that the league continues to be 'very focused' on one particular city, and one that formerly was home to the SuperSonics.
'I would just say the fact that we're not ready to make any public announcements with a specific timeline doesn't mean we don't care a lot about those fans and we aren't focused on the potential for the NBA to return to Seattle,' Silver said Thursday.
It was 17 years ago that the former SuperSonics team relocated to Oklahoma City and rebranded itself as the Thunder. Originally founded in 1967, the SuperSonics played 40 seasons in Seattle before the relocation.
Yet, that is just one market the NBA is considering, with Silver saying the league was assessing fair value to new and existing owners, as media rights deals would need to be split with any new ownership groups in the league's revenue sharing model.
Silver said the NBA has been looking at expansion models 'over the last year or so' and pointed to the Celtics sale as a potential catalyst toward adding a 31st and 32nd franchise.
'There's no doubt that a major transaction like that becomes relevant to expansion,' Silver said.
One of the complications to expansion is the uncertainty of regional sports networks that carry local broadcasts of games. Unlike the NFL, which airs most of its games on national networks like CBS, FOX and NBC and major streaming partners like Amazon and Netflix, the NBA relies on regional sports networks to carry non-national broadcasts. With cord cutting and cable subscriptions on the decline, many of these networks have faced financial difficulties.
'I'd just add the last component, which also is giving me just a bit of pause, is that we'd like to have a better sense of where we're going with local media,' Silver said. 'It's well known that we've seen some significant declines there. Virtually two-thirds of our teams are now dealing with RSNs that recently experienced bankruptcies or have shut down.
'I think while we understand the national media landscape now, to the extent we're looking at expansion domestically, I think we'd really like to understand what that opportunity for local media is, because it's a pretty critical component of our teams' economics.'

The Golden State Warriors have had over 600 players don the more than 60 jersey numbers used by their players over the more than 75 years of existence the team has enjoyed in its rich and storied history. After ending his college career at American International College, Elie was picked up with the 160th overall selection (there were many more rounds in that era of the draft) of the 1985 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. Cut by the team, the New Yorker played in other domestic and foreign leagues until he signed with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1990. He would then sign with the Dubs in 1991, and played for the team until he signed with the Portland Trail Blazers in 1992. He explained why he believes that in a recent article. "By the 2027-28 campaign, all that's left on the books will be the final year of Moses Moody's contract and a player option for Buddy Hield. This club could completely bottom out, and the chance of that happening locks this pick onto the list," Buckley wrote. That is a very interesting take, but one that makes a ton of sense. Teams could have high interest in that pick and be willing to part ways with one of their current win-now players in order to acquire it. Last season, the Warriors made the playoffs as the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference. They pulled off an upset over the No. 2-seeded Houston Rockets in the first round. Unfortunately, their season came to an end in the second round against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Curry went down with a hamstring injury in Game 1. Golden State took that game, but lost the next four without its superstar point guard on the court. Jonathan Kuminga may or may not be back and there are some talented pieces throughout the roster. Perhaps Golden State could consider pursuing a big trade using that valuable 2028 first-round pick. Steelers' Beanie Bishop Throws Shade at Jets
UNITY TWP, Pa. — Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Beanie Bishop threw shade at the New York Jets when asked why he and Brandin Echols bring so much energy to practice. 'Obviously him coming from the Jets, winning isn't something they do a lot of and things like that. It's just something you want to do is go out and celebrate with your teammates,' Bishop said. Bishop certainly didn't hold back. However, it is true that the Jets have not won a lot in recent years, as they're coming off 5-12, 7-10 and 7-10 seasons. Nevertheless, putting it out in the media could provide some extra motivation for the Jets, who are the Steelers' Week 1 opponent. Bishop had two interceptions off Aaron Rodgers in last year's Steelers-Jets meeting, a 37-15 victory for Pittsburgh. Of course, Rodgers is now in the Black and Gold. The Week 1 showdown between the Steelers and Jets has a slew of headlines. Rodgers returns to MetLife Stadium after a nasty breakup with the Jets organization. Jets QB Justin Fields will also be out for revenge on the Steelers. Rodgers is not afraid to speak his mind, especially when someone crosses him. That was the case with the Jets this offseason when they released the four-time NFL MVP. How the Jets handled the whole situation did not sit well with Rodgers. 'That's the way it goes sometimes,' Rodgers told Kyle Brandt of NFL Network when asked about the Steelers facing the Jets in Week 1. 'Did they have any inside information? I don't know. Who were they talking to? I don't know. But, start off with the Jets, then play Seattle, where DK (Metcalf) just came from… But I'm excited. Get to play the Jets, play the Packers, play the Bears, play the Vikings. It'll be fun.' According to former NFL offensive lineman Mark Schlereth, who is a close friend of Rodgers, the future Hall of Fame quarterback went on a long-winded rant about how dysfunctional the Jets' organization was during his two-year tenure. 'Aaron and I had a conversation about when he was with the Jets was how abysmal their running game was and how schematically it made no sense,' Schlereth said on The Stinkin Truth Podcast in June. 'I started the conversation, and then Aaron went on for about a 25-minute diatribe on just their run game.' During an interview with Pat McAfee in April, Rodgers recounted flying to New York to meet with Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, and that meeting going very poorly. 'I think we're gonna have this long conversation,' Rodgers said. 'I've flown across the country. Twenty seconds in … I'm talking to the GM about something and [Glenn] leans to the edge of his seat and goes, 'So, do you want to play football?' 'And I was like, 'Yeah, I'm interested.' 'Then he says, 'We're going in a different direction at quarterback.'' Glenn is not worried about the media attention heading into the Week 1 game against the Steelers at MetLife Stadium. 'This is the NFL. And, to me, every game there's a lot of noise because they're so critical — as far as wins and losses,' he said. 'We want to try and accumulate as many wins as we can, and I don't care who that opponent is.' Rodgers would love nothing more than to get back at his former team.
