LIST: 17 candidates in the running for the next chief of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department
The City of Jacksonville currently has 17 candidates it is considering to be the next fire chief of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.
Action News Jax told you last month when the city confirmed that current Chief Keith Powers would be stepping down.
His last day is June 30, and the city wants to have a new chief in place by July 1.
Here is the list of candidates being considered for the role:

Todd Smith
Phil Perry with the City of Jacksonville said that another 12 were deemed ineligible, for a total of 29 applicants.
'The 17 candidates currently being considered meet the basic criteria, including the requirement that they are currently serving at JFRD,' Perry said in an email to Action News Jax.

'We believe that out of nearly 2,000 firefighters, there are qualified candidates to be considered,' Perry continued.
The 17 candidates will now go through a more detailed evaluation process.

Fla. Senate restores advanced class funding
For months, Kaden Young has been calling on leaders in Jacksonville and statewide to save the courses he says, made him into the person he is today. 'I know I wouldn't be the same person,' said Young. 'I wouldn't be standing here today doing this interview.' Many local school districts, were worried about a proposal to cut school bonus funding by 50 percent for students that pass accelerated courses like AP, IB and AICE. But Tuesday, the Florida Senate's latest proposal got rid of that, fully restoring the funding. 'It's like jubilant almost,' said Young. 'We're simply putting that money into a categorical that way we can just account for it more. But the same amount of money will be there,' said Senate K-12 Appropriations Chair Danny Burgess (R-Zephyrhills). 'We know just how important it is for those courses, those classes and those students,' said Duval County School Board Member Darryl Willie. Willie says happy with the senate's proposal, but says there is still work left to do with the house still needing to agree with it. 'We're going to continue to have these conversations and relationships with our folks up in Tallahassee to make sure that they understand how it will affect us,' said Willie. And as lawmakers prepare to debate, Kaden wants them to remember- this funding can change lives. 'These are lifelines,' said Young. 'They're not luxuries, they're necessities.' FIRST ALERT WEATHER: Scattered showers redeveloping through the day
This morning, we are tracking scattered showers pushing north. Wet roads for the AM commute. A few heavy downpours are possible throughout the day. Embedded storm is likely at times. Highs today will be in the lower to mid 80s. Showers will continue this evening. Tomorrow will bring on-and-off rain with an embedded storm. Coverage of the showers and storms will turn more isolated by Friday as highs rebound to the lower 90s. Rainfall totals will likely be 1-2″+ closer to the coast and 1+ inches well inland through Thursday. TROPICS: An area of weak low pressure will develop in the next couple days northeast of Jacksonville & near the coast of the Carolina's. While this area has been highlighted in yellow by the NHC for a low risk of development, there will be few if any direct impacts to Jax/NE Fl./SE Ga. Tropical moisture will bring showers & storms to the local area Wed. & Thu. with or without any low pressure actually developing. Keeping an eye on the Western Caribbean & Southern Gulf for possible longer range tropical development – not likely until at least sometime next week or even later, if at all.
