KABUL, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Afghan counter-narcotics forces have launched more than 98,000 operations nationwide in the past nearly four years, dismantling over 20,000 drug processing labs, according to the Ministry of Interior on Thursday.
Speaking at a gathering in Kabul to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Abdul Mateen Qani, spokesman for the ministry, said that over 98,000 operations have been conducted across the country during the cited period, leading to the destruction of over 20,000 clandestine drug processing labs and the arrest of more than 28,000 drug traffickers.
In a major crackdown on illicit crop cultivation, security forces have destroyed over 38,000 hectares of land used for growing poppy and hashish across the country during the period, Qani said.
The Afghan interim government banned poppy cultivation and its processing and drug trafficking in April 2022, and has vowed to eliminate drug menace in the country.

Lithuanian lawmakers pass amended real estate tax reform

VILNIUS, June 26 (Xinhua) -- The Lithuanian parliament on Thursday adopted amendments to the Law on Real Estate Tax, the most hotly debated part of the current tax reform, after the ruling coalition modified both the original government proposal and its later revision in response to criticism from the public and some politicians. The bill passed with 77 votes in favor, 46 against and four abstentions. Lithuania had pledged to broaden the real estate tax base as part of its commitments to the European Commission and failure to do so could cost the country significant funding, according to the Baltic News Service (BNS). The amendments set the threshold for taxing a primary residence at 450,000 euros (526,440 U.S. dollars) per person or 900,000 euros for co-owners. Secondary and subsequent residential properties will be taxed starting at a value of 50,000 euros. Municipalities will set tax rates ranging from 0.1 percent to 1 percent on primary residences. Indonesia thwarts human trafficking attempt

JAKARTA, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's security authorities have thwarted an attempt to smuggle 98 Indonesian citizens to several destinations, including countries currently embroiled in conflict and known as hubs for global scamming operations. Working in coordination with immigration officials, the National Police launched patrols earlier this month at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Banten province. Their efforts successfully prevented 98 individuals, believed to be victims of human trafficking, from being sent abroad. "This prevention effort is carried out to ensure Indonesian citizens do not fall victim to conflicts, such as those currently unfolding in the Middle East," said Amingga Primastito, an officer from the National Police's Criminal Investigation Department, in a statement on Thursday. Primastito said that many of the victims had been recruited by people they knew personally, including neighbors or relatives, forming a covert and informal recruitment network. The victims will undergo a formal assessment process aimed at identifying the broader recruitment network. Following this, they will be handed over to the Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency for counseling and education on safe migration practices.
