‘That's disgusting': Bali beach photo horrifies travellers
Posted in the Bali Bogans Facebook page, a user named Kirsty Grist shared pictures of rubbish, including syringes, washed up on Legian and Kuta beaches.
'Hey everyone, if you are in this area, especially with little ones, please be careful. There is a heap of medical waste washed up on the beach. We have picked up 2 bags worth of syringes … some with needle ends, some without,' she said.
The post was immediately swamped with comments, with some claiming the syringes were simply for shots at local bars, while others didn't believe it had happened at all.
One person posted: 'Yuck. That's disgusting.'
Another anonymous user commented: 'We stayed at Nusa Dua last month, nice resort, but they need to clean up beach …'
Another traveller named Liana Haylen commented: 'Yeah it was here on beach in Seminyak last night too. Some are alcohol shots (usually larger ones) but some are the real deal. Be careful folks.'
Jade Sullivan replied: 'We picked a big one up off the beach the other week at Bloo Lagoon, the needle was huge.'
However, one commenter argued it was 'bulls**t' and that they were simply shots.
One wrote: 'Never seen it, been going to Kuta and Legian for 40 years. Absolute bulls**t.
'Don't put a picture up show me live footage of you finding it. Bet you can't and won't.'
Another user named Cassie Hardy responded: 'This is true, we picked up 2 bags worth. Some with exposed needles.'
The original poster also responded saying: 'That's nice. I've been coming here for 9+ years and also haven't seen anything like it. God forbid I try to give holiday goers a heads up. I'll meet you down Legian beach tomorrow and show you exactly where I found them.'
An anonymous user responded claiming they had visited the same spot and it was clean.
While there are differing accounts of the latest issue, it further exposes one of the ugly realities of the Aussie tourism hotspot.
Plastic waste washing up is not an irregular issue, but it usually happens during the wet season of October to March.
Bali.com reports that Indonesia is second in the world only to China in terms of its contribution to marine plastic pollution due to poor plastic waste management.
Kuta and Legian beaches get up to 60 tonnes of plastic trash each year.
In December 2024, a horrific video from environmental activist Gary Bencheghib, showed the devastating reality of plastic pollution on Kendonganan beach.
It required days of clean up as a relentless tidal wave of plastic waste in the oceans washed up on the beaches.
But during the wet season, the rubbish will be relentless across the likes of Kuta, Seminyak, Legian and Jimbaran beaches.
It's an annual phenomenon that sees plastic, garbage, and waste from shipping vessels often carried into land by strong winds, high tides, and driving rains.
The island's open landfills are also a huge problem. As they become fuller, they put pressure on local waste management operations.
Rubbish is then spilt into waterways and dumped in unofficial landfill sites, often on the edges of some of Bali's most beautiful natural landscapes.
Officials have implemented solutions, and while some have had an impact, more needs to be done.
Before the pandemic, Bali welcomed 6.2 million international tourists a year and an estimated 10 million domestic tourists.
It has long placed a significant burden on Bali's waste management systems, producing an estimated 1.6 million tonnes of waste.

The postie signed for a parcel for me - then the unthinkable happened
Don't miss out on the headlines from Lifestyle. Followed categories will be added to My News. A woman has taken to Reddit to share her Australia Post horror story, after what should have been a simple delivery quickly turned into something more sinister. The woman said that she'd ordered a package full of goodies for her new puppy. But, after what happened next, she was wishing it had just ended up at the post office. Want to join the family? Sign up to our Kidspot newsletter for more stories like this. RELATED: Aussies divided over StarTrack delivery effort 'It was 'delivered' whilst we were away' An Aussie woman has taken to Reddit after a shocking experience with Australia Post. 'I bought some puppy stuff from a small business in QLD that has lovely leashes and harnesses. We're super excited about our little furry friend coming that I may have gone a bit overboard and purchased a few different sized harnesses for her to grow into in a gorgeous pattern,' she wrote. 'We ended up having to go to Bendigo for a long weekend to visit my terminally ill grandmother, but the text from Aus Post said that if no one was home, it'll be taken to the local post office. 'All good, except it was 'delivered' whilst we were away.' When the woman came home to no parcel, she went to the post office to see what had happened. Ultimately, she discovered that the delivery man had signed for her parcel on her behalf and 'dumped it' at her door - then it was stolen. RELATED: Amazon under fire over suspected scam 'It seemed so inappropriate' While you might expect that to be the worst of it, the woman said what happened next far surpassed it. As per the recommendation of a staff member at the post office, she decided to lodge a complaint online. However, two days later, she got a knock at her door. 'That delivery man came to my door whilst I was home and asked me why I'd submitted a complaint,' she wrote in her post. 'I told him he'd fraudulently signed on my behalf and his actions had led to my parcel being stolen. He tried looking into my house to probably see if I'd stashed it somewhere. I also asked him why he thought it was appropriate to come to my house and harass me about this and he said his boss told him to. 'I was fuming, it seemed so inappropriate and I'd been afraid something like this would happen if I complained.' What happens next? The woman said Australia Post has since admitted to fault, and she's been able to get some support from the original business - Pablo and Co - in sending her a new order. However, in her eyes, that hasn't been good enough. 'Even with the email where they say they're in the wrong, they've refused to reimburse the shop,' she said. In an update to Reddit, she shared that the new order made it to her - unfortunately with the same delivery man - and she's filed a second complaint with Australia Post. In a statement to Kidspot, Australia Post confirmed that they are looking into the issue. 'Australia Post takes customer concerns of this nature very seriously,' a spokesperson said. 'We are currently investigating this matter with the local delivery team and will update the customer in coming days.' Wrecking crew and 70 pigeons crush slumlord's derelict home
He fought council over unpaid rates for decades but in the end it was a wrecking crew and as many as 70 pigeons that crushed the derelict home of an infamous Aussie slumlord. Decades of decay reduced to rubble in six hours when a wrecking crew tore through stubborn property millionaire Edward 'Ted' Amos' crumbling Ascot house, the stench of which had apparently become unbearable after as many as 70 pigeons trashed it. MORE: Explosive new crackdown on rich tax breaks Broke to $100m: 34yo now has 158 Aus homes RELATED: Inside slumlord's crumbling $10m empire Mr Amos had been facing ongoing Brisbane City Council action over as many as eight properties spread across some of the city's most expensive inner city suburbs – the worst of which was the Lancaster Road home which was not just derelict and unliveable, but stinking so bad that neighbours couldn't bear to open windows any more. The wrecking crew took just six hours to tear the crumbling two bedroom house in Ascot's Lancaster Road to the ground, with their biggest challenge being how to prevent it from collapsing into the house next door. 'It was pretty bad. There were pigeons all through it and the stench of it was incredible.' 'The neighbours couldn't even open the window because of the stench.' Part of the house which was prone to collapsing dangerously had to be taken down by hand to reduce the danger. It is understood council approved the demolition, though no publicly accessible record could be found on the BCC development site. MORE: Cash-strap student turns $40k to 38 homes Govt pays $3.3m for unliveable derelict house Other neighbours were relieved to finally see something happen on the site which has been 'a pigeon palace' for literally decades that it's been abandoned. 'It's good, we've been complaining for a long time. There were about 60 or 70 pigeons living in the house. They'll have to find somewhere else to roost now.' The median house price in Ascot is $2.525m, located within 6km of the Brisbane CBD. Prices in the suburb have jumped 83 per cent in the past five years. A four-bedroom house built in the backyard of his immediate neighbour sold for $1.13m in 2020 and is currently valued as high as $2.03m. Mr Amos had put his derelict property up for sale in May describing it as a 'renovator's dream' in his listing – with the block directly across the road from the historic Eagle Farm Racecourse, just 50m away from its entrance as well as Racecourse Road where shops like Maggi T and a multitude of restaurants, supermarkets and professional offices are located. He had listed it as having 'council approval already granted to demolish or remove the existing dwelling'. Records show the property registered in Mr Amos' name, and given it is zoned for low density medium development – which translates to one to two townhouses or mixed use developments of up to three storeys – he stands to make a fortune off the levelled site. Mr Amos – who did not comment when returning a call made to him earlier – has been in trouble with authorities previously including claims he made tenants responsible for repairs to rented property with several homes left to crumble. Aussie activists ‘psychologically brutalised' by Israeli soldiers
A pair of Aussie activists have touched down in Sydney after they spent several weeks in Israeli Defence Forces custody after a failed mission to supply food and aid to the starving people of Gaza. Journalist and filmmaker Tan Safi and activist Robert Martin were part of a 21-strong crew that set sail aboard the 'Handala' as part of a humanitarian mission. Since Israel began military operations in Gaza in October 2023, 60,000 Palestinians have been killed in a campaign that prominent Israeli humanitarian organisations labelled as 'genocide' on Monday. While speaking to the media at Sydney Airport on Friday morning, the pair said they were 'psychologically brutalised' by their captors. 'We were in international waters at the time, and we were taken completely against our will and just brutalised psychologically in every way,' Safi said. 'We were on a hunger and water strike, but the only time they offered food was once and it was a tomato about (the size of a golf ball),' she said. In a video published on Sunday, Safi said she had been 'abducted' by the Israeli military, and urged supporters to 'put pressure on the Australian government to sanction Israel'. The Freedom Flotilla departed from Syracuse, Italy, on July 13, fully equipped with humanitarian supplies, en route to Gaza. Free Gaza Australia, the Australian branch of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) that organised the expedition, said the cargo of the Handala 'carried desperately needed lifesaving humanitarian cargo, including baby formula, food, and medical supplies, to the Palestinian people in Gaza'. At about midnight on July 26, the Handala was intercepted by the Israeli military about 80km miles off the coast of Gaza – an area that is considered to be international waters. Footage shows the moment Israeli troops boarded the flotilla, brandishing assault weapons and pointing them in the direction of flotilla activists who sat in the middle of their ship with hands outstretched. The crew had agreed before their arrest they would engage in a hunger strike in solidarity with Palestinians. Every crew member has now been deported to their country of residence or are in the process of repatriation. In a social media post on Friday morning, Free Gaza Australia said plans were already under way for another expedition to Palestine. 'Robert and Tan are home and we're already preparing the next Freedom Flotilla boat to break the siege of Gaza. We sail until Palestine is free,' it said. Allegations have also surfaced of other Freedom Flotilla crew members being abused by IDF soldiers. The FFC said US crew member Chris Smalls was beaten, kicked and choked by at least seven IDF soldiers as he and the other crew members were being detained in the only physical display of brutality catalogued by members of the Flotilla. Among the activists was Greta Thunberg, who has since been sent back to Sweden by Israeli authorities. Originally published as Aussie activists 'psychologically brutalised' by Israeli soldiers
