England team received 3,000 ‘hostile or concerning' posts during Euro 2025 final, report finds
Moonshoot, a UK-based threat monitoring service, analysed threats of violence and abuse targeting England's players and head coach Sarina Wiegman during the victory over Spain, and found social media platforms have failed to take down the majority of abuse targeted at the Lionesses.

The company assessed 73,400 posts during the final across 30 social media platforms. They found that 3,000 contained 'hostile or concerning content' such as non-targeted abusive language or misogyny.
Moonshot reported 95 posts which specifically targeted a player or the head coach to the platforms, as they were classified as abuse and clear violations of the platforms' terms of service. However, 99 per cent of those posts remain online.
'Moderation is reducing,' Catriona Scholes, director of insight at Moonshot, told The Athletic. 'There are fewer moderators being recruited and retained by the platforms to take this kind of content down. I think that the experience of the players is a reflection of that reality.
'We are seeing the Online Safety Act in the UK showing a real intention to crack down on that. But what we aren't seeing is an associated significant reduction in that content online.'
Those 95 posts included racist abuse (42 per cent of posts), misogynistic sentiment (29 per cent), sexual objectification (12 per cent), and anti-LGBTQ+ abuse (11 per cent).
Michelle Agyemang was the most targeted player in the dataset. Agyemang, the most junior member of Wiegman's squad at 19 years old, was voted young player of the tournament and scored two late equalisers that were crucial in England's progress to the final.
The Arsenal forward only came on in the 71st minute in the final but was the target of 18 per cent of abusive posts during the game, which were primarily of a racist nature.
Before the semi-finals, England defender Jess Carter stepped back from social media after receiving racist abuse during the tournament. Following her statement, the team decided to stop taking the knee before their matches.
'It is clear we and football need to find another way to tackle racism,' the Lionesses squad said in a statement. 'Those behind this online poison must be held accountable.'
'It feels like there can be a place where we can control abuse online, especially racism online, because everything's monitored online,' England defender Lucy Bronze said in a news conference, 'so it just doesn't make sense to us.'
According to Moonshot, moderation standards are declining across social media platforms. Last year, it recorded a 28 per cent take-down rate for all posts which violate the platforms' terms of service or community guidelines on X, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, and Facebook. By July 2025, this take-down rate declined to 6 per cent.

'The social media companies can improve their proactive identification capabilities so that more content is identified through automated means and then goes through assessments by moderators,' Scholes added. 'They can also do more to actually apply their own terms of service as they're written.
'It's not even that they need to change the policies … it's actually that they need to put in the enforcement and implementation steps.
'We're seeing a decline (in moderation), so we can also say that they were better than they are now. So that's probably a reflection of there being less focus on moderation in the large tech companies right now.'
Scholes explains that there are more sophisticated threats which are 'challenging' for moderators, such as using AI-generated content that promotes disinformation about a player and sparks abuse, or using emojis, misspelling and coded language to disguise abuse.
The company says the volume of abuse and threats during the final was lower than expected, which it believes is due to England's victory. However, the report says the figures demonstrate 'a systemic failure in platform moderation, where even the most explicit violations of stated community guidelines remain visible and accessible'.
The report added that the failure in platform moderation was 'particularly stark in the context of the UK Online Safety Act which designates much of this content as 'priority illegal content'.'
After Carter's statement, anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out said: 'Social media companies have failed to prevent exposure to this toxicity, and football must continue to use its collective power to hold them to account. We have been working with the government and the regulator, but we know that more urgency is needed from everyone involved.'

Nassourdine Imavov explains declining UFC 319 backup: Caio Borralho 'taking my leftovers'
Nassourdine Imavov confirms he declined the UFC 319 title fight backup slot, but says it was for quality reasons. With his UFC Fight Night 258 main event on the horizon, Imavov (16-4 MMA, 8-2 UFC) doesn't see much reward in traveling across the world, battling jet lag and cutting weight, only to likely not even fight in the end. He initially agreed to fill the role when it seemed the impending title fight between Dricus Du Plessis and Khamzat Chimaev would happen in late Spring or early Summer. But after the timeline pushed, Imavov declined. Even the Sept. 2 showdown vs. Caio Borralho in Paris, he views as a bit of a placeholder, though a necessary one. "I was like, 'OK, if the title fight is in August and I have to be the backup, then I don't want to train for nothing. I don't want to train for nothing,'" Imavov told MMA Junkie on Tuesday through a French-language interpreter. "... So I was like, 'Maybe it's better to focus on Caio Borralho.' The UFC asked us a few weeks ago for me to come in the U.S. for the weigh-ins and everything. I said no because I have a fight that's scheduled three weeks later. So I don't have time to travel and have jet lag. I want to be in the best condition for my fight. That's why I said, 'No, I won't come. Maybe they'll put Caio at this place.' But right now, I'm only focusing on Caio in Paris. Bring him." Borralho (17-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC) instead will weigh in Aug. 15 in Chicago. He proudly revealed the backup fighter designation himself on social media. To Imavov, the designation is no accolade, however. "For me, it's his problem," Imavov said. "He agreed to that because he was honored to be the backup, but he's just taking my leftovers because I declined. Otherwise, if I hadn't declined, the UFC wouldn't call him to be the backup. He has to understand this. In my mind, I hope he won't use it as excuses or dodge the fight. I will be ready Sept. 6 and he has to be ready. Because he has spoken a lot. No excuses. "Even for me, being the backup for a title shot it's not an honor for me. Because when I want to fight for the title, I want to have my face on the poster. Because what's he going to do? He's going to make weight and be in another (city) there in Chicago. No one will speak about him. He doesn't have any road at the end of the day and everyone will forget after the fight happens because Khamzat and DDP and everyone will forget Caio was the backup. It's something that doesn't have any sense. No one is speaking about the backup fighter." Title eliminator – no question, affirms Imavov Imavov says without question, if he gets through Borralho, he'll be the next UFC middleweight title challenger. He says the UFC has told him as much. A win would make it five victories in a row over top-10 opponents since February 2024. Other victories in the stretch include Roman Dolidze, Jared Cannonier, Brendan Allen, and Israel Adesanya. "It's very simple: I'm a complete fighter," Imavov said. "I consider myself as a complete fighter. So if it has to go to the ground, it'll go to the ground. I will welcome him to the ground. If it stays standing, it will be (better) and I will just demolish him. The thing is that I don't speak too much but when I fight, I want to bring a real show to my fans." "... He just wants to win the fight in this way, having a weird fight, a not interesting fight. That's not how I'm used to doing. For me, I'll make this fight in spectacular fashion. It's important for me to show people that I can make a boring fighter, a great fight." Swanage's Nash and Lewis impress with partnership in defeat to Hamworthy
ON SATURDAY, the Swanage 2ndXI travelled to Hamworthy for their latest Division 4 encounter. After losing the toss and being put into bat, the visitor's opening-pair of Mike Nash & John Lewis were determined to 'lay' a sound foundation to enable the middle-order to flourish later in the innings. They were able to do this by mixing solid defence with some ferocious drives and pull-shots - together they constructed a brilliant 120-run partnership, until in the 22nd over, Lewis was caught in the outfield attempting his ninth boundary for an excellent 48. Despite losing another wicket straight away, the momentum of the innings was maintained when the in-form Sid Nash joined Mike and they both continued to bat in a positive fashion. Mike was finally dismissed trying to hit his second maximum (to go along with his other 10 boundaries) for 77. Despite the fact wickets continued to fall, Sid batted very belligerently and, fittingly brought up his second consecutive half-century, with a 'towering' six into the pavilion. He was eventually dismissed off the final ball of the innings going for his 11th boundary for 66 off just 55 balls, but had enabled the visitors to reach the respectable total of 236-6 from their 40 overs. The hosts got-off to truly remarkable start, with their 'star' batsman reaching a half-century in just the 5th over. He continued to bat in this very aggressive manner reaching a quite simply astonishing century in only the 15th over. He was finally dismissed for a staggering 141 off just 74 balls - his remarkable innings included 26 boundaries and allowed the hosts to complete a convincing nine-wicket victory in just the 27th over. Despite this defeat, the visitors remain in third place in an incredibly competitive division and are still within touching distance of the top two. Also on Saturday, the 3rdXI continued their 'fight' against relegation in Division 5 when they hosted Wimborne 4thXI on the Nursery ground at Days Park. The visited batted first and, although Paul Knight - claimed 4 wickets and Tim Ives & Sam Willcocks claimed 3 and 2 wickets respectively the visitors managed to reach 237 before they were bowled-out. In reply, the hosts lost wickets at regular intervals and, although, David Alcock made 38 were in the very precarious position of 110-7 when he was dismissed. This brought together Geoff Willcocks & Matt. Dunster - who changed the complexion of the game completely with an unbelievable 108-run partnership in only 16 overs. Willcocks struck 11 boundaries (and lost 3 balls in the process) as he 'smashed' 67 off just 52 balls. He was ably supported by Dunster - who made an enterprising 31. However, there was still more nail-biting drama to come because as they were both removed in the same over to leave the hosts 219-9. As the game entered the last over - the hosts still needed 14 runs, they were indebted to Knight who struck two of the last four balls of the match to the boundary to secure a remarkable win for Dunster's side (to move them out of the relegation places). As well as that, the 1stXI played host to Martinstown in Premier Division 2. The hosts batted first and despite another half-century by the in-form Tom Wells (59) and some resistance from the lower-order of Nick Pestana, Freddie Long & Steve Ramsay, the hosts never recovered from 131-6 and were 'shot-out' for just 185. In reply, the visitors had few-alarms in reaching their target and, although Matt. Beard took two wickets in an-over - they completed a comfortable four-wicket victory. This defeat still leaves the hosts in a secure mid-table position.
